Bonds for Water.
THE council has set Saturday,
February 15, as the date for hold
ing the special election to vote on
issuance of $7000 general obligation
bonds for improvement of the wa
ter system. All legally qualified
citizens of the city may vote wheth
er or not they are taxpayers.
Issuance of the bonds is sanc
tioned by the mayor and council as
an economical way of obtaining
needed improvements, for by issu
ing the $7000 in bonds the city re
ceives an additional $5727 from
PWA as' an outright grant
Most of the money will be used
to replace 1 miles of old wooden
pipe in the lead main with new
steel pipe, continuing the work of
last year when lVt miles of the
wooden pipe was so replaced. The
wood pipe has already outlived its
allotted time when installed, and it
is only good business to replace it
before it gives too much trouble.
The work of improvement will pro
vide jobs for a considerable crew
The city must have water. The
bonds should be voted.
An Eccentric Old
Gentleman
GREATER furore was probably
never caused by an unobstrusive
citizen obtruding himself upon the
focal center of public attention
than in the instance of Dr. John F.
Condon, intermediary in the Lind
bergh kidnapping case. His true
story, sensationally featured by a
national weekly magazine, avow
edly tells of a conscientious attempt
to restore the stolen child to the
parents, at risk of life if need be,
and with no thought of compensa
tion other than seeing the smile
restored to the mother's lips.
Yet, one wonders what induced
"Jafsie," the kind hearted professor-intermediary,
to let his story
be so sensationally featured at a
time when its revelations could be
used to forestall justice upon the
man he condemns, and while he
absents himself to a foreign land.
The story contains indictment of
journalistic practices of newspa
pers; at the same time, its very
presentation at this time circum
vents all laws of journalistic de
cency. Little wonder the Lindbergh
family has sought refuge in Eng
land. It is withal regrettable that jour
nalistic prostitution has been prac
ticed upon the crime that rended
more hearts than any crime in the
annals of history. It is further re
grettable that such prostitution has
tended to defeat the aims of jus
tice. To many minds,- Hauptman's
implication to the extent of being
in possession of a considerable
quantity of the marked money an
indisputable part of the evidence
is enough to make him eligible for
extreme measures of punishment.
If the soulful vein of Jafsie's story

should ring true, Jafsie should
have given his best efforts toward
seeing justice through to the finish.
The people of the United States
want to see the Lindbergh case
cleared up and the guilty parties
properly punished. A lesser result
will be taken as further inability
of the government to safeguard
the innocent and defenseless. Jaf
sie and Governor Hoffman will be
tolerated only so long as their mo
tives seem sincere.
Jafsie's story smacks strongly of
his having fallen victim to commer
cialized sensationalism. It is to be
hoped he may be yet, as he prefers
to view himself, just an eccentric
old gentleman.
Now Walter Pierce comes forth
with House Joint resolution 471 pro
posing an amendment to the con
stitution that would give congress
the right to legislate without su
preme court passing judgment on
it's acts, "to promote the economic
welfare of the United States." May
be the people would favor that if it
included a provision for obliterat
ing rubber stamps. Does eastern
Oregon representative trust one
man's judgment more than that of
nine men whose position was
gained through their understand
ing of the basic principles of law.
Postal receipts totaling $631,567 in
1935 set an all-time record for
Greensboro, N. C New Deal filler
in East Oregonian. If New Dealer
inflationists aren't curbed, the
Greensboro figure won't hold a can
dle to postal receipts at Squaw's
Crossing.
Mr. Groundhog saw his shadow
Sunday. He shivered; ducked back
into his hole for six weeks more
slumber, and winter continues.
"In regard to the Morrow county
checker players that were men
tioned in the Gazette Times last
week, it is to ocomical for words,"
says another checker fan, Stanley
Minor. "Especially John Wight
man and C. J. D. Bauman," he says.
"Even a bum checker player like
me can keep them from getting on
first base."
