Mrs. E. P. Hoyt arrived in the city
Friday night from Portland and
joined by Mrs. J. G. Barratt, son
Bill and John Crawford left Saturday
morning for a visit in Montana. The
party also included James Barratt
who was dropped off at Pendleton
for a visit with his grandmother,
Mrs. Frank Lieuallen. Bill Barratt
and John Crawford expected to in
sist in taking some of the Barratt
lambs from the Montana range to
market at St. Paul, Minn.
Uncle Billy Brown has reutrned to
the home of his daughter, Mrs. R. A.
Thompson after visiting four months
with son, Scott Brown, and daugh
ter, Mrs. Linnie Lowder, at Condon.
While away he enjoyed a visit with
relatives and friends at Tacoma, Se
attle, Yakima and , Lonerock. Scott
Brown came over with him Satur
day. Dr. A. D. McMurdo attended ses
sions of the Eastern Oregon Medical
association held at Baker the end of
the week. He was accompanied home
by Dr. John Cheetham of Portland
who was taken on to the city by
Bernard McMurdo. Bernard expect
ed to visit for a few days in Cor
vallis before returning.
Edwin Ingles, former school prin
cipal at Lexington, was a visitor in
the city Tuesday in his capacity as
pulic relations man for Pacific uni
versity during the summer. He com
plimented the record of Morrow
county students at the institution,
all of whom have made good rec
ords. Bernard McMurdo arrived home
this week to spend the remainder of
the summer vacation with his par
ents, Dr. and Mrs. A. D. McMurdo.
He has been attending ROTC camp
at Vancouver, Wash., following the
close of spring term at Oregon State
college where he is a student.
Mrs. Clara Beamer and daughter,
Miss Irene, and Mrs. Joe Hughes re
turned home last Thursday evening
from points in California. Mrs. Bea
mer and daughter took in the San
Francisco fair while Mrs. Hughes
visited relatives in Sacramento. They
were gone for two weeks.
Mrs. H. L. Stiles returned to her
home at Portland this week after a
visit with her mother, Mrs. Josie
Jones. News was received this week
of the andvancement of her husband
from the position of assistant cashier
to cashier of United States National
bank in Portland.
Mr. and Mrs. Joseph Belanger were
in the city yesterday from their
home at Moro, Mrs. Belanger visit
ing friends while Mr. Belanger look
ed after business in connection with
his work as cooperative research
agent with USDA extension service.
David, Will and Annie Hynd re
turned home Tuesday from a va
cation trip to Portland and the
coast. They were in Portland while
Fleet week was in progress and
had the privilege of going aboard
one of Uncle Sam's greyhounds.
Mrs. Chester Brown was in the
city Saturday from Monument,
transacting business in connection
with moving the family home there
wfcere Mr. Brown and her son,
Chester Christenson, are employed
with the new CCC camp.
When W. H. French was hi town
Tuesday from Blue Mountain farm
he reported the temperature at 31
degrees at his place that morning,
a big contrast from the temperature
of last week when the thermometer
registered over 100.
Mr. and Mrs. Ed Walker and son
and Bill Isom motored to Walla
Walla Tuesday evening to attend a
district dinner for Ford parts and
service men held at the Marcus
Whitman hotel. They report an en
joyable occasion.

George Peck, county commission
er, completed his harvest in time
to attend the regular court session
yesterday. While his yield was
somewhat short of normal, it ex
ceeded earlier expectations, he said.
Dr. R. M. Rice left by auto Satur
day for Oakland, Cal., where he ex
pected to pick up his mother, Mrs.
R. M. Rice, and sister, Miss Betty
Rice, and return with them to their
home at Eugene.
F. J. Ely was in the city today
from the farm near Morgan. He
reported harvesting about over in
his district with yields generally
better than expected earlier in the
season.
Mrs. Wislon Bayless left this week
with her son, Howard Swick, and
family of Monument, for a two weeks
motor trip on which they expected
to attend the fair at San Francisco.
Womens Foreign Missionary so
ciety of the Methodist church will
meet in the church basement at 2:30
Tuesday afternoon, Aug. 8. This will
be the day for mite box offerings.
Ed Gonty and son Thomas left re
cently for Los Angeles where Mr.
Gonty expected to visit for three
months and his son intended to en
ter aviation school.
The Bud Hanlon family plans io
leave the first of the week for Ida
ho for a vacation trip while Mr.
Hanlon is relieved of his duties as
P. P. & L. lineman.
Mr. and Mrs. George Howard and
children and Mrs. Howard's mother,
Mrs. Armstrong, left the first of the
week for a short vacation motor trip
into Washington.
Frank Rumble departed on last
evening's train for Missoula, Mont.,
to be absent for two weeks. He ex
pected to visit other points also
while away.
George McDuffee arrived this
week from Portland and is visiting
at the home of his son-in-law and
daughter, Mr. and Mrs. Harold
Buhman.
John O'Dell, district manager of

Mr. Chambers, company auditor,
were business visitors in the city
Tuesday.
Dr. J. P. Stewart, Eye-Sight Spec
ialist of Pendleton, will be at the

son Dick returned home this week
from a vacation trip to Long Beach,

week. Rev. and Mrs. Alquist of Vale
will arrive Tuesday, accompanied
by a trio of musicians and will as
sist with the music.
Mr. and Mrs. Calvin Allen of Uma
tilla spent Sunday with Mrs. Allen's
parents, Mr. and Mrs. Haney.
Mr. and Mrs. James Arnberg were
La Grande visitors Sunday.
Mr. and Mrs. Batie Rand were the
lucky winners of the Frigidaire at
the theater in Hermiston Wednes
day night of last week.
Mr. Larson was a business visitor
in Hermiston Monday.
Chase McCoy of California visited
relatives here last week.

Mr. and Mrs. Lyle Seaman from
Sandy visited Mrs. Seaman's par
ents, Mr. and Mrs. Chas. Steward,
Sunday, being enroute to Madras
to visit Mr. Seaman's parents.
Mrs. Marshal Markham and two
daughters, Adelpha and Lavelle,
returned home Sunday from Turner.
Mr. Markham spent the week end
with his family.
Rev. and Mrs. Harness and fam
ily returned Friday. They were driv
ing a new car which they purchased
while on their trip to camp meeting.

SIX LICENSES FOR YEAR
Mistaken report was given in these
columns last week that only three
marriage licenses had been issued in
the county so far this year. Clerk
Barlow reports there have been six.
Recipients of the latest, Charles
Johnson, son of Mr. and Mrs. Hiram
Johnson, and Miss Ola Hiatt, daugh
ter of Mr. and Mrs. Levi Hiatt, were
married July 20 by Rev. Martin B.
Clark in this city.
