HEPPNER GAZETTE TIMES, HEPPNER, OREGON, THURSDAY, MAY 20, 1937. PAGE SEVEN State Farmers Get Best Radio Market Service A more complete program of mar ket reports and information is broad cast over the state-owned radio sta tion KOAC by the Oregon State col lege extension service than is pro vided over any other station in the United States, it is revealed in a summary of market news radio broadcasting for 1937 just issued at Washington, D. C. Most of the' material used in the KOAC market broadcasts is received direct from the government market news leased wire service operated by the bureau of agricultural economics Corvallis is one of 48 receiving sta tions scattered throughout the United States connected by 10,500 miles of leased wire. Reports are prepared for broadcasting immediately in the office of L. R. Breithaupt, extension economist, which enables spot news of trading in the principal markets to reach the Oregon farm listeners within a few hours of the time the trading actually takes place in the leading cities of the United States and foreign countries. ' "Oregon farmers sell an average of approximately $300,000 worth of produce every business day," says Breithaupt. "In an effort to make available for this farm marketing task most prompt and accurate ser vice possible market news broadcast ing has been developed at Oregon State college. That it is of real ben efit to the producer is indicated by letters received from practically ev ery county in the state as a result of market news broadcast." This is the sixteenth year of radio broadcasting of market news infor mation in the country as a whole, and the tenth year at O. S. C. It be gan in a small way in Oregon with the broadcasting of a monthly review of the agricultural situation, and weekly reviews of the market situa tion in respect to such staples as , wheat, wool, and dairy products. It was in November, 1928, that daily market news programs were made possible with the installation of the direct leased wire service at Corvallis. In the years since that time the service has been expanded until now spot market reports are broadcast twice daily in all farm Want Ads Lost On the Lex-Echo highway about 2 mi. north of Lex., used trans mission shaft with gears attached. The unlimited time available over the state-owned station, plus the direct hook-up with the government leased wire service gives Oregon farmers an unequalled opportunity to keep abreast of latest market de velopments, says Breithaupt. La Grande Ships Most Ladak Seed La Grande The Blue Mountain Seed Growers' association at La Grande, which handles Ladak alfalfa, crested wheat grass and other seeds, has completed a successful marketing season. While many larger commer cial seed houses have had difficulty in moving Ladak alfalfa because many people are yet unacquainted with it, the Blue Mountain associa tion, which had more Ladak seed to sell than any other agency in the United States, disposed of it easily and at a considerable premium over other alfalfas, it is reported. The association sold seed to every state in the west and made small ship ments to foreign countries. NOTIClf OF ANNUAL SCHOOL MEETING.
