IJEPPNER is accorded a signal opportunity in the meeting of the 38th annual Oregon Wool Grow era' convention next Monday and Tuesday. That opportunity is for the expression of its appreciation to one of the two large industries on which its existence is founded the sheep industry. 'Heppner was originally founded as a livestock trading center. The then bunchgrass covered hills sur- rounding the little valley where Henry Heppner and J. L,. Morrow established the first trading post, later to be known as Heppner, pro vided the sustenance for the intro duction and growth, first of cattle raising, then of shep raising. It was not until several years after the country round-about had been well stocked with cattle and sheep. that cultivation of the land began, The livestock industry first made a trading post at Heppner possible, and livestock, with sheep predom inating in later years, has contnb uted largely to the Heppner of to day. While wheat raising plays an almost equal part in the economic life of Heppner today, the city's prosperity has been based on the prosperity of its sorrounding in dustries; and largely the city has fared as the sheep industry has fared for better or for worse. Of recent years there have been reverses In the sheep industry which have been reflected in the business life of our little city. But through the reverses, it is probable that the town and the sheepmen have been brought closer together. Each has probably been given a deeper appreciation of the common bonds of mankind. But in its downs, as well as its ups, the sheep industry has con tributed to the welfare of Heppner and its-people. It has continued to be a mainstay to trade life of the community. Therefore, the oppor- tunity for the city to show appre ciation of this fact should not be passed by lightly. There should be hale and whole-hearted welcome accorded all visiting sheepmen, and well-a-day when their state asso ciation may meet here again. A privilege and an honor has been bestowed upon Heppnei- the de serving of which will be told by our people next Monday and Tuesday. NOTICE OF STOCKHOLDERS' MEETING. Notice is hereby given that the annual meeting of the stockholders of Heppner Mining Company will be held in the courthouse at Hepp ner, Oregon, on Tuesday, Feb. 12, 1935, at 2:30 o'clock in the afternoon of said day. The meeting is for the purpose of election of officers and for the transaction of such other business as may appear. D. B. STALTER, President J. O. HAGER, Secretary. NOTICE OF SHERIFF'S SALE.
