Official Paper for Morrow County
MEMBER
Redistricting Good Idea.
REPRESENTATIVE SEMON of
Klamath county has introduced
a bill to make a separate senatorial
district of Klamath county and
placing Morrow county in the 18th
senatorial district with Wheeler,
Gilliam and Sherman counties.
Morrow is now in the 19th district
with Umatilla and Union. Its pres
ent situation is unfavorable in that
the two counties to the east have
heavy population majorities whose
interests are not closely linked with
the interests of this county. Not
since Morrow county has been In
the present district has it had - a
look-in on a senatorial post.
Before the last gerrymandering,
this county was combined with
Grant and Harney counties. Un
der that set-up two men from this
county were sent to the senate, the
late J. W. Morrow and the late
Henry Blackman, both of whom
represented the district creditably.
Shifting economic interests have
given Morrow county more in com
mon with its neighbor counties to
the west Inclusion with them in
the same senatorial district is not
inept, in fact it is quite logical. Not
only in similarity of interests, but
in a more favorable population bal
ance would this county be benefit
ted. There would again be some
chance of obtaining recognition for
a worthy Morrow county man.
As for Klamath county, it is con
siderable of an empire in itself,
worthy of separate senatorial rec
ognition. At present it is unfavor
ably situated in a district with Lake,
Deschutes, Crook and Jefferson
counties, the largest district in the
state and all too unwieldy from
geographic and economic angles,
On a population basis, Semon's
proposed redistricting would make
for equalization as well. Morrow,
with Gilliam, Sherman and Wheel
er, would have a population of 14,
185. Umatilla and Union together
have a population of 41,891. Crook,
Deschutes and Jefferson total 20,
376, while Klamath alone has 32,407.
In all fairness to Morrow and
Klamath counties this redistricting
proposal should find ready adoption,
and interesting pictures go to make
up the eight pages of this tabloid
supplement to the Heppner news
paper. The printing and typography are
exceptionally attractive and the
delicate gray-blue stock upon which
it is printed is particularly attrac
tive. No doubt hundreds of the
souvenir copies will be tucked away
in the memory chests of the conven
tion visitors and will be a frequent
reminder down through the years
