Official Paper for Morrow County
When the Dust Blows.
THIS week farmers of north Mor
A row county have been strongly
reminded of the need of soil ero
sion control. Devastating winds
have swept many fields of the north
country, virtually taking the grain
out by the roots. Aside from the
discomfort and inconveneince oc
casioned folks of the section, the
actual property loss has been large.
Fighting ill-humored Nature is
one of the large tasks that con
front the man on the soil, and It is
not always a pleasant one. It takes
grit and determination to with
stand the ordeal, and those who
have gone through years of the bat
tle are entitled to much credit
That the battle no longer need to
be fought blindly is accredited to
the lessons learned by past exper
ience, which have been studied and
deductions for proper procedure
made 'by specialists maintained at
public expense.
The specialists are recommend
ing a new type of cultivation for
the lighter lands in the north coun
try, and already many farmers are
following the recommendations.
The best method of controlling
blows, the specialists say, is to
plow for summerfallow with disc
plows, which leaves as much of the
stubble and other trash as possible
on top of the ground. The rougher
surface naturally tends to resist
blowing, and where the practice has
been followed it has been found
that yields were not decreased, but
in many instances were increased.
There is need for cooperatve ef
fort in the north section to stop the
blows. It is lamentable that neg
ligence on the part of one farmer
may severely injure his neighbor,
for a blow once started keeps going
until it has run its course or is put
under control.
One group of farmers in the
north section have already banded
themselves together for mutual
protection against blows. It would
be wise if other groups in affected
areas would do the same thing. If
the problem of soil blows can be
solved, it will be a great relief to
those in affected areas as well as
act as a stimulus to agriculture in
the county generally. It is surely
something to think about as the
dust blows.
Those who heard the school band
play at the benefit Saturday eve
ning are enthusiastic over the im
provement shown in the last year.
High hopes are held for the show
ing the bandsters will make in the
state competition at Corvallis this
week end. Certain it is, the well
wishes of the community go with
them, and they will still have the
community with them when they
get back even though they may not
come out on top. The band is one
of the best advertisements of Hepp
ner as a progressive community, as
well as a deep satisfaction. May
we say to Mr. Buhman and his
boys and girls. Godspeed.
It seems hardly becoming for a
newspaper editor to be personal in
his printed remarks. But with the
good grace and patience of kind
readers begged, your editor is go
ing to let down the bars of ethics
long enough to express his appre
ciation, as well as that of Mrs.
Crawford, for the many felicita
tions and acts of kindness tendered
us in our short marital career. We
deeply appreciate all that has been
done to launch us happily upon the
sea of matrimony.
