benefits to the strikers, in the ulti
mate it is detrimental to them.
Labor is entitled to its fruits, and
should those fruits be sufficient to
provide a living wage, then labor
is entitled to a living wage. But if
labor's demands exceed the fruits
to which it is entitled, then those
demands become a depressant upon
the Industry, and if carried to ex
tremes, actually dry up the life
blood on which labor depends for
existence.
There is always a sound economic
basis for settling labor disputes. It
is always possible to strike a happy
medium.

Official Paper for Morrow County
Will Rogers helped immortalize
the country editor in "Life Begins
at 40," but his unfamiliarity with a
printer's stick was evident One
just can't set type holding a stick
like that Will said a mouthful
when he opined, "A newspaper
should tell the truth at least some
times."
Another Vision Realized
IT IS hoped the middle of June will
1 see the last of the rock surfacing
placed on the last remaining gap of
the Heppner-Spray road, marking
completion of the vision of the late
Robert J. Carsner, George BieaK
man and others who pioneered the
work of bringing the road into be
ing.
The occasion is worthy of celebra.
tion bv Morrow and Wheeler coun
ties as has been suggested by S. E.
Notson, district attorney, and mem'
bers of the county court A holiday
should be declared with all the
folks of the region joining in a pic
nic at one of the many available
spots of beauty along the route.
Attainment of the Heppner-Spray
road is another step of civilization
in its march westward, aiding in
the development of a vast new em
pire destined to be the scene of the
world's next great development
Passing through one of the most
valuable stands of ponderosa pine
timber extant so far practically un
touched, the road promises to bring
immediate development to this great
resource. It also serves as another
avenue of access to the mineral,
farming, scenic and sporting treas
ures of the interior Blue mountains
and the John Day valley, at the
same time bringing the people of
these regions into closer contact
with the outside world.
Thus as a route of local import
ance, the Heppner - Spray road
should be fittingly celebrated. But
Its importance is yet more far
reaching. It serves as a link in a
chain of highways to provide a cut
off for interstate travel, and as such
should have attention of the federal
government in bringing it up to the
standard of interstate federally-endowed
highways.
The route serves to make a direct
connection at Heppner with the
Wallula cut-off into western Wash
ington via Umatilla, Butter creek,
the Lexington-Jarmon market road
and the Oregon-Washington high
way, and at Spray with the John
Day highway and on into Califor
nia via the Ochoco and The Dalles
California highways. This is the
most direct route between Walla
Walla and Bend. It also provides
the shortest route between Pendle
ton and Bend via the Oregon-Washington
highway.
In celebrating completion of the
road at this time, its importance as
an interstate highway should not
be overlooked, and more effort
should be expended in getting fed
eral recognition and placement up
on the Bureau of Public Roads map.
Give Us the Bridge.
THE county court has asked the1
state highway commission for
gift of the old steel bridge removed
at the Rugg place on Rhea creek
to make way for the new bridge un
der construction there. The bridge
asked for was originally paid for
and put in place by Morrow county,
and the court now has a place to use
it elsewhere. The commission, how
ever, has asked the county to pay
$100 for it The $100 presumably
would be to compensate the state in
a measure for its removal. But the
county court cannot see where the
state has any use for the structure,
and believes the county is entitled
to it as a gift The sum seems a
small amount to quibble over. Why
not give us the bridge and be done
with it?
A Happy Medium.
IT NEVER pays to go to extremes.
That's an old axiom which may
be applied with profit to all affairs
of life.
Right now it may be applied by
all classes of people in the inaus
trial world, and especially is it rec
ommended to the laborer.
Eastern Oregon has few labor
disputes because employer and em
ployees are, and always have been
sympathetic with each other's in
terests. But the wide open spaces
of this section breed a depth of un
derstanding which appears not to be
reflected in the more congested dis
tricts. Eastern Oregon, however, is In
terested in labor disputes elsewhere.
Those labor disputes cause less de
mand for our products and result in
higher prices for commodities we
must buy.
When men stop working, they
stop producing. And when they
stop producing, fewer people are
permitted the use of their products.
In turn those who have stopped
producing have nothing with which
to purchase the products of those
who are still producing, and the
products which remain in produc
tion accumulate, causing surpluses
to depress the market The cycle
works a vicious hardship all along
the line and instead of reflecting
