Happy New Year.
NINETEEN THIRTY-FIVE ar
rives next Tuesday. He prom
ises to be a healthy young babe,
normal in many respects, and all
eyes are upon him with the hope
that he will carry still farther the
epirit of peace, good will and happi
ness which prevails this Christmas
season.
Hearts are filled with desires to
contribute much to the life of the
new arrival, that he may have a
better chance to go places and do
things than have any of his pred
ecessors. Especially are the people
of Morrow county ready to play the
role of fond parents to the young
stripling. Many high resolves will
be made in solemn penitance for
mistakes of the past Human frail
ties may wreck many of these, but
as the life story of the new babe is
unfolded, the good intentions of an
enlightened people will keep the
new year on a steady course; and as
his history is told, the good will
again outweigh the bad in the bal
ance.
The deepest wish of the Gazette
Times is that each succeeding is
sue of the new year might bring
naught but pleasure and happiness
to all its readers; that nothing
might be recorded but items relat
ing to the peace, progress and hap
piness of the people of Morrow
county. But the impossibility of
the wish is foreshadowed by the
knowledge that life is not like that
Lessons of the past teach us that
life is largely made up of conflict
and that character is largely build'
ed by fighting the many battles
which life presents to the individ
ual, to the group, and to the nation,
One of the fundamental laws of
biology teaches us that animals
learn through trial and error. Man
is raised above the animals through
the power of reason. But to reason
logically and soundly, one must al
ways be right in his premises. Only
the wisest of men are possessed of
pure knowledge, and it remains for
the average man to feel his course
much after the fashion of the am
mals, guided, as he may have been
privileged, by the lessons of the
past the composite of which repre
sents the acquired civilization on
which largely are based the chances
of 1935.
But prospects for 1935 would be
poor, indeed, if they were permit
ted to rest solely on these. Another
higher faculty has been given unto
man to which one may look with
the greatest of hope his imagin
ation, from which is derived the
power to create.
The sound application of this fac
ulty, as applied in planning for the
new year, will bring forth the new
ideas in many fields of human
knowledge which will give 1935 its
true place in history for the con
tributions it will have made to the
civilization from which it drew.
The highest resolve, then, of the
Gazette Times, is to be true to the
Hearing babe; and as its wisdom
permits, to keep uppermost that
-which is best for the field it serves
always with the wish that 1935 may
Indeed be a happy and prosperous
new year for everyone.

Cards Flow Freely
In Baby Registration
Portland, Dec. 26. C hristmas
week sees a volume of Register-Your-Baby
cards flowing back here
from Washington, D. C. Efforts of
the State Board of Health, the Cen
sus Bureau and the State Emer
gency Relief Administration, which
opened a short campaign December
6, are now concentrating on seeing
that the parents of every baby less
than a year old have a card and
mail it
"In order to reach Oregon's pos
sible total of about 15,000 returns in
this campaign, every parent who is
eligible must sign a card and drop
it into the mail," said Dr. Frederick
D. Strieker, secretary of the Board.
"This is important for the future
of each baby and all babies.
"The campaign, like many other
projects carried out at this time,
is salvaging some labor that would
otherwise be Idle and using it to do
something useful to society. In the
particular case of this campaign,
we are trying to reform a condition
In which it has been found that all
over the United States only a part
of the births which occur are of
ficially recorded. As nearly as we
can estimate, Oregon runs about
90 percent
"The campaigns which are being
put on in the various states are In
tended to bring this up to 100 per
cent. Signing and mailing a card
not only insures that YOUR baby
has a birth certificate, but also will
enable us to check the operation of
our routine system during the past
year."
Any one who wants a card or
cards will obtain lt Immediately by
writing a postal card to the State
Board of Health, 816 Oregon Build
ing, Portand.
