Bridal Flower of Sharon
Wa Palestine'. Favorite
Apart from the well-known Greek
myth, there la a beautiful and very
Interesting legend which grew up
In Palestine In ancient times around
that fragrant and still-loved flower,
the polyanthus, or "bunch-flowered
narcissus."
The flower was exceedingly pop
ular In ancient Palestine, where,
says a writer In the Montreal Her
ald, It was to be found In every
house, large supplies being sent
as gifts to the rulers of Damascus
and other foreign countries. From
Palestine it passed to Europe,
where It Is cultivated today for its
rich perfume.
In Biblical times this plant grew
wild on the famous Plain of Sharon,
which stretched along the sea coast.
And here Is the significance of Its
Identification as the "Rose of
Sharon," that it was closely related
to the nuptial ceremonies of Pales
tine. The narcissus bloomed at Sharon
as the symbol of eternal love. Based
on that legend, the narcissus be
came the bridal flower of Hebrew
maidens, the emblem of pure and
eternal devotion. At all marriage
feasts It wag prominent, and its per
fume was described by one of the
rabbis as "the link that binds the
mortal and Immortal loves." In the
earliest Hebrew marriage festivals
two blooms of narcissus were set
before the bride and bridegroom as
symbols of the beauty of their marriage.
Can Fry Egg on Stone in
Hot South African Town
We are accustomed to think of
the Equator as the hottest place In
the world, but we are wrong, de
clares a writer In Tlt-Rlts Maga
zine. Much warmer places exist
both north and south of that trop
ical belt. In Massawah, a town with
4,000 Inhabitants In Eritrea, an
Italian colony in Africa, you can
actually fry an egg on a stone in
the sun, as the mercury often
reaches 120 degrees F. In the shade.
The air, too, Is humid, and the aver
age temperature for the year is 80.4
degrees F.
In January, the coldest month,
the average dally maximum temper
ature Is 84.!)!), while the average
dally minimum temperature Is 72.5.
which means a dully average of 78.7
degrees F, In July, the average
dally maximum temperature Is 103
degrees and the average daily mini
mum 87.8 degrees, or a dally aver
age of 93.4 degrees F.
Massawah Is the chlef seaport
of Eritrea. It Is situated on Massa
wah bay and built on several Is
lands and the neighboring mainland.
The largest of these islands Is 23
feet above sea level and about
half a mile long by about a quarter
of a mile wide.
The Snake's "Spring"
Respecting the length of a snake's
stroke the United states biological
survey has this to say: "The Idea
that a snake can strike Its full
length or even a greater distance Is
a popular but erroneous belief.
When a snake strikes from Its usual
S-shaped curved position, the an
terior half of the body which Is
thrown forward must be free from
coll. In striking the snake simply
straightens out the S-shnped curves.
It does not have to be In this posi
tion, for observation has shown that
when Irritated most of our poison
ous snakes can strike from almost
any position for short distances.
The greatest length' of stroke Is
about three-fourths the length of
the snake."

Oldest Tax Abolished
Running contrary to trends In
taxation throughout the world, Irak
has abolished a tax. It Is one of
the oldest taxes known. It Is the
Khurva, which from time Immemo
rial has been levied on every trav
eler about to cross the desert of
Mesopotamia, and the payment of It
Insured a safe journey, as the
meney was distributed among the
nomadic tribes of the region.
The City of Victoria
The city of Victoria was founded
as a fort by the Hudson's Bny com
pany, being first called Fort Albert
after Queen Victoria's royal con
sort, the name, however, being al
most immediately changed to Vic
toria In honor of the queen then
reigning, in 1852. Prior to the erec
tion of the Hudson's Bay fort, the
Indians knew the present site of
Victoria as Caniosun or Camosack.
Motor Highway in Egypt
With the completion of the new
$10,000,000 highway between Cairo,
Egypt, Jerusalem, travelers
can make the Journey between the
two cities In less than 40 hours,
