EXCEPTIONALLY fine response of the community to the plans laid by the Boy Scout executive committee was shown by the at tendance at the Fathers' and Sons' banquet Tuesday evening, and in the memberships obtained for the Boy Scout Booster club. Such a display of cooperation presages a live scout organization in Heppner for some time to come, reaping the benefits which naturally accrue to the community. One banquet speaker termed the money spent for Boy Scouts "Social Insurance," believing the invest ment as such to be well worth while without taking into consideration the material benefits received by the boys participating. Statistics show that few Boy Scouts have ever appeared on charges in juvenile courts. By their time being taken up with construe tive enterprise, Boy Scouts have neither the time nor inclination to engage in destructive enterprises. Where the boy left to his own re sources is more likely than not to get into devilment, the one enrolled in the Boy Scouts becomes an asset rather than a liability to the com munity. The 17 members of the local ex ecutive committee are to be com mended on bringing the Boy Scouts of Heppner" on a sound footing. They have expended much of their own time, money and effort to bring this about in the face of seemingly insurmountable obstacles. And their accomplishment is not an empty realization of mercenary values, as may be seen from the fine repre sentation of thorough-going scouts enrolled under the local troop ban ner. The Boy Scouts of Heppner are a fine lot of boys, deserving the support of everyone. Their con tribution to the community has been, and will continue to be worth much more than can be measured in terms of dollars and cents. concrete next week.
