Reuben Voile Dies;
Was War Veteran
Funeral services were held from
Laurence Case Memorial chapel in
this city yesterday for Reuben W,
Voile, World war veteran and for
many years a resident of this city.
who died at the veterans' hospital
in Walla Walla Monday. Mr. Voile
had undergone treatment for stom
ach trouble at the hospital for some
time.
Alvin Kleinfeldt, Christian minis
ter, officiated at the services which
were held under auspices of Hepp
ner Post 87, American Legion. Mrs,
Russell McNeill and Charles Barlow
sang, acompanied by Mrs. J. 0
Turner. Thirty Heppner and lone
Legionnaires besides many other
friends and relatives attended the
last rites. Burial was made in the
family plot in Masonic cemetery.
Reuben W. Voile was born at Al
bany, Oregon, Dec. 15, 1890, the son
of Frederick and Victoria (Risley)
Voile. Coming to Monrow county
about 25 years ago, he enlisted in
the army from here June 1, 1918,
and served with the 63rd infantry
until the time of his discharge, May
27, 1919. He married Elizabeth Go
bel, March 5, 1921, and to this union
three children were born, Kathleen,
George and Barbara. During most
of M. Voile's residence here, which
lasted un till about a year ago when
the family moved to Walla Walla,
he was engaged in ranching and
lumbering. For a time he ran a saw
mill with his brothers on upper
Rhea creek where he also ranched.
He was a member of the local Amer
ican Legion post for a number of
years.
Besides the widow and children
he is survived by three brothers,
Fred of Wheeler county, John of
Irrigon and Dean of this city, and
one sister, Mrs. Viola Soderstrom
of Van Nuys, Cal.

Carnival Makes Profit
At Pine City Friday

The Pine City carnival was en
joyed by a large crowd last Friday
night. Receipts were seventy-two
dollars and sixty-six dollars was
cleared. The Pine City people want
to thank the people of Hermiston,
Echo and Heppner for their coop
eration in making it a success.
Mr. and Mrs. Charley Plourd and
children of Pendleton, Mr. and Mrs.
Floyd Mathers and son of Echo and
Mr. and Mrs. Hugh Neill of Weston
spent Mother's day at the W. D.
Neill home.
Jack Healy of Heppner spent the
week end at his home on Butter
creek.
Mr. and Mrs. Glen Orr spent Sun
day at the Emil Ebson home in the
Alpine district.
Malcolm O'Brien was a caller in
Hermiston Friday.
A group of Butter creek people
enjoyed the dance at Lena Satur
day night.
Joe Farley and Tom Healy of
Heppner were at the John Healy
home Saturday.
Mr. and Mrs. Ray Wright and Mr.
and Mrs. Claude Wright and son
Clayton of Heppner visited Mr. and
Mrs. Barton E. Clark Sunday.
Mr. and Mrs. Clayton Ayers were
Sunday dinner guests at the Pat
McLaughlin home. 1
Mr. and Mrs. John Healy were in
Heppner Monday.
Mr. and Mrs. Fred Rauch motored
to Pilot Rock Saturday and to Cecil
Sunday.
Mr. and Mrs. Marion Finch spent
Monday evening at the Clayton
Ayers home.
Miss Dora Moore spent the week
end at the J. S. Moore home.
The Umatilla and Morrow county
courts were viewing the Big Butter

Miss Hager, Honoree,
To Enter OSC in Fall
Oregon State College, Corvallis,
May 12 (Special) Harriet Hager,
who will be graduated from Hepp
ner high school this spring, is one
of 50 high school seniors to be grant
ed state board of higher education
scholarships to attend Oregon State
next year.
Ranking in the upper third of her
class in scholarship, Miss Hager was
highly recommended for the honor
by Robert D. Knox, principal of the
Heppner high school, and others who
commented on her record for the
benefit of the state high school con
tacts committee which makes the
selections.
Described as a natural leader, Miss
Hager has taken an active part in

and two stitches were required to
close the wound.

here from their home at Hidaway
