Mr. and Mrs. Tony Darland and
son of Cuprum, Idaho, and Ms. Dar-
land's father, John Sprouls, spent
Christmas in Heppner with relatives
and friends, leaving Christmas af
ternoon for The Dalles to visit bro
ther and son, Crocket Sprouls, and
family. Mr. Sprouls, Sr., a resident
here for many years, has been em
ployed in mines near Cuprum. His
eyesight is seriously affected, han
dicapping him considerably.
H. O. Tenney, former manager of
Hotel Heppner, is in the city today
making arrangements to move din
ing room equipment to Salem where
he and Mrs. Tenney have taken the
lease on the new capitol building
coffee shop. The Tenneys have been
located at Crescent City, Cal., at the
Hotel Lauff and Mr. Tenney expect
ed to return there for a time before
joining Mrs. Tenney at Salem.
Christmas guests at the home of
Rev. and Mrs. R. C. Young were
their sons, Reo W. Young, with the
News-Times at Forest Grove, and
Robert Young of Rainier. Mrs. Young
returned with them Monday to spend
a few days in Portland.
Mr. and Mrs. John Clouston and
children of Lakeview, and Mr. and
Mrs. Adolph Hayden and children of
Stanfield were Christmas guests at
the home of Mrs. Clouston's and
Mrs. Hayden's mother, Mrs. Slyvia
Devin.
Mr. and Mrs. Marvin Wightman
and children spent Christmas at the
home of Mr. Wightman's parents,
Mr. and Mrs. J. J. Wightman. Mr.
Wightman is Smith-Hughes instruct
or in the Condon high school.
Miss Marie Healy came from
Portland to spend Christmas at the
home of her parents, Mr. and Mrs.
John Healy. She has a position in
the head office, First National Bank
of Portland.
Mr. and Mrs. Clyde Wells of Pen
dleton spent Christmas at the home
of Mrs. Wells' sister, Mrs. F. E. Par
ker, on Heppner flat. Their son Billy
is attending Columbia university in
New York.
Mr. and Mrs. R. C. Phelps and
Juanita spent Christmas at Kelso,
Wash., at the home of Mr. JPhelps
brother. N. S. Phebs and family.
They returned home yesterday
morning.
Howard Cleveland is spending the
Christmas holidays at the home of
his parents, Mr. and Mrs. W. H.
Cleveland, coming from Oregon
State college where he is a student.
Mrs. Vera Reed and Mrs. Olaf
Bergstrom of Eight Mile motored
to Portland for the holidays, Mrs.
Bergstrom to be a guest at the home
of her daughter, Mrs. Charles Long.
Mr. and Mrs. Merle Becket of
Wallowa spent Christmas here with
Mr. Beckefs mother, Mrs. Daisy
Shively, and with Mrs. Becket's par
ents, Mr. and Mrs. J. G. Thomson.
Chester Darbee, depot agent, is
spending the holidays at the home
of his daughter, Mrs. Ray Rogers,
in Redmond. He is being relieved by
J. F. Sehrenbacher of Troutdale.
Mrs. P. A. Anderson came up from
her home at Astoria to spend Christ
mas at the home of her father, Gene
Campbell, and with her sister, Mrs.
W. C. McCarty, and family.
Jack Hamrick of Prineville spent
Christmas at the home of his par
ents, Mr. and Mrs. E. H. Hamrick.
He works in one of the mills at the
central Oregon town.
Miss Joyce Carlson, Oregon State
student, was visiting in Heppner
Tuesday from the home of her par
ents, Mr. and Mrs. Leonard Carlson,
in Gooseberry.
Miss Mary Driscoll come from
Portland for Christmas at the home
of her parents, Mr. and Mrs. Wm.
Driscoll. She assists in a dental of
fice in the city.

to the Willamette valley for Christ
mas with relatives and friends.

OSC Scientists Isolate
Sheep Disease Bacteria
Four kinds of bacteria which
cause diseases of Oregon sheep have
been isolated in this state for the
first time as a result of the two-year
study of diseases in range livestock
made possible by special appropria
tion of the last legislature. A brief
report on this research is contained
in the illustrated circular 130, "Spec
ial Agricultural Investigations," re
cently published by the experiment
station to give preliminary results
of 21 projects authorized by the last
legislature.
Four diseases for which causative
agents have been found are stiff
lamb disease of sheep, the "sudden
death" disease of Curry county
lambs, and the black disease which
also causes quick death. With these
four definite causative agents now
known, rapid progress should be
made in finding satisfactory reme
dies and methods for prevention,
believes J. N. Shaw, head of the vet
erinary department at Oregon State.
Some progress has already been
made in the way of control partic
ularly in connetcion with the losses
among Curry county lambs and with
a non-infectious pregnancy disease.
Bacteriological studies of lambs
dying suddenly in Curry county re
vealed an organism similar to, if not
identical with, that responsible for
