As the World Moves.
MUSSOLINI'S euns are opening
1V1
on Aguwa in the domain of
Haile Selassie . The League of Na
tions sets a new yardstick in his
tory, dubbing Mussolini's move a
war of aggression and proclaiming
in favor of economic boycott against
him ... Detroit's Tigers win their
first World Series pennant in 29
years of major league baseball ..
Governor Martin calls the special
legislative session for October 21
to provide for constructing Oregon's
new capitol building ... Roosevelt,
Robinson, Borah, Hoover sound
opening guns of 1936 presidential
campaign ... Congressman Pierce
hails Townsendism as movement
striking at root of capitalism," en
dorsing its program ...
And so the world news brings a
picture of political, social and econ
omic unrest, of human hopes ac
complished, and of human aims
toward accomplishment
Life's struggle goes on. Each
passing moment brings new prob
lems, each a fresh battle to try the
mettle. The calm and serene ocean
is nettled by a breeze, increasing
shortly to a gale, rolling high the
breakers; and the weaker craft mav
not survive the call to Davy Jones'
locker.
Life is action. Life is conflict
The mighty ocean may not resist
the blasting gales. Lashing tongues
of flame lay low towering heads of
stately forest monarchs. Rushing
waters crumple stalwart masonry,
The rocking earth lays low majestic
skyscrapers.
Dormancy vs. action. Unleashed,
the elements become a foe to man,
Fetter them and they are his friend.
But whatever the course, the ener
gy is but transferred into another
channel. It is not destroyed, and
a new generation may seek it out
again, mayhap to redirect its action.
What is news today becomes his
tory tomorrow And still the ele
mental laws of nature are at work.
Man, with all hisi wisdom, knows
but to try, and if he errs, to try
again. And ever do the fittest sur
vive. Heppner receives the resignation
of Mayor Smead with regret. He
took an earnest interest in the gov
ernmental affairs of the city. He
attempted to contribute to its bet
terment through inaugurating a
program of street and water system
improvement, some of which was
accomplished. His desire was to
leave Heppner a little better place
than it was when he found it That
his full desires might not be real
ized is regrettable. But he is en
titled to the citys' gratitude. We
wish him Godspeed.
Our high school has a scrappy
football team, doing its best to
carry the glory of Heppner through
ranks of opponents. It is entitled
to the city's support. Let's give
them a boost when they play Her
miston here tomorrow.
BOARDMAN
By RACHEL J. BARLOW
A large number of out of town
grangers as well as local grangers
attended Pomona grange here at
the Greenfield grange hall Satur

church basement for the grangers.
The Boardman school was closed

Gunshot Wounds
There are no more nasty and de
ceptive wounds of the human be
ing than gunshot wounds of the liv-
The assassin usually hits his
victim in a prominent part of the
body. The professional gunman
may shoot through the head or the
heart, but the crazy amateur killer
usually shoots lower down. At least
I have noticed that in my experi
ence in such unfortunate cases.
I once saw a perfect Hercules of
a young man shot by a small pisol
just to the right of the stomach.
The ball passed through the mar
gin of the liver. The bullet did not
go through as it was a cheap variety
of gun. Within three days the vic
tim was using his pillow for a foot
ball and wanting to get up and
dress. People laughed about the
trivial wound in one so strong. It
had scarcely disabled him.
innocculation he had last Wednes
day. Mavis Strum was brought home
Sunday morning from the Pendle
ton hospital where she was serious
ly ill for the past week. She is
greatly improved at this time.
Mr. and Mrs. Lynne Ranney and
daughter Phyllis moved to town
last week from Messner and are
living in the Murchie house. Mr.
Ranney is helping at the Gorham
store.
Mr. and Mrs. H. B. Thomas and
children and J. Litchman were din
ner guests Saturday evening at the
E. T. Messenger home.
Schnetzer brothers have opened
a broom factory in the old Broyles
building. The machinery is in
stalled and the work has started.
The brooms are being made from
broom corn grown on this project
and are of a good grade. The
Schnetzer brothers have been in the
broom business for a number of
years and expect to have a perma
nent factory here.
J. Litchman, returned missionary
from Africa, gave a very interest
ing lecture and showed pictures of
his missionary work at the commu
nity church Saturday when a large
crowd enjoyed the evening. He also
spoke at church Sunday morning
and at the school auditorium Tues
day afternoon. Mr. Litchman has
been in the African field since 1917,
and returned to the United States a
year ago. He expects to go back to
Africa soon. He was a guest at the
home of Mr. and Mrs. H. B. Thom
as during his stay here. Mr. Litch
man and Mr. Thomas attended
school together.

In less than ten days he was dead!
It took that period of time for the
liver-wound to begin to "slough" in
the path of the bullet. Surgery is
helpless in these cases. I have never
seen a gun-shot wound of the liver
get well. All die in about the same
number of days.
Mayor Cermak of Chicago was
reported shot through the liver.
Within three or four days he was
reportd doing fine, no shock, no ser
ious alterations of temperature or
respiration. The doctors were
watching for pneumonia. Newspa
per reports were all favorable.
From my experience I could not
but see a dark outlook. I told my
friends Mayor Cermak wouldn't
live fifteen days, If he had been
hit in the liver.
Older citizens will recall the as
sassination of President McKinley.
I predicted his death within an hour
after the fatal ball struck. Liver
tissue is unlike any other.
