UXLESS a little caution is used in
voting on the state measures,
the voter may be tricked into voting
as he does not expect to vote. This
is true on two measures, one the
so-called "Advertising Truth" bill,
and the other the "Noncompulsory
Military Training" bill.
The trick in the advertising bill is
that it isn't just exactly what it
seems. If it were a bill to compel
telling nothing but the truth in ad
vertising, this would be commend
able, if possible. It purposes, how
ever, to change the state constitu
tion so that no advertising can be
barred by statute as long as it tells
the truth. While we have no con
science against the so-called "adver
tising dentists," sponsors of the bill,
we believe the enactment of this
constitutional amendment would be
dangerous as opening the way for
advertising many quacks and nos
trums against the general public
welfare, advertisements of which
might tell the truth technically but
still be undesirable. It were better
sometimes if the "truth" were not
told.
In the second instance, that af
fecting compulsory military train
ing in the state schools, a vote for
the bill is a vote to change the pres
ent system which has substantially
increased the country's protective
forces as well as given valuable
physical training to many students
who might not have otherwise re
ceived it, while a vote against the
bill is a vote in favor of retaining
the present system. The bill is
largely being sponsored by pacifists
who believe that a weakling stands
in less danger of being attacked
than does a strong man. A poll of
students at the state college and
university has shown upwards of 80
percent in favor of the present sys'
tern and against the proposed meas
ure.
THE BOXUS PAID.
To the Editor:
In a spirit of fairness I would like
to call your attention to a number
of errors in your editorial entitled.
"A Debt Settled."
First, why should you take ex.
ception to our President saying we
nave paid the soldier s bonus?
is in fact paid, to be sure against
his principles as a good business
man, and you must admit it was a
bad move in a business way.
becond, you say our government
played a trick on the soldier when
they allowed them to borrow fifty
per cent or tneir bonus. If my
memory serves me right it was by
a very insistent American Legion
lobby in congress the bill was pass
ed. The veteran was not forced by
tne Dili to Dorrow on his bonus cer
tificate.
Third, you say that the veterans,
wnen tne cash payment bill was
passed, had the interest deducted
when the bonus was given them
This is not true. The interest on
the loans was forgiven and now the
veteran has his bonds drawing three
per cent until 1945 which is just that
much more than he would have had
if the bonus had been left as or
iginally passed.
I am an ex-soldier and know just
exactly how this matter was han
died. To my mind an editorial
writer loses his value to the com
munity entirely if he writes mis
statements either Intentionally or
otherwise.
In fairness to our administration
I wish you would set the public
right on this matter, as I am sure
it will make a vast difference in the
outcome of the election.
ELMER GRIFFITH.
Thank you, Mr. Griffith, for cor
recting an unintentional misstate
ment on government collecting In
terest on veterans' loans against
their adjusted service certificates.
Veterans were required to pay In
terest only to October 31, 1931, were
not charged interest for full time
of loans. We called Mr. Roosevelt
for in any way assuming credit for
an act he did his best to prevent
We do not view payment of sol
diers' bonus poor business In light
of other government spending
measures. Insofar as the soldier
is concerned the debt has been dis
charged; but Insofar as the tax
payer is concerned the debt is yet to
be paid.
