Mr. and Mrs. B. C. Pinckney and
son returned Sunday from a trip
which took them to Nebraska, Mr.
Pinckney's' former home. Condi
tions were somewhat better in the
middle west than he expected to
find them, Pinckney stated. There
has been more rainfall in Nebraska
the past spring than in recent years
and crops were fairly good. They
found conditions in western Mon
tana somewhat improved also, due
to increased rainfall. It was Mr.
Pinckney's first visit to Nebraska
in 11 years.
Mr. and Mrs. Louis Marquardt
and stepson and grandchildren mo
tored to Boise last week, visiting
with their youngest doughter, Mrs.
Jean Clark, and family. Returning
home Saturday they were accom
panied by Mrs. Clark's children, and
' were joined here by Celethia Jordan,
George Lambirth and Harry Mar
quardt, making quite a family re
union. Mrs. Lillian Gray McCormick, en
voy of the Salvation Army, Port
land district, was a caller in Heppner
Monday. Mrs. McCormick reported
a cordial reception by local people
in her canvass for funds and be
lieves business conditions must be
"better, if her reception this year as
compared with recent years is to
be taken as a criterion.
Mr. and Mrs. Herbert Zahl of
Portland passed through Heppner
Sunday on their way home from
Flint, Mich., after driving a new
car from the factory. Mrs. Zahl was
formerly Miss Thelma Selling and
in 1919 was a member of the Hepp
ner grade school teaching staff.
Mr. and Mrs. E. Harvey Miller and
Mr. and Mrs. Loyal R. Parker left
this morning for Klamath Falls
where they will attend the annual
convention of the State Elks asso
ciation this week end. Mr. Miller is
exalted ruler and Mr. Parker sec
retary of Heppner lodge 358.
Mr. and Mrs. E. R. Huston. were
visitors at the Blackburn mill on
Rhea creek Sunday afternoon.
Visitors in Heppner this morning
were J. C. Schleppegrell and son, J.
C. Jr., of Los Angeles. The senior
Schleppegrell is a newspaperman of
many years standing and couldn't
resist the temptation to browse
around the GT office and inhale
some printer's ink. The visitors were
enroute to Montana, their former
home.
Good fishing is reported from the
lower Twelve Mile district, states
District Ranger F. F. Wehmeyer.
Many fine catches have been report
ed recently. It is expected that the
state game commission will plant
fish in Skookum, Alder, Wall and
Johnson creeks in the Heppner for
est area.
Collins Faces First
Degree Murder Count
Lee Collins, alleged slayer of State
Policeman Willard Tubbs, will face
a first degree murder charge in
the Gilliam county circuit court,
according to a statement made by
District Attorney D. R. Parker.
Collins is in a hospital at The
Dalles where he is reported to be
on the road to recovery from a
bullet wound inflicted by Marshal
Webb Turner of Arlington.
Funeral services for the slain of
ficer were held at Arlington Friday
and the body was shipped to Port
land for cremation. Several Hepp
ner people attended the services
at Arlington.
GEORGE CASS
Funeral services for George Cass,
76, who died at the Bucknum room
ing house Wednesday. June 28, will
be held at 2 o'clock this afternoon
from the chapel of Phelps Funeral
home. Cass had been a resident of
the county for many years, herding
sheep and doing other ranch work
in the country before coming to
Heppner to reside. He was a native
of New York.

In 35 Years
In the states on a business and
pleasure trip, Bruce Haines paid
Heppner a visit the past week end.
He has made his home in Valdez,
Alaska, for a number of years and
his visit here was cut short as he
had to be in Seattle early this week
to catch his boat for the return
journey.
When the present century was
young, Haines engaged in the fur
ture business in Heppner. He sold
out about 1904 and left this section.
His visit here was primarily to see
Mrs. Frank Anderson, his sister-in-law,
and while here sought out some
of his acquaintances of other days.
He is a brother of Beach Haines,
former Heppner and lone hotel
operator.
Fire Dispatcher
Wed at Pullman
The marriage of George P. Clasky,
dispatcher at the Tupper ranger
station, and Miss Mildred Ensley
was an event of Saturday evening
at Pullman, Wash. The couple re
turned to Tupper and were given
a reception Tuesday evening at
which some 40 were present. They
were presented with a set of silver
ware by fellow employees in the for
est service.
