Official Paper for Morrow County
After the Election.
THERE was probably more real
rejoicing over the defeat of Up
ton Sinclair for governor of Cali
fornia than in any other single
feature of the nation-wide voting
last Tuesday. The race of Sinclair
was watched with interest every
where as it signified the outstand
ing fight for a drastically different
form of government from that
which is now in vogue the country
over. That California was unwill
ing to support Sinclair's proposed
experiment showed a predominance
of sound thinking in that state, and
that the news was acclaimed with
general rejoicing is indicative that
the nation as a whole is not yet
ready to depart from those princi
ples which have made the United
States the most enlightened, most
prosperous nation on the face of
the globe.
That the nation as a whole gave
President Roosevelt the greatest
support any president has had since
the time of Washington is not
alarming to this newspaper. It will
give the president free rein for the
next two years in working out the
program already adopted. So far
the president has shown little in
clination to deviate from tested
governmental procedure in using
the unlimited powers entrusted to
him. In following that course he
has gained the confidence of the
American people, as so largely re
fleeted in Tuesday's election. That
the government's huge spending
campaign also had a large effect
in the voting would be hard to de
ny. When the time comes for
tightening the government purse
strings, as it inevitably will, there
will probably be a different reaction
Those who see in the New Deal's
victory an easy livelihood for them
selves for the next two years thru
government paternalism are likely
to be disappointed. Already indi
cations are shown that gratuitous
government gifts are slackening.
Such prosperity as will be had for
the next two years will come large
ly through the application of the
efforts of each and every individual
throughout the nation, just aa it
has in the past.
The result of Tuesday's election
is encouraging, in that it shows
general confidence in the govern
ment Such confidence is essential
for people to have faith in the fu
ture returns from their capital and
and from their labor. It is to be
hoped that the wise application of
both capital and labor will bring
about a greater degree of general
prosperity than has yet been exper
ienced in the New Deal.

tion to winter seed wheat, rye or
