Girls' League Social Hour
The Girls' League, in the the way
of promoting better social hours,
plans to make a combination Val
entine party on social hour this
Friday. Refreshments will be avail
able during the entire party, and
several surprise methods will be
used to make those present take part
in the dancing.
If this , party is one half as suc
cessful as any of the other parties
sponsored by the Girls' League, it
is certain that all who come will
have a very enjoyable evening.

Who's Who
I know you didn't expect to meet
Lowell Ashbaugh, a sophomore
born in Hardman, Oregon, Nov. 4,
'21. His family moved to Vancouver,
Wash., when he was a year old.
When he was eight years old his
family again moved, this time to
Heppner.
Lowell is 5 feet 10 iches tall and
weighs 135 pounds. He is a member
of the Heppner band, and also . a
member of the Pep club. He has an
older sister and a younger brother.
He is a part time clerk at the Safe
way store in Heppner. Lowell's ex
pected vocation and ambition is to
be a banker.

GAS HOUSE GOSSIP

Well, dear readers, here is the
news you have been expecting. The
sub-district basketball tournament
is to be held at Fossil, March 3-4.
The schedule for Friday is as fol
lows: Lexington vs. Irrigon at 2:30
p. m.; Heppner vs. Boardman at
3:30 p. m.; Condon vs. lone, 7:00;
Fossil vs. Umatilla at 8:00. On Satur
day winners of first two games will
meet at 2:00 p. m.; at 3:00 p. m.
winners of third and fourth games;
at 7:00 p. m., losers of Saturday af
ternoon games; at 8:00 hampionship
game.
There will be a trophy given to the
champion, and the basketball will be
given the runner up. All star first
and second teams shall be chosen by
the coaches and referees and an
nounced Saturday evening just be
fore the last game.
There are few accommodations as
to quarters for the players; however,
three teams are staying in Condon
and the" rest are to stay in Fossil.
Condon will travel back and forth.
The teams' expenses at the sub
district tournament will not be paid
to participating schools whose stu
dents or townspeople damage hotels,
restaurants, and other property
while at Fossil or Condon and they
will be required to pay for said
damage. Damage to the rooms, beds,
fire hose of hotels is definitely the
kind of thing that makes people
turn their backs upon the activities
of high school students.
Prices for the tournament are as
follows: Friday afternoon, students
20c, adults 40c; Friday evening, 25c
and 50c; Saturday afternoon, 25c
and 50c; Saturday evening, 35c and
60c. Season tickets are 75c and $1.35;
reserved, $2.00. Complimentary pass
es will be given to the players, man
ager and coach of each team.
Officials will be Jack Lloyd 'of
Echo and "Tuck" Hodgen. These
lads, you will remember, officiated
at the tournament here at Heppner
last year.
The losing teams will pay all their
own living expenses after Saturday
morning.
Lexington apparently is becoming
stronger all the time, as they have
beaten the leading teams of both
leagues.
The statistics give no standard of
comparison between the two divis
ions, as the eastern division has
more teams in their league and has
many more games, whereas the
western division has but four teams
and a league schedule of a minimum
of six league games.
The league play-off will be one
game held at Hermiston between
Umatilla and Heppner, next Tues
day. Officials will be Jack Lloyd
and "Tuck" Dodgen. Last Friday
night decided just who the teams
were. Umatilla and Irrigon were
tied up for first place in the eastern
division, but Umatilla had one more
game to play, with Lexington, which
they won fairly easily, putting them
in an unquestioned position. Hepp
ner won over Condon, placing the
Mustangs at the top of the western
league. Umatilla and Heppner will
play it out for the championship.
Last year when these two teams
met in the sub-district tournament,
Umatilla won in an over-time game,
31-30. This year they meet with
practically the same teams as last
year, Heppner did not lose anyone,
whereas Umatilla lost one.
Here and Yon
Speaking of high scorer, one of
the best this year is a girl. She made
97 points out of her team's 102, 45
field goals and 7 foul shots.
One ex-enrollee of Heppner high
school left Heppner one night, a
month back, with fifteen cents in
his pockets. He called his folks the
other day, and the call came collect
from San Diego.
Jones of Irrigon, the highest scor
er of both leagues, was held to one
point by the Umatilla Vikings.
One of the spectators of the last
Arlington-Heppner game, upon find
ing out that a Heppner teacher was
to officiate, remarked that it didn't
seem fair. After the game was over,
the same man stated, quote: "No
one has any kick coming about that
referee, as he was just as fair for one
as the other." Good going, "Mac."
All teams going to the district
tournament will be allowed to take
nine men to the contest.
