Hardman School
Starts With 31 Pupils

The grade schools opened Monday
with an enrollment of 21. Mrs. Mur
iel McCutcheon, who comes well
recommended from Wolf Creek, has
the first four grades. Miss Iris Mor
ton, who has been teaching at Cul
ver and is an honorary graduate of
E. O. N., has the 5th, 6th, 7th and
8th grades and is principal of the
school. High school started Tuesday,
Sept. 7, with an enrollment of 10.
Mrs. Marie Clary is beginning the
fifth year as high school principal
here.
Mr. and Mrs. Albert Schunk and
family are living at the Swift house.
They have been working at Reed's
mill.
Mrs. Jim Burnside and Mrs. Blaine
Chapel were up from their Rood
canyon ranches one day last week
Mrs. Burnside states that harvest is
just getting under way at their place
with a fairly good yield.' Mrs. Chapel
leaves next Sunday for Olex where
she was reelected as principal of the
school.
Frank Kurth who has been work
ing for Clyde Wright was in town
the first of the week making prep
arations to cut cord wood at the Lo
tus Robison ranch.
Mrs. J. B. Adams who is cooking
for hay hands at the Clyde Wright
ranch spent Sunday and Monday at
home.
Forest Adams, who sews sacks on
the combine cutting at the Cannon
ranch, was home Sunday and Mon
day.
Hardman and vicinity received
some good rains last week which was
all right for those through harvest
ing but not so good for those in
progress.
Mrs. Walter Farrens and Misses
Lucille and Dolly are spending a
while at their home here.
Mrs. Maud Ribison had a few days
of vacation from her work at Jim
Hams' ranch which she spent at her
home here.
Mr. and Mrs. Sam McDaniel, Jr,
and Maxine have j moved to the
mountains to make wood. Maxine
will go to school at Burton valley,
Miss Loes Stevens has returned
from Hamilton for school.. Her par
ents remained in Hamilton for the
winter. Loes is staying with Mrs,
McCutcheon.
Mrs. Stanley Robinson and Doris
Ray and Miss Charlotte Adams mo
tored to Kinzua Sunday. They were
. guests of Mrs. Lawrence Fleming.
Mr. and Mrs. Victor Lovgren were
in town Sunday. They brought Rose
Merritt to stay with her aunt, Mrs,
Owen Leathers. Miss Merritt will
attend high school here this winter,
Mr. and Mrs. Frank McDaniel
. were visiting Mrs. McDaniel's par
ents, Mr. and Mrs. Wes Stevens, in
Hamilton Sunday.
Neal Knighten took his parents.
Mr. and Mrs. Lewis Knighten, to
Portland Monday. Both Mr. and Mrs,
Knighten have been ill for some
time. Mrs. Golda Leathers of Lex
ington went to care for them while
in Portland.
Vonnie Adams is staying with his
sister, Mrs. Duff McKitrick, while
his mother, Mrs. J. B. Adams, is
working at the Clyde Wright ranch
Mr. and Mrs. Kenneth Bleakman
and Nita Rae and Miss Neva Bleak
man motored to Boardman Friday,
Nita Rae remained with her grand
parents, Mr. and Mrs. 'J. J. McDon
aid, and will go to school there.
Mr. and Mrs Harold Smith of Port
Gamble, Wash, and Albert Hessel
tine visited Sabin Hastings last week,
Mr. and Mrs. John Adams are back
for a three weeks' visit. They own
a ranch below Hardman but for sev
eral years have been living in Port
land.
Delvin McDaniel and Richard
Robison were business visitors in
Monument Saturday.
Guy Chapin has returned to his
work. He has been herding sheep
for Ray Wright.
Frank McDaniel returned to ship
sheep camp. Claude Hastings herded
in Mr. McDaniel's absence.
Edna and Lura Stephens will at
tend high school here this winter,
Miss Ilo Merrill is visiting her
mother and grandmother in Hepp
ner this week. From there she will
go on to her school.
Mrs. Max Buschke and children
are back in town for school. They
spent the summer in the mountains
with Mr. Buschke who works for
the forest service.
Shorty Dufault is papering this
week at the Jim Hams home.
Joe Batty moved his daughter,
Beulah Bell, to Kinzua, .Mrs. Bell
is teaching there this year.
A new furnace is being installed
in the high school building.
Miss Delsle Bleakman is quite ill
at her home.

C. L. Lieuallen of Pendleton.
White on his ranch southwest of
town for the past several years sold
out and moved to Pendleton where
Mr. Horner has employment.
Mrs. McDermott who has been
visiting her sister, Mrs. H. D. Rut
ledge, returned to her home in Ta
coma, Wash., last week.
Miss Norma Gieves of Mason City,
Wn., visited her mother, Mrs. Wilma
Grieves, last week.
Miss Francis Tigglebeck resigned
her position as primary teacher in
the Irrigon school. Miss Dusenberg
of Weiser, Idaho, has accepted the
position and has moved into one of
the Leicht cabins.
Clyde Caldwell of The Dalles is
visiting his brother, Fred Caldwell
Mr. and Mrs. C. Phelps have rent
ed the Chas. Benefiel place and will
move soon.
Mrs. Ryder was in town a short
time last week and states she will
move back to her place west of town

soon. Mr. and Mrs. Emery Bediwell
who have been living on Mrs. Ry
der's place are moving to their house
in town.
Mr. and Mrs. Will Grabiel have
moved into the Josephine Grabiel
residence.
Mr. and Mrs. Lyle Eddy arrived
from Portland Sunday where they
have been visiting Mrs. Eddys sis
ter and will live in the Clair Cald
well cabin for the coming school
year.
Mr. and Mrs. Ralph Jones have
moved into the Leicht cabins. Mr.
Jones is school superintendent for
the coming year.
Miss Boling arrived Saturday and
will board and room with Mrs. Ollie
Coryell.
Miss Clark from Eugene is the new
high school teacher.
Mrs. Ray Brown and children left
recently for Eugene.
Mr. and Mrs. Arnburg were Pilot
Rock visitors Sunday.
School opened in town Tuesday
with the entire teaching staff on
hand ready for the work of the com
ing year.
Tom Craig was" a business visitor
in town Tuesday from the Lexington
section.
