Farrell Promises Second
Wheat Contract by July
Wheatgrowers of the nation voted
85 per cent or approximately 6 to
In favor of continuance of the AAA
wheat control program, according
to official tabulations released from
Washington. This is almost exactly
the majority by which the plan car
ried in Oregon in the recent refer
endum. With this overwhelming mandate
from the growers the administration
will offer new contracts in the near
future, probably by July 1, George
E. Farrell, chief of the wheat sec
tion has announced. These con
tracts are understood to run for
four years with provisions for with
drawal earlier if desired.
The official tabulation of Oregon's
vote made by the state college ex
tension service shows that 5271 con
tract signers voted to continue the
plan while 840 voted against it.
Among wheat growers not now
holding contracts 76 voted yes and
14 no.
Overwhelming approval of the
wheat plan was voted in the nine
Columbia basin wheat counties.
There the count stood 3395 yes to
only 210 no, making a 94 per cent
favorable vote. Wheeler county had
a unanimously favorable vote, and
Gilliam and Morrow had only six
and eight regative ballots compared
with 287 and 385 favorable respect
ively. The Umatilla vote was 956
to 39.
The 10 Willamette valley coun
ties, despite the fact that wheat
growing is more or less of a side is
sue, voted 74 per cent favorable.
Irrigated counties cast an 80 per
cent favorable vote.
Any general stimulation of cattle
production will bring disastrous
price reaction by 1937 predicted
Harry Petrie, chief of the AAA cat
tle and sheep section in an address
to the annual Oregon Cattle and
Horse Raisers association inEnter
prise. The cattle business is in a
healthy condition now and can con
tinue so if growers will avoid over
expansion, he said. Meat prices are
not high compared with the 1929
level, but the industrty must take
cognizance of consumer reactions
to price advances, he added.

OSC Campus Ready for
Large Summer Influx
An active summer of work on
the Oregon State college campus is
scheduled with the opening of the
annual 4-H club summer session on
June 10, to be followed two weeks
later by the regular adult summer
session June 24. Approximately
1000 Oregon boys and girls are ex

early indications are that the regu

tration than for the past several
years.
"Summer study in a vacation set
ting," long the slogan of the Oregon
State summer session, expresses a
situation that always brings stu
dents from many distant states to
do summer work at Oregon's insti
tutions. The addition of many sum
mer courses in the school of science
at O. S. C. hag greatly broadened
the available offerings.
Major interest also is centered
around courses in the school of
home economics, emphasizing child
development, parent education and
family relationships, under the lead
ership of Dr. William E. Blatz, di
rector of St. George's School for
Child Study at the University of
Toronto, Canada, well-known auth
