J. G. Barratt and John Crawford
returned Saturday from Montana
where Mr. Barratt had been looking
after sheep interests and John had
gone as helper. Billy Barratt, who
went to Montana at the same time
John did, had left for St. Paul with
a shipment of lambs for market
John made one trip there with a
sheep shipment while away.
Mr. and Mrs. Guy Boyer, son Don
and daughter, Miss Jane, an attend
ant to Queen Barbara of Pendleton
Round-Up, were Rodeo visitors from
their home at John Day. They were
busy greeting many old-time friends
and extending invitations to the
Grant county fair, Sept 22-23-24.
Mr. Boyer runs the furniture fctore
at John Day.
Mrs. Gordon Ridings arrived from
Eugene the end of the week in time
to take in the Rodeo of which she
was the first queen. Mr. Ridings was
prevented from accompanying her by
work on the farm of his parents, but
will join Mrs. Ridings here before
they return to New York to resume
their teaching duties in the me
tropolis. Mr. and Mrs. Jack Byron of Los
Angeles were over-Rodeo visitors
in the city. Leaving on the return
the first of the week, they were ac
companied by Mrs. Byron's mother,
Mrs. Katie Slocum, who expected
to make an extended visit with the
Byrons and other relatives.
Among former Hepnerites from
the Pendleton district making the
annual trek to Rodeo were John
Kilkenny, with family, Bert Stone,
and the Walter Moores. Larry Moore
was one of the main performers in
the Pendleton Sons of the Legion
drum and bugle corps.
Mr. and Mrs. A. W. Dkystra of
Crabtree and son-in-law and daugh
ter, Mr. and Mrs. Ralph Bierly of
Harrisburg, visited friends and rel
atives from Thursday til Tuesday.
The Dykstras are former residents,
having farmed for many years on
Rhea creek.
Billy McRoberts, in CCC camp at
Baker, came back to the old home
town for Rodeo. A member of the
town baseball team before leaving,
he has extended his diamond career
by playing shortstop for Weiser this
season with a batting average of .384.
Mr. and Mrs. O. Hilding Bengston
of Medford are the parents of a IVi
pound daughter, born last Thursday
morning, according to word received
by Mrs. Bengston's parents, Mr. and
Mrs. Ralph Benge. Mrs. Bengston
was formerly Miss Luola Benge.
John Farley made the old home
town a call during Rodeo, bringing
along a gang of live wires from John
Day town who were talking up the
Grant county fair. Jack Parnsh
Bill Ford and "Mac" McCann were
in Johnny's gang.
Neale Welch of Portland and Carl
Welch of The Dalles visited over the
week end with their mother, Mrs. E.
J. Stingle. They are sons of Otis
Welch, member of the pioneer mer
cantile firm of Rhea & Welch.
L. C. Mathews and wife of Pilot
Rock left last Sunday for an ex
tended trip to California and the big
fair. Thev were here for Rodeo and
.
had as supper guests Bill Etter and
Jim Whittaker of Pilot Rock.
Hueh Bowman, in charge of the
Pendleton Sons of the Legion drum
and buele corps, was an interested
Rodeo attendant and Round-Up
booster among those from the neigh
boring city Saturday.
Mr. and Mrs. Joe Snyder departed
Sundav for Seaside to visit with rel
atives and enjoy the cool ocean
breezes while Mr. Snyder takes res
pite from his work at the Noble sad
dle shop.
Charley Hoskins, Indian reserva
tion officer, brother of Fred Hos
kins of Rhea creek and old-time
baseball catcher, was among the
Pendletonians here for Rodeo Saturday.
Dr. Leonard Purkey, former os
teopath here, was a Rodeo visitor
from Portland, acompanied by his
daughter, Marlene, and Miss Gale
Gibson. Mrs. Charles Corder came
with them from the city to take in
the Rodeo and visit at the home of
her mother, Mrs. Lillie Aiken.
Mrs. F. S. Parker and daughter,
Miss Katherine, went to Portland
the middle of last week for a visit
at the home of her son and daughter-in-law,
Mr. and Mrs. John Par
ker, while Mrs. Parker was seeking
respite from a severe attack of hay
fever. They returned Sunday.
Mrs. Willam Matlock and two
daughters of Cheney, Wash., are
visiting friends here, having spent
an afternoon with Mrs. Bonnie Cach
ran. Mrs. Matlock's late husband
formerly owned the Minor ranch on
Willow creek.
Mrs. Eddie Thorpe and children,
Carl and Etta Mae, returned from
Portland Sunday. Carl went through
a clinic and took treatment at Doem-
becher hospital. He will return in
three or four weeks for further
treatment.
Mrs. Dessa Hofstetter and daugh
ter, Miss Othelia, arrived in the city
last Thursday for a visit at the home
of Mrs. Hofstetter's parents, Mr. and
Mrs. M. J. Devin. Mrs. Hofstetter is
Malheur county librarian at On
tario. Gerald Roberts who atte'nded high
school here two years ago and play
ed football, took in the Rodeo, rid
ing his motor-bike down from Se
attle. He recently arrived in the
states from his home in Alaska.
M. A. Fuegy, traveling freight
agent for Union Pacific, was in the
city at Rodeo time from his home
in Portland and was an interested
spectator at the big show.
Dr. Will Hughes, Mr. Witt and
Mrs. McCann were a group of Walla
Wallans passing through town Sun
day on their way home from a visit
at Ritter. Dr. Hughes is a brother
of Percy Hughes of Lena.
Alfred L. Ayers of Portland is
making an- extended visit at the
home of his niece, Mrs. Percy
Hughes, at Lena. He accompanied
her to town yesterday and was greet
ing old-time friends.
F. M. Simpson and son, F. M., Jr.,
of Chicago were Thursday rodeo
guests of Mr. and Mrs. Ralph I.
Thompson. Mr. Simpson is head of
the agricultural research department
of Swift & Co.
A. W. Zornes, logging contractor
for Bridal Veil Lumber and Box
company, was a business visitor in
the city yesterday from the opera
tions on upper Johnson creek.
Mr. and Mrs. Felix Johnson of
Range were in the city for the
three days of Rodeo.

Miss Marguerite Glavey who fin
ished teaching a summer term of
school at Burton Valley the first of
August, will teach the Liberty school
in the Eight Mile section, beginning
next week.
Mr. and Mrs. Billy Schwarz from
Seneca arrived Friday in time to
take in Rodeo events while visiting
at the home of Mr. Schwarz's par
ents, Mr. and Mrs. Henry Schwarz.
Richard Peterson of Monument
brought a load of cattle over from
Grant county just in time to get in
on Saturday's Rodeo and was busy
greeting old-time friends here.
M. H. Mulligan of Oregon City,
representing the department of in
ternal revenue, was a Rodeo visitor,
being a guest at the home of his
brother, Miles Mulligan.
Mr. and Mrs. J. W. Shipley of Un
derwood, Wash., and Mrs. Elwin
Shipley of Wenatchee visited rel
atives and friends here Saturday
and took in the Rodeo.
Harry Duncan returned home
Sunday from a two weeks' outing
at Seal Rocks on the coast, spent
with Judge C. L. Sweek and family.
Dr. J. P. Stewart, Eye-Sight Spec
ialist of Pendleton, will be at the
HEPPNER HOTEL on WEDNES
DAY, September 6th.
Bob Fortner of Grass Valley was
an over-Rodeo guest at the home
of his parents-in-law, Mr. and Mrs.
Fred Lucas.

Lennie Lowden of Condon, sister
of Mrs. R. A. Thompson, rode in
Saturday's Rodeo parade wearing
a brand new pair of chaps turned
out at Noble's.
Mr. and Mrs. Jack French were
here for the Rodeo' from the Long
Creek ranch, and Jack as usual as
ssted at the grounds.
Mrs. Mary Burt and daughter of
Portland visited in the county over
the week end and took in the Rodeo.
Chet Macey was admitted to a local
hospital Sunday evening suffering
a light stroke complicated by uremia.
Mr. and Mrs. D. A. Wilson motored
to Portland Tuesday.
