Morrow County Loses.
IN another column is printed a
communication to the editor from
a Lone Rock resident calling atten
tion to the deplorable condition, of
what is commonly known here as
the Heppner-Condon road. Because
of the road being in ill repair, says
the communicant, all contact with
Heppner has been severad. It is
asked that a "cat", be put to work
to dig out a real road.
The Condon road has long had
the attention of the county court
and action on the part of that body
was several times thwarted by de
mand of more populous districts
that the money be spent elsewhere.
It has been a hard job for the
court to keep up with the demand
for roads with the money available
the last few years, and it should
not toe unduly criticized for not
doing more for the Condon road.
The court has expressed itself fav
orably on this road and will act
when money is available.
Morrow county realizes that it Is
losing by not having the Condon
road in better shape. It is an im
portant artery and will not be for
gotten. BOARDMAN

WAXTS ROAD FIXED.
To the Editor:
I just wonder if there is a road
in Morrow county that has been put
in the discard as has the Lone Rock
road the road from the ridge near
Eight Mile P. O. down through
Harshman's, thence up Rock creek
to Buttermilk canyon? At present
the road from the Gilliam county
line to the ridge is almost impass
able when dry, and after a rain
means a 105 mile trip unless you
want to take chances on going to
the bottom of the canyon. The dis
tance over this road to Heppner
from the Gilliam county line would
be about 30 miles possibly 12 miles
of bad road. As the road has been
neglected for years, with just a
few rocks raked and a scratching
on the Harshman hill, it is now
very dangerous. There are cul
verts broken, high centers, cave
ins, slides, loose rocks, badger
holes, and very sidling and narrow
places. Many complaints have been
made, consequently all wool and
freight ceased to come to Heppner
any more. We would like the "cat
to dig out a road. It would take
care of itself again for the next 20
years perhaps, and believe the peo
ple in this vicinity are entitled to
the work. Due to these conditions
all contact with Heppner has been
severed.
A LONE ROCK RESIDENT.
OSC Unmasks Habits of
Strawberry Root Pests
Strawberry root- weevils, those
Insidious pests of one of Oregon's
most valuable berry crops, have
long been the subject of intensive
research by the entomologists of
the Oregon State college experiment
station. After hunting down the
weevils in their hiding places, cat
aloging the six species found to be
active in Oregon, and learning all
about their life habits, the ento
mologists have now published the
results of their research in the form
of two bulletins just off the press.
Of chief current interest to Ore
gon growers is a brief illustrated
bulletin designated as Station Cir
cular 115, "Strawberry Root-Weevil
Control in Oregon," by Dr. Don C.
Mote. It explains the method of
mixing and applying the poison
baits which have been found most
practical in the control of these
pests.
The time of application for the
most common species in most parts
of Oregon is about the middle of
the harvest season, the exact time
depending on local conditions. In
some sections two applications are
necessary for the control of the
common weevil the first one com'
ing about the middle of May or
when the berries are in full bloom.
Bait for the native species, which
include the decorated, Lacomb and
western strawberry root weevils, is
applied earlier, usually about April
1 when the adults are actively
feeding on foliage.
The comprehensive results of the
research have been published in the
form of a 110-page station bulletin
No. 330, entitled, "The Root-Wee.
vil Injurious to Strawberries In
Oregon," by J. Wilcox, Don C. Mote
and Leroy Childs. This is believed
to be the most complete report on
the subject now In print, and con
tains, in addition to the reports on
the extensive research carried on
in Oregon, a bibliography of 225
references to other published ma
terial on these pests.
Cultural practices have been an
important aid in the control of the
pests, although in recent years the
use of poison baits of two types,
one using apple waste and the other
bran as a base, have become the
standard method of control.
