Official Paper for Morrow County
A Gracious Gesture.
TOMORROW, at Long Creek, will
be held a celebration of the com
pletion of the Pendleton-John Day
highway. A large crowd of Grant
county people will be in attend
ance and word has drifted out from
Pendleton that a representative
delegation will be on hand from
there.
It is presumed that this is not
an exclusive party and that people
from other sections will be wel
come. We like to flatter ourselves
that Heppner folks will be received
cordially, if any there are who take
time off to visit our Grant county
neighbor. Time was when Hepp-
ner was the chief trading point for
the territory to the south and it is
not a pleasant thought that that old
relationship is anything but friend'
ly today.
Doubtless a few of our citizens
will drive over tomorrow and frat
ernize with the good people of Long
Creek and Grant county. It is just
as well to keep alive that friend
ship which has prevailed for many
years, and although Heppner is
slightly handicapped by road con
nection with that section, let it be
known that the spirit of friendship
is as warm as ever and felicitate
them upon their good fortune in
securing this modern contact with
the outside markets.
Some trade, perhaps much of it,
that has always come to Heppner
from the John Day section will be
diverted to Pendleton. This is to
be expected and while this city will
feel the loss keenly, nothing will be
gained by exhibiting an attitude of
sour grapes. A good loser is like
wise a good winner. This is Hepp
ner's opportunity to prove herself
a good sport
Think For Yourself
THE coming weeks are important
A ones for the American people.
Many issues of broad political and
economic importance to all of us
will be discussed from various part
isan angles. The newspapers, the
magazines, even the very, air will be
filled with political pronouncements
which will increase in volume as
election day approaches.
For America faces a close race for
the presidency with the result ap
parently a toss up. Because of this
situation it is more important now
than at any time in the last four
years for every American to under
stand the issues of the campaign
and the position of the candidates
on those issues.
What shall we do?
Let us accept only facts disre
garding any efforts to becloud the
issues with a flood of words. Let
us turn the full force of public
scorn upon him who indulges in
mud-slinging. Let us beware of
political tricks to arouse class con
sciousness or appeal to minorities.
Simple rules but important. If
we follow them we can cut through
pretense to the real issues. Then and
only then can we appraise the can
didates upon whom we are being
asked to vote.
Only when there is an Informed
electorate unswayed by sentiment
or by honeyed words can we reap
the fullest benefits from the De
mocracy under which we live. Tour
vote is Just exactly as important as
the vote of anybody else in this
country. Treasure that privilege.
Do your own thinking.
Rodeo time is just one week re
moved. There are a lot of weeds
on vacant lots that would make
a beautiful bonfire, and their re
moval would give the town a bet
ter appearance. It is not too late
to clear some of these properties
and Heppner would look more
dressed up for the annual show.
"Let not him who is houseless
pull down the house of another,
but let him work diligently and
build one for himself, thus by ex
ample assuring that his own shall
be safe from violence when built."
Abraham Lincoln.
"He who would exchange liberty
for temporary security is not wor
thy of either liberty or security."
Benjamin Franklin.

There's a lot of "up-the-sleeve'
laughing being done in Washing
ton these hot days. It s all because
of humorous angles of the bitter
feud between President Willian
Green of the American Federation
of Labor and John L. Lewis, pres
ident of the United Mine Workers.
One of the biggest laughs was
given to newspapermen at a Na
tional Press clu luncheon at which
Green promised to resign if that
would ease labor's troubles any.
Working himself up to a heated
oratorical climax, Green said that
the men who wanted all employes
in the Lewis type of industrial in
stead of the Green type of craft un
ions were only a minority of the A.
F. of L. Then he added:
" The A. F. of L. has, by majority
rule, rejected the proposal of this
opposing organization within its
ranks.
"Shall the A. F. of L. continue its
democratic policy of majority rule
The only alternative is rule by
force, the law of the jungle, the
survival of the fittest.
"AND NO OGANIZATION CAN
LIVE BY MINORITY RULE!"
At its most boastful moments the
A. F. of L. never claimed more than
3,500,000 members out of the 130,
000,000 people in the country, or the
nearly 40,000,000 workers.
The newspaper boys laughed be
cause nobody has tried any harder
than William Green to dictate the
laws Congress passes, or to at
tempt to speak for all workers. He
must think that what would ruin
his organization would save the
country.
Lewis provided a second laugh,
He, you remember, made extremely
belittling remarks about the Con
stitution when the NRA and the
Guffey Coal Act and other laws
were invalidated. He even went
so far as to imply that he thought
folks ought to forget about the
Constitution.
Now, though, he says that the
A. F. of L. executive council is for
getting all about its own constitu
tion; that Buch attempts to kick
him and his fellow members out
are in direct violation of the A. F.
of L. constitution.
A fresh gob of trouble is brewing
in Professor Tuewell's Resettlempnt
Administration. It may result in a
remodeling of the whole RA ma
chine.
When RA started its project up
at iientstown. N..J.. it wa estim
ated that the buildings there should
cost not more than an avira nf
$4,500 a unit and might cost as
nttie as $3,500.
Just a few daya back, thoueh.
the finance division trot nrnnnH in
making a check and discovered that
uniess tnere was a drastic change,
the cost would be $10,000 unit
No one individual seems to be re
sponsible, but Dr. Tugwell and his
boys are trying hard to get the
mess straie-htened out before the
public starts raising hob.
ine Higntstown project, inciden
tally, already has been the scene of
one big fiasco. Anxious to say tha'
mey were tne only federal agency
which actually had put families into
government-built houses xinra lass
some RA officials loaded a bunch of
New Yorkers into trucks and took
them to Hightstown. When they
got there, they stayed overnight
and were hauled back because their
new homes were seven miles from
the nearest stores, and thev hH
no means of transportation either
ii mem or to tneir city jobs. Even
the railroad suur hadn't Kn r,
in.
