ADVERTISING RATES GIVEN ON APPLICATION trying to get two men to go out to work with sheep at a time when Heppner and other towns in the county were well supplied with peo ple receiving relief, but he could get no help. The contractor also told of his experiences, quite simi lar, in getting help out of employ ment offices. They were agreed that those who continued to try to produce were paying dearly for the New Deal. "Why," the . local man said, "we're paying for the loafers' help without getting any help." e e That appears to be preyy strong language. But it's one side of the argument when everyone is asking for social security. It would be .mighty fine if we could all eat our cake and have it, too. "VNE feels just a little alarm when he hears a man who for years been been one of the county's sub stantial citizens and a contributor toward its upbuilding by helping manage a large livestock company say that he has about reached the point where he is ready to come to town and live off the government Ever mounting taxes and the in creasing number of government beneficiaries makes the production game too discouraging, he says. This man's statement brings up the point of what would happen if all producers took the same view of things. If all the farmers in the country took a notion to quit the farm and move to town, there would be no government, for government can exist only with sustenance, and without the products of the farm there would be no sustenance. Not only would the farmers be out of luck in living off the government, but so would that very large and ever increasing class that is now "making slaves of producers," as this man put it "Talk about free ing negro slaves! Why the negroes weren't in it with the farmers of today when it comes to being held in bondage," was the rather alarm ing assertion of this farm manager analyst This man, if not sixty, is proba bly nearing that age. He might retire and give his job to a younger man if the Townsend plan were put into effect However, his job is not now paying any fancy salary. What could a younger man in the same position expect to make, if this man with millions of others were to be given $200 a month each by the gov ernment, throwing that much addi tional load onto the producers of the country. Instead of lightening the younger mans burden, the ex tra amount would add to it e e e Another man, a contractor from a neighboring state, entered the conversation when he heard the lo cal man say that too many people today don't want to work. The lo cal man had had the experience of BOARDMAN By RACHEL J. BARLOW A small crowd was present at the last Parent-Teachers meeting when the election of officers was held.
