Democracy Gets
Start in Family
Says Mrs. Maris
With the international situation
one to cause great anxiety, parents
here in Oregon, even though appar
ently far removed from danger, are
taking stock of the meaning of dem
ocracy in their own families, says
Mrs. Buena Maris, extension spe
cialist in family relationships, who
has been taking part in parents'
meetings and study club groups
throughout the state.
Among questions being discussed
in such gatherings are these. Is
the democratic way of living some
thing to be learned as a real achieve
ment instead of something children
will use spontaneously after they
leave an autocratic family rule? Is
have in a democracy? If so, do par
ents need to teach children to carry
responsibility as a privilege?
. Mothers in these study groups are
taking stock of their own families to
see whether each member has a
right to responsibilities and a voice
in the planning of family activities,
says Mrs. Maris. Some are finding
that they have an autocratic family,
in which one or both parents take
all the responsibility, make all the
decisions and lay down the rules and
enforce obedience.
Parents who want their families
to operate on the democratic basis
"of the family, by the family, and
for the family" need to find some
way in which all members of the
family can participate in planning
work, fun, and privileges, and can
ahare responsibility for carrying
out such plans, Mrs. Maris said.
One method parents find for
achieving this participation is by
means of the family council way
of talking things over as a group.
This is helpful both when children
are young and eager to be a part of
the family and also when they are
adolescent and beginning to feel the
pull of many interests away from
the family.
Mrs. Maris finds that fathers are
just as concerned as the mothers in
the discussion of these questions.
Out of a group of 135 Oregon fath
ers who were asked if they would
like to participate in a "fathers only"
forum to study their youngsters, 87

Protection of civil "rights is a duty
of the state, in the opinion of Gov
ernor Sprague who feels that the
federal government should keep its
hands off this problem unless and
until two states have shown them
selves to be "flagrantly derelict in
their duty in this respect."

10-Year Results
With Irrigated
Pastures Issued
Results of 10 years of continuaus
experimentation with irrigated pas
tures in Oregon indicate that good
pasture usually furnishes cheaper
feed for the dairy cow than any
other farm crop. Such is the state
ment made in a new bulletin just
issued y the state college experi
ment station on "The Value of Irri
gated Pastures for Dairy Cattle."
"Greater use of pasture in the
farm management plan is resulting
in lower production costs and great
er net returns for many progressive
Oregon dairymen," according to the
authors of the bulletin, H. P. Ewalt
and I. R. Jones of the experiment
station staff. "Pasture is cheaper
than the other roughages such as
hay, silage, root crops or soiling
crops, because of the higher yield
and greater digestibility and because
there are no harvesting costs and
only comparatively low seeding and
management costs."
The bulletin gives the results of
grazing straight ladino clover pas
tures, as well as those where clover
and grass mixtures are used. It
also shows the results of fertiliza
tion of irrigated pastures; In general,
ladino clover and grass mixtures
yielded more than either grass or
clover alone. The four-year annual
average yield per acre on 14.5 acres
of mixed ladino and grass pasture
was equivalent to 4.8 tons of alfalfa
hay or 226 bushels of oats.
The tests show that most profit
able yields can be1 obtained if fertil
izer is used. Where such large yields
are taken off, it is only to be ex
pected that fertility must be return
ed, the authors say. The yield on
areas fertilized with 300 pounds of
16 per cent superphosphate per acre
was 75 per cent greater than on
areas not fertilized.
On experimental plots cows ob
tained 65 per cent of their nutrient
requirement from the pasture and
grazed 189 days per year. The area
carried 1.4 cows per acre daily
during that period, and these pro
, duced an average of about 40 pounds
of four per cent milk per day.
