Official Paper for Morrow County
MEMBER.
The New Postoffice.
HEPPNER has become aroused to
the need for and possibility of
obtaining a new postofflce. Letters
from many prominent citizens are
being sent this week to congress
men and representatives, setting
forth the case in its behalf.
That Heppner is in the eligibility
class of offices with $5000 or more
receipts is shown by figures quot
ed by Charles B. Cox, postmaster,
for the last five years, as follows:
1930 J8.588.53
1931 $8,017.25
1932 $6,508.10
1933 $7,261.57
1934 $7,909.21
With the fact etablished that
Heppner needs, and is entitled to a
new postoffice, there remains the
question of how extensive a build
ing should be provided to house It
In building for the purpose it is
only logical that the government
should provide for other activities
carried on here, including the for
est service and department of agri
culture work. These activities take
in the Umatilla National forest of
fice and the office of county agent,
the latter being headquarters for
all agricultural control work.
At the present time the govern
ment pays rentals totaling $150 a
month for these activities. This
amount would pay interest at 4 per
cent on a $37,500 building. Present
upkeep expense of the offices would
probably take care of other over
head expense of a new building.
From the showing it is therefore
logical to ask for a building cost
ing between $30,000 and $40,000,
Such an expendtiure is within the
realm of business economy for the
government and would be a wel
come asset to our little city.
Hope for the Future.
THIS evening our community looks
with hopeful eyes upon the fine
class of high school graduates. They
are viewed as the hope of tomorrow,
those boys and girls who have ap
plied their talents in obtaining the
basic knowledge entitling them to
their high school diplomas.
They have reached commence
ment, the time when they must
shortly choose a field of service to
their fellow men. Mayhap the seed
of their destiny has already been
sowed. Few reach this important
time as free agents. Heredity and
environment have already influ
enced their lives to a large degree.
It is for them individually to take
stock of hia wares and take them
to the market place.
All have germinating within them
seed which, with proper cultivation,
will produce rich fruit It would
be well if all might have advantage
of higher educational facilities to
enrich the culture of these seeds.
Each succeeding class steps from
the portals of school to face a more
complicated, a more enlightened
world. Hence the task of each In
adding to the sum total of human
knowledge and progress becomes a
little harder.
But to each succeeding class re
mains the task of analyzing the
world as they find it, and with the
tools at hand to build a little higher.
That they will so build is the hope
of those who bid them God speed
at commencement time.
