Is It Worth It?
ONE local merchant remarked the
other day that most of the bus
iness men in Heppner probably
know each other too well. They
have become so intimate with each
other's faults and virtues through
years of dealing with each other
that they appear to have lost their
perspective. He believed the town
to be suffering from lack of coop
erative effort among them.
It is an old, old story, that of
loyalty to home institutions. Yet,
it is ever true. Portland's big store
or the mail order houses pay no
taxes in Morrow county. The dol
lar spent at home rolls around
home longer, to stimulate life.
growth and progress, reflecting
benefits in improved living condi
tions, helping to obtain for Hepp
ner and Morrow county those add
ed educational and recreational fa
cilities which people of the larger
cities enjoy, and that to a large de
gree because of the trade dollars
going from the smaller towns to
the larger centers.
Loyalty to home institutions
should start with the biisiness and
professional men of Heppner. If
they can realize the advantages to
be gained from helping each other
the spirit will soon be reflected in
more attractive stores and a more
attractive town to draw the trade
of the territory to which Heppner
is legitimately entitled.
- But the merchant who sits back
and does nothing except crab at
the other fellow for not doing any
thing is doing nothing to help him
self or the city. He is merely help
ing to break the backs of both.
Two sides exist to the trade at
home theory, however. And the
angle of Mr. Average Purchaser
cannot be denied. He has taxes to
pay as well as the merchant, and
he believes that wherever he can
save a dollar on his purchases that
dollar is as good in his own pocket,
to help pay his own taxes, as it is
in the merchant's pocket Mr. Av
erage Purchaser does not deny the
right of the merchant to make a
legitimate profit And, all things
being equal, he prefers to trade with
the home merchant, who is friend
and neighbor.
These are but truisms, whether
we like them or not The problem
is largely for each individual mer
chant to solve for himself. He is
operating in an ever more compli
cated economic structure. Condi
tions are ever changing. Outside
competition becomes ever more
pressing, tending to draw the life
blood more and more from the
smaller communities.
The statement of the one mer
chant that the business men of
Heppner are too well acquainted
with each other may not be true.
It apears there is an advantage in
this very fact if their close per
sonal relationships were put to co
operative purpose for each other's
benefit
There is, however, no denying
the large volume of trade dollars
rolling out of Heppner"s trade ter
ritory, which, if spent here would
reflect betterment and attractive
ness of our own community. That
volume is becoming greater instead
of less. A greater spirit of loyalty
might reverse the pendulum's swing.
A Defeatist Philosophy.
HENRY FORD does not believe
in a defeatist philosophy.
Neither do any other of the tycoons
of industry whose very success is
measured by their ability to over
come obstacles, to make a way
where there appears to be no way.
New Dealers would lead us to
believe that we have reached the
limit of human intelligence. Rugged
individualism, they say, is a thing
of the past The way of the future
must be the way of regimentation,
of government paternalism. They
preach the defeatist philosophy to
which older civlizations have be
come enslaved and which is wreck
ing them with decay.
Henry Ford pioneered the way in
making automobiles available to
people of moderate means. He and
other visionaries foresaw the possi
bilities which have become actual
ities in putting the automotive in
dustry among the leading indus
tries of the nation. Their vision
opened a new era, an era of faster
and more pleasurable horseless
transportation, with a maze of
hard-surfaced highways leading to
the remotest corners of the coun
try: an era that provided jobs where
none existed before, that enlarged
the scope of individual opportunity.
It is ever so in every era of de
velopment Individuals pioneer the
way. Salaried government em
ployees contribute little. Fulton
invented the steamboat His vision
is reflected in the floating palaces
which ply tho ocean waves. Wright
Bothers opened the way for man
to conquer the air on wings, and
today aviation is the most promis
ing field for aspiring individual
talent.
The defeatists teil us that with
the settling of the West the last
frontier has been conquered, that
we of the United States must now
accommodate ourselves to what we
have. That is true so far as virgin
territory is concerned. But there
are ever new frontiers in industry,
in art, and all fields of human en
deavor. Self-sacrificing individ
uals will pioneer those frontiers,
and as each is conquered other
frontiers will appear on the hori
zon. It takes rugged individualism
to brave the trials of progress.
Boondoggling politicians, defeated
before they start, will not get far.
Some defeatists will say we can't
all be geniuses. Edison answered
that when he said genius is two
percent inspiration and 98 percent
perspiration.
"Aid slighted truth, with thy per
suasive strain
Teach erring man to spurn the rage
of gain;
Teach him that states of native
strength possest
Tho' very poor, may still be very
blest;
That trade's proud empire hastes
to swift decay,
As ocean sweeps the labour'd mole
away;
While self dependent power can
time defy,
As rocks resist the billows and the
sky."
Goldsmith's "The Deserted Vil
lage A robin was seen drinking from
a pool of snow water yesterday.
That's a harbinger of spring. An
other is the increasing buzz of po
litical bees.
That venturesome sealion which
made its way up the Willamette
was a good press agent
