Thursday, May 4, 1939 Heppner Gazette Times, Heppner, Oregon Page Five TEAM SELECTION ANNOUNCED FOR ANNUAL CROW-MAGPIE INVASION One hundred and fifty sportsmen and women are lined up for the start-off gun, now sounding, for Morrow County Hunters and Ang lers club crow-magpie contest. With Ralph Beamer and George Howard as captains of two teams, they will make the hills and ravines resound with sounds of the hunt until June 12, when trophies will be counted and all will dine in the interests of fewer predators and more game birds. , Each egg or young bird taken will count five points, each pair of adult legs, 10 points. Crows, magpies and small hawks will count in the scor ing. Each of the captains says, "Come on, gang," and here are the gangs: BEAMER L. E. While he had just finished plowing and turning under the thistles, rain would make a job of weeding for him, but he didn't care so long as it rains. Mr. and Mrs. T. Babb and Mrs. Claud Graham and daughter Jeanne returned home Tuesday from Port land, where Mr. and Mrs. Babb went last week end on business, and where Mrs. Graham and daughter had visited at the home of Mrs. Ida Dutton. J. G. Barratt was prevented from accompanying his sheep to Mon tana last week end by an attack of flu. He was able to be about the first of the week though feeling pretty weak from effects of the illness. Mrs. Roy Quackenbush sustained a painful injury yesterday morning when she dislocated a knee in a fall down the rear steps while hanging out clothes at her home on South Gilmore street. Mr. and Mrs. Henry Zepp of Se attle were expected to arrive today for a visit at the home of Mr. and Mrs. J. F. Lucas. Mrs. Zepp, for merly Miss Elza Love who resided at Heppner for several years, is a sister of Mrs. Lucas. Mrs. Edna Turner was in Port land the end of the week to see her daughter, Mrs. James Valentine, whom she reported progressing nice ly from a major operation undergone last week at a hospital there. D. N. Mackay, Gilliam county dis trict attorney, was in the city a short time Monday, calling at the court house on the way to Pendleton from Condon. He was accompanied by "Doc" Rice of Condon. Miss Alma Van Winkle has re turned to her work as stenographer at the county agent's office after a month's leave while taking special work at a commercial school in Portland. A CCC youth who fainted at camp this week led to a rumor that he was dead. His physician reports the rumor erroneous and that the boy is now okeh. Mr. and Mrs. Frank Roberts are recent arrivals from Baker, expect ing to locate here while Mr. Rob erts is engaged in logging. Mrs. Rachel Stearns of Albany is visiting at the home of her mother, Mrs. Charlotte Scherzinger. Mr. and Mrs. John Anglin left Sunday for Seattle for a few days' visit with relatives. Patches of drifted snow dotted the landscape there, and a new snowstorm had struck just as they were leaving, they reported. Mr. Merrill enjoyed some fishing though luck was poor due to high water from the melting snow, he said.
