Men Slay Their Elk
By HARD MAN HIGH SCHOOL
Of the hunting party who went
out a good many times last week,
consisting of Owen Leathers, Dr. A.
D. McMurdo, F. B. Nickerson, W. A.
Neilson, Fan Miller and Neal Knigh
ten, three got elk. ,Mr. Nickerson
and Mr. Neilson were the first to
get their elk, then on Saturday
morning Dr. McMurdo was the for
tunate one. Carl McDaniel, who
hunted with them part of the time,
also got his elk on Saturday. The
unlucky ones plan to keep on hunt
ing. A charivari for Mr. and Mrs.
Marvin Hughes was enjoyed by a
large number of friends on Wed
nesday night. Candy and cigars
were passed and the evening was
spent in dancing.
Mrs. Marvin Brannon is chairman
of the Red Cross in charge of mem
bership and contributions for Hard
man and vicinity.
Miss Anne Carter who is the field
representative of the Red Cross vis
ited at the high school Thursday.
Mr. and Mrs. William Lee moved
to town Monday to the house for
merly occupied by the B. H. Bleak
man family. The Lee's moved from
the French ranch in the mountains
to send their two sons to school.
Mrs. Joe Batty, Lewis Batty, Joe
Batty and Henry Knighten returned
from Portland on Wednesday of last
week. Juanita Byers and Clara May
Jenson will return later.
On Saturday, November 18, sev
eral one-act plays will be presented
by the high school in the auditor
ium. The list of characters for "Mrs.
O'Leary's Cow" is Mrs. O'Leary,
Jeanette Leathers; Betsy O'Leary,
Mildred Clary; Emmet O'Leary, Irl
Clary; Mrs. Donahue, Frances In
skeep; Eileen Noolan, Vera McDan

A Halloween party was held at
the home of Mr. and Mrs. Marvin
Brannon on Tuesday evening. Ev
eryone had a good time.
Mr. and Mrs. Dick Steers and Gus
and Elmer, and Mrs. Foster Collins
went to Klamath Falls on Tuesday
last week to see Mr. Steers' and Mrs.
Collins' brother who is ill. They
returned Saturday.
Those attending th? funeral of
J. O. Kincaid in lone on Monday
afternoon were Mr. and Mrs. E. J.
Merrill, Stanley Robinson, A. D.
Inskeep, Oscel Inskeep and Miss
Frances Inskeep.
Glen Farrens who has not been
well for the last six years has been
unusually ill for several days.
Those attending the Christian En
deavor rally in Pendleton from here
on Friday night were Mr. and Mrs.
Neal Knighten and children, Mrs.
Marvin Brannon, Misses Frances In
skeep, Pat Bleakman, Edna Steph
ens, and also Joe Stephens. The
Columbia Union Christian Endeav
or convention will be at Pendleton,
Nov. 17-18-19.
Don't forget the Sunday school
rally, November 12. The program
follows: Regular Sunday school at
10:30 a. m.; potluck dinner at 12 in
Fan Miller hall. Bring your own
dishes. Special program at 2 p. m.
Regular church service at 4 p. m.
Christian Endeavor at 6:30. The
speaker for the day will be Rev. R.
C Young of Heppner., Everyone is
invited.
Delbert Robinson and Lewis Mc
Donald made a business trip to
Heppner on Saturday.
The weather of last week was sun
ny but chilly, turning colder during
the nights, and freezing the ground.

The Court appoints Lee Beckner,
Garnet Barratt, Roy Campbell, Ber
nard Doherty, Joseph N. Batty, to
act on the Budget Committee for
the purpose of drawing up the 1940
budget for Morrow County. The
Budget meeting is called for October
23, 1939, at 9 A. M.
