PAGE EIGHT IONE By MARGARET BLAKE Paul O'Meara was elected to serve the remainder of the unexpired term of Earl Blake, resigned, on the school board. A meeting for this election was held at the school house last Saturday afternoon. , The Union Sunday school had its Christmas program at the Christian church last Sunday evening. A pro gram of songs and recitations was enjoyed by a large crowd. Treats for everyone were given out after wards. Last Saturday evening after the regular grange meeting the men of Willows grange entertained the la dies with a program and supper, Tamales were served and all present say the affair was a decided success and that the men amply paid the penalty of losing a contest for mem bership and attendance. Morrow County Pomona grange will be held at Boardman on Janu ary 2nd. A Christmas program and treats for members of Willows grange and their families will be given at Cecil December 26th at their hall. This is the regular grange meeting night Mr. and Mrs. Ture Peterson are spending Christmas at the home of Mrs. Peterson's parents, Mr. and Mrs. Frank Spittle, in Astoria. W. F. and John Honey were bus iness visitors here Tuesday from their home in Gresham. Miss Linea Troedson, a teacher in Girls' Polytechnic school in Port land, is at the home of her parents Mr. and Mrs. John Troedson, for the holidays. Parties and programs in the va rious rooms were enjoyed in the school Wednesday. On Tuesday eve ning the school children sang Christ mas carols around town with a feed at the school house afterwards. Va cation began with the close of schoo! Wednesday afternoon and schoo! will begin again on January 4, 1937 I. R. Robison returned Monday from The Dalles where he has been in the hospital recovering from a tonsilectomy. Mrs. Sadie Wade and son Ralph and Mr. and Mrs. Lou Palmateer came up from their home at Estaca da to see W. F. Palmateer who is in the hospital at Heppner. Mrs. Wade and Lou Palmateer are his sister and brother. Miss Ella Mason of Portland is visiting her brother, Bert Mason, and other relatives. With the close of school the teach ers have gone to their various homes. Miss Frances Stewart to Silverton, Miss Helen Ralph to Salem, Miss Lorraine Reed to Mitchell, Miss An ita Baumgardner to Portland, Mrs. Roy Brown to Hermiston and Alex ander McDonald to Banks. Mr., and Mrs. Elmer Griffith mo tored to the valley last week end to bring home their daughter, Virginia, who is a student at Linfield college at McMinnville. Kenneth Smouse is home from O. S. C. Mrs. Clarence McMurray of Mul len, Idaho, arrived at Hermiston last Friday where she was met by Mr. and Mrs. Laxton McMurray. On Saturday night she and Laxton Mc Murray departed by train for Phoen ix, Arizona, where they will visit Clarence McMurray who is in a san itarium there. Mr. and Mrs. Noel Dobyns have gone to Olympia, Wash., to spend Christmas with Mrs. Dobyns parents. Miss Eva Swanson is home for the holidays from 0. S. C. Francis Troedson will be home from his school at Airlie on Ihurs day. Mrs. Bert Mason motored to Port land last Friday, returning home Monday with her son, Bert, Jr., who has been attending high school there, Mr. and Mrs. E. W. Christopherson and family will spend Christmas with Mr. Christopherson's parents, Mr. and Mr. J. W. Christopherson in Portland. Eugene Normoyle and Paul Smouse, students at Pacific univer sity, are home for the holidays. At the installation of officers of 'the Masonic and O. E. S. lodges last Wednesday night Mrs. Viola Lieu- allen was presented with a past ma tron's jewel and gifts and flowers were presented to Mrs. Roxy Krebs; worthy matron, Alex Huber, wor shipful master, and Mrs. Viola Lieu alien, installing officer. A very pleasant afternoon was spent last Thursday at the home of Mrs. Fred Markham when the Home Economics club ladies surprised her with a handkerchief shower. A Christmas program was pre sented by the children at the Chris tian church Sunday morning. This was followed by a Christmas tree and treats for all the youngsters. Mrs. Annis Helms and grand daughter, Edna Hurlburt, left last week for Yosemite, California, where they will spend the winter with rel atives. College students who are home for the holidays are Ellen Nelson, Fred Nelson and Kenneth Smouse, from Oregon State college; Llewel lyn Evans from University of Ore gon, and Paul Smouse from Pacific university. Mildred Hunt has returned home from the Heppner hospital where she recently underwent an operation for appendicitis. S. G. McMillan, Sam McMillan and Charles Schriever have returned from a trip to Portland. Lexington grade and high schools were closed for the Christmas vaca tion period Wednesday afternoon. Classes will be resumed Monday, January 4. Vernon Scott and Laurel Kuhl made a business trip to Portland last week. Mr. and Mrs. Orville Cutsforth were visitors in Pendleton Saturday. Mr. and Mrs. Howard Slonecker of Corvallis are spending the Christ mas holidays with Mrs. Slonecker's parents, Mr. and Mrs. A. H. Nelson. Rev. J. R. Benton of Fort Benton, Mont, will conduct services at the Christian church Sunday morning. Mr. and Mrs. George McMillan of Cherryville are visiting relatives in this community. The Heppner high school basket ball team defeated the Lexington five in a fast game on the Heppner floor Monday evening. The score was 24 to 20. Lee Shaw of Hermiston spent a few days of this week at the home of his uncle, Hugh Shaw. Several Christmas parties were given this week by the teachers of the Christian Bible school. Mr. and Mrs. George Gillis entertained their classes, and on Thursday afternoon Mrs. Lorena Miller and Mrs. Roy Campbell gave a party for the pri mary and beginners classes. HARDMAN By LUCILLE FARRENS The Odd Fellows and Rebekahs enjoyed a party at the I. O. O. F, hall Saturday. Presents were ex changed by the members and treats were given to the children. Mr. and Mrs. Elmer Musgrave of Fox visited over the week end with Mr. and Mrs. J. W. Stevens. Mrs. Gladys Corrigall, Raymond and Roger Howell of Echo visited Saturday and Sunday with friends and relatives here. Mrs. George Samuel returned home with them. Martin Lovgren was calling here Monday. The small daughter of Mrs. Carey Hastings is ill at their home here, The townspeople were invited to the high, school Tuesday to hear a debate the pupils were having. A program was presented by the grade school Friday night. Treats were given to all the small children and some of the older one. Mr. King and Mrs. Tompkins are spending the Christmas holiday in Portland. They expect to resume their work here next Monday, the 28th. Miss Dolly Farrens went to Hepp ner Friday to consult a dentist. Mr. and Mrs. Blaine Chapel made business trip to Heppner Satur day. Max Buschke and Ad Inskeep were transacting business in Heppner Saturday. Mr. and Mrs. W. F. Gallagher and family are spending the holidays in Walla Walla. Mrs. Casha Shaw is employed at the home of Mrs. Neal Knighten. A party was given at the high school Thursday evening. Treats were given those present. Frank Fraters was calling here Monday. Irl Clary returned fiome Saturday from the Frank Fraters farm where he has been working. Marion Robertson had a stroke Monday morning. He is reported to be resting well and in no pain. Mrs. Joyce Smith plans to spend the Christmas vacation at the home of her folks in Irrigon.
