That the warm weather of the past
week has not been seasonable and
that prospects for the new wheat
crop would be better were the fast
growing grain under a protecting
blanket of snow was the opinion ex
pressed by R. B. Rice when in from
the north Lexington wheat district
Tuesday. He hoped that there would
not be too sudden a change to zero
temperatures, since the wheat is
growing fast enough to be very ten
der. Dr. and Mrs. A. D. McMurdo mo
tored to Pendleton Sunday, taking
their nieces, the Misses Jeanette,
Florence and Marjorie Sims on their
way home to Milton-Freewater af
ter a visit here. Their son, Bernard,
and Miss Laura Breener of Port
land, holiday house guest, accom
panied them and took the train on
their way to Corvallis to resume
studies at O. S. C.
Mr. and Mrs. Joseph Belanger
arrived in the city Tuesday from
their home at Moro and Mrs. Belan
ger remained as a guest at the home
of Mr. and Mrs. P. W. Mahoney for
a couple of days while Mr. Belanger
went on to Pendleton on business
connected with his position as re
search cooperative agent with the
soils department of the Moro experi
ment station.
Miss Rachael Forsythe and Miss
Maud King, teachers, returned to
Heppner in time for the opening of
school after spending the holidays
at Ashland and Portland respective
ly. They came up by car with Miss
Forsythe's parents, Mr. and Mrs.
R. C. Forsythe, and brother Jack of
Ashland.
Mrs. Lillian Cochran and Darlene
Cole report spending an enjoyable
Christmas week end at the Louis
Marquardt farm home near Lexing
ton. Christmas dinner guests at the
.Marquardts also included Tom
Craig, and Geo. L. Lambert of Pen
dleton. Mrs. Clara Beamer motored to
Portland Sunday accompanied by
ber daughter, Miss Irene, on her
way to resume studies at O. S. C,
and Jack Aiken who returned to
military school which he has been
attending in the city.
Mr. and Mrs. Earle Bryant an
nounce the birth' of Margaret Shar
on, weighing 7 pounds, 2 ounces, at
Pendleton Saturday. Mr. Bryant re
ceived leave from his duties as dep
uty sheriff to be with Mrs. Bryant
and the baby.
Mrs. Mary Thomson departed re
cently for San Francisco to visit at
the home of her sister, Mrs. Florinda
Beymer. On the way she stopped in
Portland for a visit at the home of
her stepson, Earl Thomson.
Miss Mary White spent the holi
days with her mother, Mrs. Lena
White, and twin sister, Miss Frances
White, at Caldwell, Idaho, returning
in time to resume her teaching
duties on Tuesday.
Blaine E. Isom is taking the local
agency for a fire insurance com
pany, of which James Estets is dis
trict manager. Mr. Estes was in the
city yesterday from Pendleton sign
ing up Mr. Isom.
James Vincent, weighing 7 pounds,
arrived to Mr. and Mrs. J. V. Craw
ford at Portland, Friday.

Mr. and Mrs. W. C. McCarty and
Frances motored to Eugene Sunday
with son and brother, Paul, who re
turned to his studies at University
of Oregon.
Mr. and Mrs. John Farley of John
Day arrived in the city this morning
for a visit at the home of Mr. Far
ley's parents, Mr. and Mrs. James
Farley.
Mr. and Mrs. Frank Glasscock and
son Paul of La Grande were week
end visitors at the home of Mrs.
Glasscock's brother, Clair Ashbaugh.
Mrs. Anna Heiny went to Portland
Sunday, with Don Turner acting as
chauffeur on the return to his stud
ies at University of Oregon

Mrs. Everett Johnson and son of
Portland were visitors this week at
the home of Mrs. Johnson's father,
Dave McAtee.
Mr. and Mrs. John Anglin motored
to Yakima Sunday and returned
Monday on a combined business and
pleasure trip.
Newt O'Hara is reported improv
ing in an illness that has kept him
confined at the home in this city for
several days.
Earl Merritt of Yakima was a
week-end guest at the home of his
uncle and aunt, Mr. and Mrs. Henry
Schwarz.

of visits by the state examiners, or
to communicate with the nearest
county sheriff or city recorder, who
have copies of the examiners' sched
ules. Full-tyne offices are main
tained in Portland and Salem, and
resident and traveling examiners
take care of the balance of the state.
Between the first of July, when
100,000 copies of a pedestrian safety
pamphlet were issued by Secretary
Snell's office, and November 30,
pedestrian deaths in Oregon totaled
37; this compares with 54 for a sim
ilar period in 1937, and 72 in 1936.
