Miss Kathryn Parker accompan
ied Fred Hoskins to La Grande last
Thursday, visiting relatives and
friends while Mr. Hoskins attended
to business in connection with his
sheep on summer range in that vi
cinity. On the return they were ac
companied by Vemon Knowles,
who came here for summer vacation
from his studies at Eastern Oregon
College of Education.
Mrs. Dessa Hofstetter and daugh
ter, Miss Otillia, visited with rela
tives and friends here over the week
end on their way to Ontario where
Mrs. Hofstetter is Malheur county
librarian. They drove from Eugene
where Mrs. Hofstetter met her
daughter at the close of the univer
sity year, Miss Hofstetter having
been a freshman at the university
this year.
Norton King, Heppner student at
Oregon State' college, expected to
leave Corvallis Tuesday with the
college band for an apperance at
the Golden Gate International expo
sition at San Francisco. From there
he expected to go on to Hollywood
for a visit with his brother, Mart,
before returning to Heppner.
Mr. and Mrs. John Keys and
family left the first of the week for
Missouri for a month's visit at the
home of Mr. Key's mother, who was
reported to be in ill health. Mr.
Keys, local barber, said it had been
20 years since he had visited the
old home.
Mr. and Mrs. Walter Rood were
visiting in the city Monday from
their farm below lone. They report
ed that Tom Perry from Lone Rock
visited their home on Saturday and
was accompanied home by the Rood
children, Betty and Charlene, for a
visit.
, Creston R. Maddock, Portland in
surance man and former resident of
this city, was visiting old-time
friends while in the city yesterday
on business. He announced the ar
rival of a new son about a month
ago who has been named William.
Mr. and Mrs. Herb Sauter of
Burns visited over the week end
with friends here. Mr. Sauter, for
mer state patrolman, arrived just
in time to congratulate his friend,
"Bill" Francis, upon the arrival of
the latter's new daughter.
Miss Louise Anderson, Oregon
State student, arrived home last
week end for summer vacation, be
ing brought from Corvallis by her
mother, Mrs. Hilma Anderson, and
brother Frank, who drove down for
her.

Mrs. Thurman Curry and daugh
ter, Miss Carmen, visited last week
at the home of Mrs. Curry's bro
ther, J. F. Lucas, coming from Port
land where Mr. Curry manages the
Groundgripper shoe store.
Mr. and Mrs. Worth Montgomery
of Ogden, Utah, were visitors in
the city the first of the week while
Mr. Montgomery was contacting lo
cal shepmen with prospect of pur
chasing lambs.
Born to Mr. and Mrs. W. E. Fran
cis in this city last Thursday, a 10
pound daughter. Mr. Francis is state
highway patrolman in charge of
game law enforcement for this dis
trict. Mrs. R. C. Lawrence and two
daughters are visiting in California
with relatives, having left the end
of the week with Gene Normoyle
who motored to San Francisco.
Lee Sprinkel enjoyed a few days
of vacation last week from his work
as barber in the Keys shop, taking
advantage of the opportunity to
catch up on his fishing.
Womens Foreign Missionary so
ciety of the Methodist church will
hold its regular meeting Tuesday
afternoon, June 13, at 2:30, in the
basement of the church.
Guests at the home of Mr. and
Mrs. Chas. B. Cox last week were
Mrs. Cox's brothers, T. C. Bur
roughs of Boise, Ida., and Bert Bur
roughs of Portland.
Paul McCarty and Don Turner,
students at University of Oregon
the last year, arrived home the first
of the week for summer vacation.
John Howell, who recently sold
his place at Top, is located on the
farm of Mrs. Rebecca Apostolus on
Rhea creek which he has rented.
Miss Harriet Hager arrived home
the end of the week from Corvallis
where she was a student at Oregon
State college for the last year.
Margaret Constant, beauty oper
ator at Arlington, was a week end
guest at the home of Mrs. Lois
Turner, local beauty operator.

the late B. F. DeVore at Hardman
Monday afternoon were Mr. and
Mrs. A. Z. Barnard, son-in-law and
daughter Mrs. James R. Snipes, and

and Mrs. Jack DeVore and daugh
ters, Miss Loye DeVore and Mrs.
Edwin P. Hoyt of Portland.
Mr. and Mrs. F. W. Turner and
Mr. and Mrs. Percy Hughes left
Monday in the Turner car for a
visit to the Golden Gate Interna
tional exposition at San Francisco.
They expected to be gone 10 days.
Mr. and Mrs. Alva Jones returned
Saturday from a week's visit to
Portland, accompanied by Joan
Crawford, - daughter 'of Mr. and
Mrs. W. V. Crawford, who is visiting
for a few weeks with relatives.
Miss Evelyn Bartholomew was in
the city Monday from Arlington,
visiting her father, Nelson Barthol
omew, clerk at Hotel Heppner.

ing from his home at Weston.

home for summer vacation from his

Mrs. Florence Dalzell of Dry
Fork, in town Monday, reported
pleasure with recent work done on
the county road leading to her
place. Grading and fills have im
proved the road greatly, she said.
She also reported the new grade
into Rock creek on the Heppner
Condon road about completed and
expected surfacing would start in
the near future.
J. G. Barratt returned Monday
night from a two weeks visit to his
summer sheep operations at Brown
ing, Mont. Barney Devlin is herding
for Mr. Barratt there this summer.
Weather had been too cold to
shear, but Mr. Barratt expected
this operation would be over in
two or three weeks.
