With his family he has taken the Ike How ard place near lone. A good many years ago Walt was catcher for the Heppner baseball team and was rat ed in the top flight of "bush" catch ers of his time. The family has re sided in the Hermiston section for some time, and Walt said it was just like getting back home to be in Morrow county again. W, H. French was in the city Fri day on the way home to the farm in the mountains from a visit in Port land. Mr. French said much fog was encountered on the highway, mak ing travel uncertain and somewhat dangerous. He also reported the re cent death of "Bill Francis," the wounded deer which he picked up at his place and treated. It was a beautiful animal and he said he was sorry to lose him. Emil and Leonard Carlson were in the city yesterday appearing before the county court in the interests of having a new road built in their section of Gooseberry. It is their de sire to have the Gooseberry market road run straight up the canyon past the Gooseberry school instead of swinging around it as it does at present. . James, Jr., and Rosanna Farley motored up from Hood River Satur day and remained over Sunday vis iting at the home of their parents, Mr. and Mrs. James Farley. Both are employed at The Fair, leading Hood River department store, "Jim my" being employed in the shoe de partment. Mrs. Karl Miller was in the city Tuesday while visiting friends and relatives in the county from the farm near Salem. She said she left Mr. Miller taking care of things on the farm. Winter in the valley has been pretty wet, but' not exception ally so for' that area, she said. Mr. and Mrs. Charles Hiatt of Pendleton visited this week at the home of their daughter, Mrs. Andrew Baldwin, and family. They came Saturday from Condon with another daughter, Mrs. Harlan Devin, who also visited at the Baldwin home for a short time. Mr. and Mrs. Pirl Howell have moved to Heppner from Pendleton and have taken residence on the Dick Wells place just below town. Mr. Howell will be connected with the new Ford agency expected to open shortly in the Dick garage building. Fred Reed, manager of Reed Lum ber company on upper Rock creek, reported five to six inches of new snow there when in the city yester day. While milling operations are closed down for the season, logging operations are still going ahead. Chester Brown was called to Leb anon this week by the illness of his mother. Mrs. Brown was taken to Arlington Wednesday night by her brother, C. J. D. Baman, to take the train to Lebanon to join her husband. Homer Hughes, son of Mrs. Grace Hughes, is at Good Samaritan hos pital in Portland, undergoing treat ment for an afflicted leg with which he has suffered for several years. Heliker of lone, was in the city Tuesday, visiting at the Lundell home. Wilford Hanna, son of Mr. and Mrs. John Hanna, and cousin, Hugh Hanna of Independence visited over the week end at the home of Mr. and Mrs. Hanna on Hinton creek. Mr. and Mrs. Carl Felker mo tored to Portland Saturday evening where Mrs. Felker remained for a visit while Mr. Felker returned home Sunday. Mrs. Bessie Wisdom and her sister, Mrs. Skelton, of Dayton, Wash., ar rived Sunday for a few days' visit with relatives. A church board meeting followed, it being a joint meeting of the Umatilla, Irrigon and Boardman members. . Mr. Bishop became very ill Fri day and was taken to Hermiston hospital for treatment.
