Underwood Home
Burns at Hardman

The home of Mr. and Mrs. Slim
Underwood burned Sunday. Mr.
Underwood had built a fire and
gone off and left it. Mrs. Underwood
was away from home at the time.
Nothing was saved.
Mrs. Carl Leathers and Jean vis
ited their home in Hardman Satur
day and Sunday. She came with her
brother-in-law, Archie Leathers,
who had his arm cut and got a lay
off. Mrs- Owen Leathers was elected
president of the "Community Sings"
and Mrs. Max Buschke as secretary
treasurer. The new books, "America
Sings," are here, and a committee
consisting of Mrs. Muriel McCut
cheon, Miss Iris Morton and Mrs.
Max Buschke was appointed to
choose a supplementary book. It is
planned that at each meeting there
will be a special number. On Wed
nesday Miss Morton and Mrs. Neal
Knighten sang a duet.
The voters of Dist. 40 met at the
school house Saturday to pass the
budget. There were only four votes
cast, all of them "yes."
The whole high school was em
ployed Thursday and Friday mend
ing, shellacking and listing library
books. The high school is being ren
ovated and there will be new shelves
for the books. 1
Mrs. Owen Leathers was in Hepp
ner Saturday and again Monday.
Mr. and Mrs. Roy Robison and
sons, Donald and Creston, left for
Montana early Saturday mornnig.
Mr. Robison is looking over a herd
of purebred cattle and if they meet
his expectations he will buy a car
load to be shipped to Condon.
Sunday school was organized on
Sept. 12. Mrs- Irl Clary was elected
superintendent, Miss Iris Morton or
ganist, Mrs. Muriel McCutcheon,
leader of singing, and Mrs. Sabin
Hastings, secretary-treasurer. Miss
Iris Morton is teacher of the Bible

ganized the first week of school, and
named "The Little Citizens." It is
held two days a week and the teach
ers are Francis Inskeep and Opal
Hastings. Those present at the last
meeting were Jean Louise Shunk,
Lilly Hastings, Sylvia Clemmer,
Joyce Buschke, Carol Buschke,
Yvonne Hastings, Bobby Lee, Billy
Lee and Harley Gallakher.
Mr. and Mrs. Victor Johnson nad
family, Mr. and Mrs. Raymond Mc
Donald and son and Mr. and Mrs.
Richard Robison motored to Hood
River last week to visit Mrs. Mc
Donald's and Mrs. Robison's sister,
Mrs. Earl Redding. Mrs. Robison
remained for an indefinite visit.
Mrs. Neal Knighten, Miss Iris
Morton and Mrs. Muriel McCutch
eon were business visitors in Hepp
ner Saturday.
Mr. and Mrs. Elmer Musgrave of
Fox were visiting relatives and
friends here Saturday.
Mrs. Tom Mclntyre is ill at her
home in Burton valley.
Darrel Farrens and Mrs. Coats
went to Pendleton to see a doctor.
They were accompanied by Walter
Wright, Murl Farrens and Delsie
Bleakman.
Week-end guests at the Owen
Leathers home were Mr. and Mrs.
Emery Moore, Dr. McMurdo, Mr.
and Mrs. Carl McDaniel and Ivan
Leathers.
Kenneth Batty left Sunday for
Portland to take in the stock show.
Mrs. Lucy Rodgers and the county
nurse with the audiometer were in
Hardman last Wednesday. The
teachers and pupils from Burton
valley and Hale Ridge were here,
also.

Mr. and Mrs. Louis Marquardt
have just returned from a ten-day
trip, stopping at Kennewick, Seattle
and Portland. They visited with their
son, young George Lambirth, at
Stanwood, Wash., where he is at
tending high school and helping on
a fox farm. They also saw the presi
dent pass on his way to Timberline
lodge. Rain was pouring in both
Portland and Seattle in contrast to
Morrow county's sunshine-
Frank Holub and mother were
visitors in the city Friday from the
