I7HEN telegraphic news came
''shortly after noon Saturday of
the school band's winnnig the class
D division at the state band con
test in Corvallis, a celebration was
staged second only to that held
when news was received of coming
in of the first artesian well. At
least that is the comparison made
bv one businessman.
Joy did reign supreme. One tele
gram recipient went up Main street
waving the epistle and shouting tne
irood news. Two ladies were heard
shouting the tidings across the
street to each other. Telephones
buzzed. Heppner's boys and girls
had led their field.
Our citizens are justly proud of
the showing the band made, and the
band members and their director
are enttiled to much thanks and
credit for bringing recognition to
the city. It was an accomplishment
of which all may be proud.
The laurels are not empty. They
were well earned. The competition
was keen in a field of nine bands,
Neither were the laurels gaind by
mere good fortune or luck. Band
members and director have toiled
hard outside of school hours to at
tain the perfection which brought
them the recognition. Winning tne
contest might be said to be merely
a natural sequence of the hours and
hours of practice and drill which
were undergone to prepare for the
contest There is, nevertheless,
great satisfaction in knowing that
those hours were rewarded.
It is fitting that citizens of the
community tender the band the
banquet and reception being staged
this evening. The members and ai
rector should be told the city's ap
preciation in no uncertain terms,
And it is to be hoped that the oc
casion will act as stimulus to the
boys and girls for further effort, re
minding them that in this as in all
things, work well done brings its
own reward.
Good music, like good literature,
is a vehicle for expression of the
higher intellect It contributes to
the cultural life of the community,
and brings happiness. It satisfies
craving of the soul, and its attain
ment crowds man's baser nature
into the background. Thus is good
music, like that made by the school
band, a contributing influence for
the better in the community.
Battle the Beetles.
EXTERMINATION of Heppner'
'-'many shade trees of the elm
species is imminent if immediate
steps are not taken to kill the bee'
ties with which they have become
infested. This fact has caused the
city budgeteers to set aside an
amount for spraying all trees in the
citv. And with time for the work
at hand, the city council has made
preparations for a spraying cam
paign in which it is hoped to spray
every elm tree in the city.
No cost to taxpayers will be made
other than the individual's share
of the city tax levied for the pur
pose. However, the city dads are
asking that all elm tree owners co
operate to the extent of topping
their trees out to a height not to
exceed 25 feet
Based on experience of campaign
elsewhere, it is expected that the
campaign will result in complete
eradication of the elm tree pest and
save the many beautiful and neces-
sary trees of the species within the
city.
Thre Is no need to emphasize the
importance of shade trees to the
city in the summertime. Ihe vig
llance and wise action of the city
dads in safeguarding the trees
to be commended. Everyone should
cooperate readly.
