Thursday, March 9, 1939 HARDMAN NEWS Robinson Cattle Go to Spokane Show By HARDMAN HIGH SCHOOL Roy and Donald Robinson started for Spokane Monday morning with a truck load of young registered cattle which will be entered in the show and sale at the last of the week. Owen Leathers is running the ranch during Mr. Robinson's absence. Mr. and Mrs. Max Buschke were business visitors in Heppner Friday. The three one-act plays given on Saturday night were all put on suc cessfully and enjoyed by everybody. Financially, the evening was more successful than some expected. A good sum was taken in which will be used, for the church. The dance which followed was well attended and a delicious supper was served by the Rebekahs. Sufficient tickets were not sold on the table cloth which is being given to raise money for a piano for the church. The drawing of the numbers will take place as soon as possible. Mr. and Mrs. Carl Leathers went to Long Creek Wednesday to take Mrs. Archie Leathers and infant son home. Miss Grace Leathers re turned with them and remained here for a visit. Mrs. Basil Harrison and daugh ters, Masil and Vivian, of Redmond were among those in Hardman Sat urday evening. Mrs. Harrison is a half-sister of Roy Robinson. Lewis MacDonald who is living in Boardman and attending high school there is on the basketball team. Last Saturday they played in Fossil. Henry and Tommy Graham, Don ald and Creston Robinson and Mar vin Saddler attended the "Gunga Din" performance in Heppner Sun day. Among those coming from other places to see the plays and attend the dance were Mrs. Alex Warren of Condon, Miss Grace Leathers of Kimberley, Mr. and Mrs. Tress Mc Clintock of Dry Fork, Mrs. John McDonald, Mr. and Mrs. Marion Saling and three children of Board man, Mr. and Mrs. Sidney Zinter and Miss lone, Mr. and Mrs. Floyd Worden and children of Eightmile. Miss Alta Stevens who has been in Condon for several weeks return ed Saturday night in time for the festivities. Earlene, the small daughter of Mr. and Mrs. Earl Redding, has been ill for some time. Mrs. Redding was also ill. Miss Pat Bleakman returned on Sunday from the valley, where she has been visiting for several months. She left Swiss Home with Mr. and Mrs. Raymond Reid, but stopped in Hood River to visit friends. Mr. and Mrs. O. C. Gaither, Roy Kirby and Miss Betty Gaither came to Hard man with her. They visited at the home of Mr. and Mrs Earl Redding, returning to Hood River in the eve ning. Betty remained for a visit. Raymond McDonald is working in lambing for Ray Wright. Mrs. Neal Knighten was in Hepp ner Friday and Saturday selling tickets on a hand-crocheted table cloth which was on display at the Penney store. Ralph Craber who has been in the Veteran's hospital at Walla Walla for some time is improving. Mr. and Mrs. Bob Campbell (Ar leta Ashbaugh) and small son and Lester Ashbaugh of Portland are visiting at the Lewis Knighten home. Mr. and Mrs. Max Buschke and Carey Hastings went to Heppner Monday. Mr. and Mrs. Charlie McDaniel went to Arlington Sunday. Charlie attended the trappers' meeting be low there, while Mrs. McDaniel vis ited her daughter, Mrs. Bud Fisk. Zeppel Harrison and Bill Howell came over Monday to attend to business in Heppner. When they returned to Top, Mrs. Frank Howell who has been visiting here returned with them. Sam McDaniel, Jr., went to work for Harlan McCurdy on Rock creek. Mrs. Jim Hams and Mrs. Charlie McDaniel gave a bridal shower at Mrs. McDaniel's home Tuesday of last week in honor of Mrs. Vester Hams, who is a recent bride. It was an especially nice party and the bride received many lovely gifts. Mr. and Mrs. Raymond Reid re turned to Hardman Thursday. They Heppner have been living at Swiss Home for the past several months. They are going to live at the mill where Raymond. is going to get the ma chinery in shape to begin working in a few weeks. Mrs. Ted Burnside is still suf fering from the effects of a tooth extraction. Infection set in and she had to go to Portland for treatment. After her return home she was worse and last Thursday Mr. Burn side had to take her down again. The weather this week was very unsatisfactory, the main reason be ing the snow which fell almost ev ery night and was melted slightly during the day. The wind blew quite freely, especially at night, and the temperature was slightly below zero. OSC Has Staff Men In Science Who's Who Oregon State College That this institution is the "scientific center" of the state of Oregon is indicated by the fact that current "who's who" of the scientific world, "American Men of Science," includes biograph ical sketches of 83 members of the staff of Oregon State college, nearly four times as many as are listed for any other institution in the state. Other colleges and universities in Oregon are well represented, how ever, University of Oregon being second with 22, mostly in the social science fields. Reed college and the University of Oregon medical school rank high, while Willamette, Lin field, Pacific, University of Port land the Pacific college all contrib ute to the list of American scien tists.
