HARDMAN

Jack DeVore is ill at the home of
his father, B. F. DeVore. He is suf
fering from an attack of the flu.
James Brannon motored to Hepp
ner Monday to take his brother Mar
vin who was returning to the CCC
camp at Brush creek.
Carl Leathers returned to Arling
ton Friday to resume his work there.
A party was given at the home of
Mr. and Mrs. Raymond McDonald
Dancing and card playing were en
joyed by those present. Delicious
refreshments were served by the
hostess.
The Odd Fellows and Rebekahs
held joint installation at the hall
Saturday evening. Glen Farrens,
who came in from Cason canyon to
attend, stalled his car in a snow drift
and had to walk in.
Hardman and vicinity are exper
iencing some real winter weather.
The snow is badly drifted with about
six inches of new snow. It is be
lieved that if it were on the level it
would measure about three feet of
snow. The mercury ranges from
zero to 10 above.
Carey Hastings departed for Pas
co, Wash., Monday to tag sheep. He
recently purchased a Pontiac car
from the Dennis Motor company at
Pendleton.
Mrs. Dee Schnitzer returned from
Heppner Monday. She states that
Mr. Schnitzer is getting along satis
factorily. Ed Warren returned from Hepp
ner Monday where he has been vis
iting for a week.
Miss Vera McDaniel and her
grandmother Allen celebrated their
birthday anniversaries Sunday, Jan.
17, at their home here.
Uncle Sam McDaniel is on the sick
list this week.
Max Buschke went to work at the
Clyde Wright place Tuesday.
Mrs. Tom Brown has been staying
with the Schnitzer boy while Mrs.
Schnitzer was with her husband in
Heppner.
Frank McDaniel is taking a va
cation from his duties at the Ray
Wright sheep ranch.
Kinnard McDaniel went to the
mountains Thursday.
Neal Knighten was transacting
business in Heppner Monday.
Traveling has been quite difficult
regardless of the snow plow that
comes out from Heppner every day
Saturday evening four cars were
stuck in snow drifts on the Hard
man grade.
Mrs. Katherine Tompkins went
to Heppner Saturday to consult a
dentist.
Mrs. Ada Cannon motored to
Heppner Wednesday.
PINE CITY

Roy Neill spent the week end in
balem with his daughter, Mrs. Eldon
Kinton.
Pendleton callers Friday were
Marion Finch and Bert Barnes.
Mr. and Mrs. E. B. Wattenburger
and children were Hermiston call
ers Friday night.
H. E. Young spent Tuesday in
Hermiston.
The Young family have been ill
with the flu lately.
Lon Wattenburger returned to
Pendleton Monday. He is serving
on the jury there.
Mrs. Roy Neill was a caller one
day last week at the E. B. Watten
burger home.
A dance was given at the Julian
Rauch home Saturday night. Due
to the snow storm few from Butter
creek attended.
Word was received from Earl Wat
tenburger that he likes his work fine
in the mill at Toppenish.
Butter creek people dislike to work
in the snow now but they'll be glad
next June or July that they had it.

BOARDMAN

The high school basketball team
played Echo last Tuesday with
Boardman as the winners. The
game was played at Echo.
The regular grange meeting was
held Saturday evening with a large
attendance! Claude Silvernail was
taken into the grange.
A dance was given at Tom's camp
last Sunday evening. People from
Hermiston furnished the music and
a good crowd attended.
The high school basketball team
won another victory on their own
court when they played Stanfield
Friday evening. The grade school
also won their game . '
Missionary meeting was held at
the home of Mrs. Jesse Allen this
week. Everyone brought a basket
filled with one kind of food to ex
change. An interesting meeting was
enjoyed.
The H. E. club held their regular
meeting at Mrs. Coat's home last
week. The women came and got
dinner for the men who were work
ing on the grange kitchen.
Mrs. Shannon who has been ill in
the hospital is home again with her
daughter, Mrs. Bill Lilly.
Dave Johnston returned home last
week from Portland where he won
the diamond belt of the heavy
weight group. Everyone is very
proud of Dave.
The town team met the Echo town
team Monday night on Echo's floor.
A very interesting game was played
with Boardman winning with a
score of 35-34.
Mrs. Bell Spagle returned to her
home Thursday evening after spend
ing some time with her mother, Mrs.
Leslie Packard, who is seriously ill.
A train wreck occurred near Wes
ton Saturday night. The sections
were all called to help with it. The
Castle, Coyote and Messner sections
of Boardman were called.
CHILD STILLBORN.
Jo Marlene, stillborn daughter of
Mr. and Mrs. Virgil Gentry of Rhea
creek, was buried in Masonic ceme
tery yesterday afternoon with com
mitment services at the grave read
by Alvin Kleinfeldt, Christian min
ister. The child was born in this
city Tuesday night. Mrs. Gentry
was "formerly Miss Inez Hayes, a
queen of the Heppner Rodeo.

munity, were business visitors in the
city Monday. Their country is cov
ered with a good blanket of snow,
welcomed as insurance for the new
wheat crop.
