May They Come Again.
HEPPNER -was fortunate to have
the district 13, class B high
school basketball tournament play
ed here last week end. It wag an
outstanding sports event participat
ed in by schools from 13 counties.
Staging of the event here made
Heppner the focal center of atten
tion of sportslovers of the district.
That local patronage of the event
fell far short of what might be ex-
pected for such an event is to be
lamented. It will probably reflect
unfavorably upon this citys' being
chosen as tournament host in the
future. Sub-district tournaments
were reported to have been better
attended, and had it not been for
subsidies taken from these, amount'
ing to some $180, the tournament
here would have fallen far short of
paying expenses. Aa it was it just
about broke even.
The tournament itself was no dis
appointment to those who attended.
The brand of basketball displayed
was of high caliber. All the teams
showed the result of good coaching.
Good sportsmanship was displayed
on every hand.
Very noticeable is the progress
ively better brand of basketball
played in the smaller schools of the
district, due largely to better coach
ing, improved officialing and gen
erially increased interest abetted
by tournament play.
Members of the visiting teams
were a clean bunch of youths, re
fleeting the type of character that
sportsmanship as learned in hard
competition builds. It is to be hoped
that they enjoyed Heppner's hos
pitality and that they will want to
come again.
Europe a Powder Keg.
DEMILITARIZATION of the
Rhine by Germany this week
marked finis to the last unbroken
stipulation of the treaty of Ver
sailles, as well as junking the Lo
carno pact In effect the act was
an open violation of diplomatic re-
lations between Germany and
France, The world, agog, has
looked askance whether war be
imminent
Informed observers say war will
not come soon. Germany for the
moment has made her coup. The
other countries do not have the
means of financing a war, and be
sides France and England have an
other interest bothering them on
the Mediterranean.
Now as poilu and Fritz look at
each other through rifle sights
across the Rhine, and airplanes rec
onnoiter back and forth, diplomats
of the nations involved have re
tired to London to attempt new
pacts to preserve peace.
Germany would come back into
the League of Nations on her own
terms. And Italy has been given a
way to be relieved of economic
sanctions threatened by the League,
Europe for the moment is a pow
der keg. The slightest spark might
start the conflagration to again set
the world on nre.
Uncle Sam, with pockets filled
with IOU's from the last war, seems
safely aloof. But how many times
he will stand busting in the nose
before going into action remains to
be seen, in case the fireworks are
set off.
"M. V. " Building Use Observed
Corvallis. Completion of seven
years use of the big Memorial Un
ion building on the Oregon State
college campus was observed last
week end with members of the gov
erning boards of the Union holding
open nouse" and meeting with
members of the state board of high
er education which was on the cam
pus for a regular session March 8
and 9. The building, now the cen
ter of student, faculty and alumni
( activities, was built as a memorial
to OSC men who served in the
World war. It was financed with
out state money. The student daily,
The Barometer, issued a special
edition featuring the double event
of the first regular meeting of the
state board on the campus and th
Memorial Union celebration.
