T HE annual Red Cross roll call has started. The time has come to provide funds for another year to carry on America's greatest hu manitarian relief organization. Directed and controlled by non salaried officers composed of men and women of unimpeachable moral character the high executive, Pres ident Roosevelt himself being hon orary chairman this organization is first at the scene of disaster, dressing wounds, administering suc cor against cold and starvation. We In Morrow county know the benefits which this great organiza tion provides. After the flood of May 29, 1934, Red Cross relief head quarters were set up In Heppner for two months, dispensing funds in work of rehabilitation, totalling more than $2300. That is more than this county contributes to the or ganiaztion in several years' time. The Red Cross has only the mon ey from the annual roll call with which to keep Intact the large, nec essary organization ready to func tion at a moment's notice of disas ter. The national organization re ceives less than fifty per cent of the membership money, the remainder staying at home for use in local emergencies. The dollar asked for Individuals and five dollars for the group memberships is a small pre mium to pay for humanitarian in surance. Again this year let's put Morrow county over the top. A heart and a dollar are the only qualifications for membership in the Red Cross. Have You Received Yours? TE HAVE just received our sta- tistical blank for supplying in formation to the Social Security board. If you are a farmer, you didn't receive one, for farmers are exempt But if you are in business and employ one or more persons, then you did, or presumably should have, received one of these blanks. It tells you that the government is going to give you something af ter you reach 65 years of age, that is if you are one of the employed. It doesn't say that beginning Jan uary first it is going to tax your pay check and take an equal amount from the employer to give you that security; and it doesn't take into account the fact that the life expectancy of the average per son is considerably less than 65 years. However, our benevolent govern ment is going to take the tax just the same, and take a chance on us those of us who are employed attaining the 65-year mark. Well, anyway, if we do and have paid in enough to justify it, then the gov ernment is going to make us a present What we have been wondering is, shall we drop the old-line insur ance we are now carrying on the assurance that the money the gov ernment is going to force us to give up will take care of us' in the same emergencies we have been trying to provide against and which we be- lieve we have pretty well provided against if we can hang onto the in surance we already have? 1937 AAA Program Soon To Have Details Fixed Early completion and announce ment of details of the 1937 agricul tural conservation program is prom ised by officials of the AAA in the western region and at Washington. The latest move in speeding up the program is the calling to Washing ton of representative farmers and extension men from all parts of the United States to assist in final con sideration of the many suggestions made at community, county and re gional meetings held throughout the United States last October. Oregon delegates to this confer ence are N. E. Dodd of Baker, who is a member of the state commit tee In charge of the program, and Wm. L. Teutsch, assistance county agent leader. Mr. Teutsch went to Washington directly from a region al county planning conference in Salt Lake City. His work at the na tional capital Is expected to con tinue until about December 1. A 1937 program which will more nearly lit the desires and needs of the farmers themselves than was possible to develop in the hurried atmosphere from which the 1936 program came is the desire of all those concerned, says George E. Farrell, director of the western re gion. He says that the suggestions made by Oregon representatives af ter the local meetings in this state have In varying degrees been In cluded in recommendations from other states. As many of these will be Incorporated as practicable. The outstanding proposal made e'ahankggtPtttg &a ifoar." Sigtia (Sirs, gurkral s v : v- y ?.. If this is done every farm will have a max imum benefit payment set, which may be earned by the farmer thru following one or more of a num ber of approved soil building prac tices. This would eliminate much misunderstanding on the part of the growers, would do away with a large percentage of the paper work now required, and would at the same time accomplish the major object ives of soil conservation, the Oregon officials believe. A marked record of improvement for the members as well as a definite influence on the agriculture of the community is re ported by L. E. All of the animals owned by the club members are now purebreds, and this applies to the families of the members as well, for the whole community has im proved the quality of its dairy ani mals due to the club's activities, Mr. Reynolds told Assistant County Agent L.
