Official Paper for Morrow County
Think It Through.
EDITOR ALDRICH of democrat-ically-independent
Pendleton
East Oregonian has joined forces
with Wallace, Tugwell, Ezekiel, et
al, in advocating an economy of
scarcity for American agriculture.
Like other New Dealers, Editor Al
drich blames all the ills of the re
cent depression on Hoover and bases
his plea for support of the Roose
velt program on a comparison of
present-day prices with those in ef
fect in the deepest days of depres
sion. That New Deal dodge would be
fine if It were true, and it will
swing many votes among unthink
ing people. But one thing that Ed
itor Aldrich and other New Dealers
do not bring to light is the fact that
a preponderant democratic congress
sat in Washington when the low
price era was here, and that one of
the best organized political heckling
machines in history was at work to
block Hoover in every attempt to
accomplish anything worthwhile.
That was being done when real suf
fering was stalking the land.
There is no need in this campaign
to defend Hoover. He is not run
ning for president, though Editor
Aldrich, et al, would like to make
the voters think that Landon is a
second Hoover and attach to him
all the odium that one of the big
gest character assassination cam
paigns in history was successful in
hanging on to the man who, under
a democratic president, was her
alded throughout Europe as the
greatest humanitarian of the ages
when he successfully fed starving
millions of innocent war victims.
It is a noble gesture of Editor
Aldrich with one fell swoop of the
hand to blame all the depression on
Hoover, when the entire world was
thus affected. And it is logical for
the East Oregonian free-trade edi
tor to advance a theory of less pro
duction on American farms, while
at the same time advocating doing
away with the tariff so that home
markets as well as foreign may be
denied to American products.
Already under the New Deal,
America has been flooded with for
eign-grown farm products and for
eign-made goods, while there has
been a constant decrease in exports
of American farm products in al
most exact ratio of reduction of
farm production in this country,
The word "surplus" comes only
from the dictionary of New Deal
ers. It does not take into account
lost foreign and domestic markets
or the unsupplied demand to low
income workers who could not buy
at any price. Considering the known
shortage of wheat in this country
today, if the law of supply and de
mand were permitted to work on
a protected market, the growers
would be getting a much larger
price. The New Deal dodge on this
as intimated by a recently pub
lished wire from Representative
Pierce to Secretary Wallace is that
"private interests" are manipulating
the price the same sort of dema-
goguery that surrounds other New
Deal tactics. (And In reference to
this, if Representative Pierce, Sec
retary Wallace, or any other gov.
ernment official ha3 evidence that
"private interests" are manipulat
ing the grain price, these same of
ficials should be impeached for not
bringing the offenders to justice,
post haste.)
This week James N. Peek, first
AAA administrator who wag de
feated in his plans to administer
the act according to the dictate of
farm leaders and subsequently re
signed, came out in open endorse
ment of Landon and the republican
farm plank. Peek before supported
both Smith and Roosevelt. This
veteran in the battle to put across
the McNary-Haugen bill and other
measures having the endorsement
of American agriculture, said fol
lowing an interview with Landon
that the republcian nominee stands
four-square on the desires of Amer
ican agriculture. Peek is probably
the best informed man on this sub
ject in the United States.
Bandon Laid Low.
SAD news comes from Eandon
where at least eleven lives were
lost and the entire city laid in ruins
by Arc. It was an unleashed forest
fire which laid the city low, killing
the eleven known dead and how
many more that may yet be uncov
ered, a forest fire estimated to have
swept a 6000-aere area, and this only
one of many fires burning over a
wide front and threatening coast
towns all the way from Gold Beach
to Yachats. Untold damage to the
rich timber resources of the region
has resulted.
Last reports bring news of check
ing of the flames, and relief agen
cies on the Job taking care of the
distress. The Red Cross, national
guard, CCC crews and other agen
cies responded rapidly and are tak
ing care of the estimated 2000 peo-
pie made homeless by the holocaust.
The news of this terrible calam
ity is distressing. While calling for
neighbors to respond with money
and supplies to bridge the emergen
cy, it tells of a bleak future for the
once verdant and attractive coast
land. It tells of a whole city thrown
face to face with destiny.
Many families who have lost their
homes and property may never re
cover the loss. In time, the copious
rainfall of the region will again
make the burned-over areas ver
dant, and there will be opportunity
for those who survived to get a new
start. The homes and buildings
may be rebuilt, and even better than
they were before. But the'life that
was lost can never be replaced, the
wounds in the hearts of loved ones
will never completely heal.
If, as the probability supposes,
the distressing fire was of incen
diary origin, the criminal or crim
inals should be brought to quick
justice. At least there should be
left no stone unturned to determine
if possible, where the cause lies.
The coast people have taken the
blow with their chins up. They are
fighting to a man to subdue the
flames, and already plans are being
made to rebuild. They are entitled
to all the help and encouragement
possible to give them.
THE SECOND BATTLE OF THE
"LITTLE BIG HORN."
A number of years ago, General
Custer, with a handful of valiant
soldiers was attacked and annihi
lated by a band of thousands of
hostile Indians in the valley of the
Little Big Horn. About the only
difference this writer could see be
tween that conflict, and the football
game between Heppner and Pendle
ton Saturday was, that there were
probably more Indians at the ball
game.
Outnumbered about three to one
the Heppner boys fought long and
doggedly to preserve their school's
honor and to save themselves from
a crushing defeat. But as each
brave became a little weary, he was
replaced by an even better man to
push on to a more glorious victory
whereas the home boys, having so
few suba, had to endure to the bit
ter end and some of them almost
bit that end.
During the first half, while our
boys were fresh, it was a good game
and anybody's game; our boys hold
ing the score down to 6 to 0 against
them, but in the second half, time
and numbers began to foretell the
only result that could be expected.
An injury or two early in the game
placed the local boys at a decided
disadvantage. When Turner went
out with a dislocated shoulder and
had to be replaced by Frederickson,
the team's offense was materially
weakened, as well as the general
spirit of the team. Frederickson
is a game little guy, but very young
and light to face that horde of red
skins. I imagine he felt about like
General Custer did when he saw all
those tomahawks raised above him.
During the second half, things
went from bad to worse. With each
succeeding play another one of
Heppner's first team men coming
out exhausted to be replaced by a
younger, lighter, less experienced
player until the end when only a
few of the first team men were left.
Every player on the squad is de
serving of a lot of credit for game
ness and hardihood. To those men
who were injured or were forced
out by sheer exhaustion should be
given much praise for their staying
qualities, real fighting spirit and a
lot of nerve, and to those fellows
who stayed to the last whistle be
longs great credit for fighting on
and giving their very best even
when they knew their cause was
hopelessly lost.
Coach Tetz is not to be censured
in any manner for the outcome of
this game. His men were young and
inexperienced and too few in num
bers to compete with so vast a host
I do not say that Pendleton's boys
are better than our boys. They are
not. But there were too many of
them. Pendleton's coach is not to
be blamed either for the extremely
one-sided outcome, for he, realizing
Heppner's weakened condition, con
sistently pulled out his best men
and at the close of the game, his
team wag composed of second and
third string men.
I do not attempt to attach any
censure or blame to anybody for
this game, but it may be that error
was committedj when we agreed to
play Pendleton, in the first place.
Written by one of the boys who
played Pendleton In 1912 and came
back with a score of 49-0 in favor
of Pendleton.
