The game was very even, with Heppner leading by one point at the end of their half of the last inning, hut Condon succeeded in getting the tying and winning runs in their half of the same inning. H.H.S. Junior-Senior Banquet and Prom Coming Next Saturday The annual Junior-Senior banquet will be held Saturday, May 14, at the Parish house. The dinner is be ing served by the Episcopal ladies. Each year the junior class sponsors this banquet in honor of the senior graduating class. After dinner there will be several speeches, including those of Mrs. Rodgers, Mr. Blankenship, Mr. Knox, Spencer Crawford, Paul McCarty, and several others. Immediately after the banquet there will be a prom at the local gymnasium-auditorium. The entire Heppner high school is invited, and they in turn may invite one outside friend. The admission cost is 65c a couple, 40c for gentlemen without ladies, and 25c for ladies without gentlemen. The decorations for the prom will portray a garden scene, with a big yellow moon overhead. Lighting ef fects will be in the form of a large lilac chandelier. During intermission a very enter taining floor show will be presented, featuring both grade and high school talent. Music will be furnished by the Rhythmeers. H.H.S. School Publishing Annual For the first time in three years, Heppner high school is publishing an annual, the Heppnerian. Under the supervision of Miss Smith, the students are doing the writing, typ ing, and mimeograph work. Annuals will be available Monday for the cost of $1.25 each. The students composing the staff are as follows: Editor, Maxine Mc Curdy; Assistant Editor, La Verne Van Marter; Advertising Manager, Joe Aiken; Subscription Manager, Scott McMurdo; Sports Editor, Paul McCarty; Social Editor, Harriet Ha ger; Club News Editor, Frances Mc Carty; Class News Editor, Jackson Gilliam; Faculty, John Crawford; Dramatic Editor, Ruth Green; Art Editor, Bill Barratt; Assistant Art Editor, Art McAtee; Band News Ed itor, Carolyn Vaughn; Humor Editor, Arlene Morton; Assistant Humor Editor, Bethal Blake; Treasurer, Betty Robinson. H H S , PINTO-POINTS The sports double-header today between Heppner and Hermiston on the local athletic grounds offers something new in competitive enter tainment for Heppner sport fans . . . this sports feature, which will be inaugurated here, is that of tennis . . . Heppner hasn't had a tennis team since 1917, but with the recent construction of two hard-surfaced ? courts, which resulted in a surpris ing interest in tennis, both grade and high school, A. H. Blankenship con sented to instruct a Mustang net squad . . . the team has tied one match, that with Pendleton, and lost one to Hermiston ... the inexper ience of the local players, three freshmen, a junior, and two seniors, perhaps accounts for the none-too- Heppner remarkable record thus far this sea son, but a win over Hermiston, the predicted Umatilla county champion, will give Heppner an upset victory. The other half of the double-header is a baseball game between Hepp ner and the Bulldogs . . . some are rather' fearful of this game's out come, especially if the errors total up as they did in the last game at Hermiston . . . the final score was 25 to 2, with Heppner sadly claim ing the latter figure. Last week Coach, Knox gave his physical education students one of the stiffest tests possible when he gave the boys in his gym classes an order, as an examination of physical condition and endurance, to take ten laps around the track at the rodeo grounds, to be completed in 41 minutes . . . each lap is a distance of one-fourth mile, and ten such trips make a total of two and a half miles . . . some of the fellows kept up a consistent pace for the entire two and a half miles, jogging along at a dog trot, some even sprinting the last lap . . . others couldn't keep up a trot; some couldn't even pro duce a fast walk . . . the best part of the show was the after-effects ... some of the speedier lads paid for their flashy demonstration, for as soon as they finished, they were practically forced to take advantage of the opportunity to rest their weakened anatomy ... it was all some could do to walk back to the gym . . . after the distance men reached the gym, they sat down on the first stable object that came in sight, and there was no moving them until they felt physically able to head for the showers . . . one boy thought he would demonstrate his reserve strength and chin himself on an overhead bar ... it took two attempts to raise his chin to the level of the bar . . . after he suc ceeded, he called it quits and gently eased himself against the wall for a longer rest. Quoting an item carried by Dick Jones' sport column in last Satur day's East Oregonian: "Note to coaches at Oregon and Eastern Ore gon Normal: Ellwynne E. Peck, Lex ington, and La Verne Van Marter, Heppner, recently awarded scholar ships to the university, are, respec tively, track and basketball stars." The paragraph then expressed the abilities of two other lads who were granted scholarships to the La Grande normal. However, in con nection with the two previously mentioned Morrow county athletes, Peck and Van Marter, especially the latter, are undoubtedly outstanding track and basketball men, but their ability in football far exceeds any thing they have ever shown in either track or basketball . . . playing with Lexington's six-man football team last fall, Peck displayed some real football talent in his ball carrying and blocking, while Van Marter, who captained Heppner's gridiron eleven, led his team to several victories with his 195 pounds smashing forward walls of many eastern Oregon foot ball teams ... in fact Van Marter is considered of such football calibre that John Warren, University of Or egon frosh coach, called on him some time ago in connection with his playing football with the Webfoot freshman squad next falL H.H.S. Band Trip to Pendleton The Heppner school band jour neyed to Pendleton last1 Saturday to participate in the Bargain Days celebration which marked the end of National Music week. After marching through the streets the band played a concert on the street. The people of Pendleton were very enthusiastic over the band. H.H.S. Track Team Fourth at Condon The Heppner track team took part in the track meet held in Condon last Saturday. The boys did very well, placing fourth. Guy Moore placed first in the broad jump and second in the two-twenty. Arthur Vance was fourth in the high jump and third in the half-mile. Bill Blake ran fourth in the mile. Scores of the top four teams were as follows: Con don 51, Arlington 50, Wasco 13 and Heppner 12. H.H.S. Vacation Nears As vacation nears and school is nearly out, many students forget their sole purpose of going to school and start slackening up on their work. Semester examinations will be given next Tuesday and Wednesday, and until then we had better not forget what our books are used for. The seniors, above all, should take all precaution in their work. They not only have to worry about per haps not graduating but also since this is their last year in school, about leaving with a clean slate and a good name. H.H.S. Fifth Grade News Of the fifth and sixth grade di vision, Alden Greeley received sec ond place in the poppy poster con test. Alden is in the fifth grade. This contest is sponsored by the Ameri can Legion Auxiliary. Joseph Hughes received honorable mention for his poster. We had our regular meeting Monday. H.H.S. We Know Them By ' Jack Merrill Temper. Humor Some people have all the luck. We know a fellow who was born with a silver spoon in his mouth, and now he has a gold plate there. It is rumored that Kemp Dick has written to Washington, outlining his latest scheme for spending Gov ernment money. He suggests cov ered roadways be constructed in all sections where there are heavy snowfalls by merely roofing across from billboard to billboard. Matrimony says, "I do" Alimony says, "I due." Dictators are great humorists they can gag a whole population. The European dove of peace seems to be reposing in a machine gun nest. Oregon Teacher: "What is the formula sign for water?" Art Md: "H-I-J-K-L-M-N-O." Teacher: "What do you mean?" Art: "Why, you said it was H to O."
