WILLOWS GRANGE NEWS
Willows grange will.be host to
Morrow County Pomona grange at
Cecil, Jan. 8. Besides the regular
business there will be a program at
1:30 to which the general public is
invited. Musical numbers and ad
dresses on subjects of interest to
the people of the community will be
featured.
Willows grange held its December
business meeting at Cecil Sunday
morning, Dec. 26. J. O. Kincaid was
elected master as Alex Kuber had
declined to serve in that capacity.
Subordinate election of state officers
was held. At the close of the business
meeting pot-luck dinner was served
to the members and visitors present.
In the afternoon a program and
Christmas tree party for nearly 100
members and friends was held. The
program featured a candlelight cer
emony and most of the numbers
centered around that topic. The hall
-was beautifully decorated with bells,
-wreaths, red and green roping and
a lighted tree.
Candle holders in the shape of
.yule logs were placed all about the
room holding dozens of candles,
which were lighted as a part of the
program by three.young ladies of the
grange. The program was as follows:
Opening song, "Joy to the World,"
by all; prayer, Rev. Hinkle; paper,
"Christmas Trees and Christmas
Candles," by Mary Lundell; light
ing of the Christmas candles, by
Three Graces, Dorothy Brady, Har
riet Heliker and Helen Lindsay;
song, "The Christmas Story," by Pa
tricia Drake; guitar numbers, "Beau
tiful Isle of Somewhere" and "Si
lent Night," by Billie Eubanks; rec
itation, "Kriss Kringle," by Estelle
Ledbetter; vocal solo, "I Heard the
Bells on Christmas Day," by Donald
Heliker, accompanied by Veda Eu
banks; recitation, "The Night Be
fore Christmas," Harold Brinkman;
paper, "Christmas at the White
House," Mary Lindsay; vocal duet,
"His Lowly Birthplace," Mildred
and Helen Lundell, accompanied by
Gladys Drake; recitation, "Horse
and Buggy Days," Donald Ball; song
by all, "It came Upon the Midnight
Clear;" Living Christmas Tree, ten
little girls dressed in green dresses
with tinsel trimmings and lighted
candles; closing song, "Silent Night,"
by all.
After the closing song old Santa
Claus made his appearance, to the
delight of the youngsters and old
sters and with the help of some of
the young folk dispersed treats of
candy, nuts and oranges to all pres
ent, and sent many packages away
to those who were unable to attend.
Water Erosion Claims Attention
With the increase in trashy sum
merfallow acreage from practically
nothing a few years ago to some
40,000 acres in 1937, the emphasis on
soil conservation work in Morrow
county is shifting from wind erosion
to water erosion, says County Agent
Joe Belanger. Although less spec
tacular, water erosion has probably
caused greater and more permanent
losses over most of the Columbia
Basin counties than wind, he says.

American Home Education Praised
Corvallis American colleges are
far ahead of those in England in
adapting home economics education
to the modern student needs, writes
C. Winifred Harley, visiting professor
at Oregon State college this year, in
an article published in an English
Journal, "The New Era." Professor
Harlow devotes most of the article
to a description of the practical
training in nursery school and home
management houses afforded at Ore
gon State, and concludes with the
query: "When will the Domestic
Science colleges in England begin to
open nursery schools and take a ser
ious interest in the psychological as
well as the physical factors which
affect a happy and comfortable home
life?"
