GAS HOUSE GOSSIP
By JOE AIKEN
This year any team going to the
district tournament will be allowed
nine players, which will allow four
substitutes to the team. This fact
will make it easier on the boys as
a whole, as they will not have to
play so hard or so steadily. This
ruling would also have been made
for the sub-district, but the com
mittee decided that it wasn't neces
sary as it would hardly affect most
of the teams. Heppner is the only
team seriously affected by the rul
ing that only eight members can
go to the sub-district, as most of
the smaller schools only have a few
substitutes.
The league competition has ended
with Heppner as the undisputed
victor. It is my opinion that the
league organized in the' manner it
was this year eventually will do
away with the sub-district tour
nament. This will eliminate much
of the expense of the teams entered
in the sub-district tournament. Too,
the elimination of the sub-district
tournament should promote more
interest in inter-school activities.
The teams having small courts
would find it necessary to schedule
ther games on a regulation court,
but one would find greater com
petition and more improved games.
The Student Council will decide
whether or not this school shall in
dulge in the grand old American
sport, namely, baseball Baseball
had a tendency to die out a few
years ago when there was not an
active team. Due to the period dur
ing which it was not a major sport,
it has been difficult to get the in
terest in it back. In the years that
we have had a team, little advertis
ing of games has been done, which
is also a factor contributing to lack
of interest. Too, many people have a
tendency to discredit baseball be
cause it is not generally considered
a major sport. In the past, the fi
nances of the baseball team have
been in the black, but this year it
seems that it will .be necessary to
buy uniforms. It will not be neces
sary that full uniforms be ordered,
as we still have the practice foot
ball jersies which were used last
year for baseball and are still in
good condition. The only necessities
are bats and balls and pants, which
will not involve much expense.
The spring sport which is becom
ing more popular all the time is
tennis. This year wiil see a reg
ularly organized schedule. Tennis
should be of some interest to the
townspeople and students, as it is a
comparatively new sport in this
school. Last year Heppner had its
first tennis team. In this school it
has been the rule to have only boys'
sports. Now with tennis becoming
a more popular sport, the girls
have a chance to participate in inter-school
sports. This year will see
many new students out for tennis
and many of the older members of
the team back. The men's ladder
will probably be topped by Hugh
Crawford; the women's by Frances
McCarty. Jack Vaughn, Don Ben
nett, Jack Merrill, Dubby Aiken,
and several newcomers will . all
make strong bids for positions on
the men's team. New afces on the
girls' team will probably be Caro
lyn Vaughn, Dorothy Howell, Helen
Egan, and several other newcomers.
In regard to the basketball game
held at Hermiston between Heppner
and Umatilla for the league cham
pionship, Heppner emerged victor
ious, 19 to 18, and is the proud po
sessor of two new trophies. One of
these trophies was given Heppner
for winning the western division of
the league championship and the
other for winning the game Tues
day, which made them champions of
the Upper Columbia league.
In the game itself, the scoring was
fairly even during the first quarter,
but Heppner pushed ahead to a
12-7 lead at the end of the first
half. In the second half Heppner ran
up a lead of eleven points. Then
the Umatilla lads seemed to find

their stride and began to sink bas
kets from all sides of the court.
It was 45 seconds to go with Uma
tilla one point behind Heppner and
the ball in Umatilla's territory.
Hiatt of Umatilla cast off from the
center of the floor with a long shot,
which came too close for reasonable
comfort, when the timer's whistle
sounded, but only those persons
close by heard it, as the din was
terrific. The final score again was
Heppner 19 and Umatilla 18.
