POLITICS are thickening the air more and more as time for the general election on November 6 draws near. One black gnat after another is joining the swarming maze of varmints whose buzz be comes more and more confusing to the electorate. In such a maze it may be difficult for Mr. Average Voter to keep a clear head and to scratch his ballot intelligently at the polls. At such a time there are a few basic rules of politics and politicians to remember. L Remember that politics (with out the odium which politicians nave cast upon the name) is purely the science of government 2. Remember that political par ties are organizations intended to advance fundamental principles of government. 3. Remember that a politician is one who twists the principles of government to the desires of the people in making campaign pledges which are rarely, if ever, thought of again until the next election rolls around. 4. Remember that the "ins" al ways want to stay in, and the "outs" always want to get in. There may be other basic rules, but these are sufficient unto the end. We wot not that any student of present day politics will admit them. It is lamentabe there no longer exist any strong political parties. True there are still staunch advo cates of Jeffersonian Democracy and Lincolnian Republicanism, but those who call themselves Demo crats and those who call themselves Republicans are far from being agreed on original principles. "Planned Economy," a strange new principle has appeared upon the scene to receive acclaim from members of both old parties. This principle is the adopted orphan by the party in power. It came to fill the breech in a national emergency, and beleagured people of all par ties, some through loyalty, others through desperation, hailed it as their saviour. Because the Democratic party adopted this strange waif, those Democrats who have been benefit ted by its nurture claim the crea ture as the party's own and they would continue to suckle the gov ernment teat by inveigling Repub lican votes to place Democrats into office as being the only champions of the "New Deal." But this "New Deal" has strange bedfellows. Republican votes were responsible for bringing it into be ing under Democratic sponsorship. The while Democrats who first re ceived the waif with open arms are denying blood relationship. . . . The first NRA failed; a new NRA is in the making. The New Deal proved the fallacy of direct relief; an entirely new relief program is being drawn up. . . . The New Deal is like unto the classic country doc tor: Try something; if it fails, try ONLY 15 NOW FOR QUICK-ACTING BAYER ASPIRIN! BOXES POOCH TIMS Of 12 HOW 15 PAY NO MOKE NOW Pay Less and Get So as to put the reliability and quick action of Genuine Bayer Aspirin within the reach of everyone, the price you pay has now been reduced. Reduced so low that nobody need ever again accept another brand in place of real BAYER ASPIRIN to save a few cents. 15c now for tins of 12 tablets. 25c now for bottles of 24 tablets. And the big, family size, 100 tablet bottles again rcducedl These new low prices are now m effect throughout the United States. ALWAYS SAY "BAYER ASPIRIN" NOW WHEN YOU BUY something else, but try something; the patient must be treated. . . . The Democrats condemned the Hoo ver administration for the coun try's budget being unbalanced by $2 billion. Now it is unbalanced by many times that amount, and still no remedy has been found to cure the patient. Is it any wonder the waif has strange and ever changing bed fellows? Walter Lippmann, noted journal ist, was one of President Roose velt's staunchest supporters in the last presidential campaign. It mat ters not whether his talents were purchased by the party's campaign committee. In the current issue of the "American" magazine, he gives a lucid analysis of the trend of the; New Deal as it should be. He says the loose powers given the Presi dent by the last Congress, which had the effect of instilling con fidence in the people of the nation at the time, are now delaying re covery because of the uncentainty in the minds of the people as to how these powers may be used. It is time, he says, for Congress to take back unto itself the law making powers delegated to it by the Constitution. Lippmann's analysis is reason able to anyone who understands the plight of the nation today. There is no reason for electing "rubber stamps" to fill representa tive positions, or either the gover nor's chair in Oregon. With James A. Farley, one of the biggest political bosses in the history of the United States, hand ing out Democratic party patron age from Washington and giving instructions that Democrats be giv en preference in all the recovery program jobs, even down to com mon laborers, how many Republi cans are going to be soups enough to vote all the jobs to the Demo crats? Oh yes, there's one more basic rule in this political game; Remem ber that anyone who is spending very much of his time and-or mon ey to boost some candidate or mea sure, has some personal axe to grind somewhere he isn't doing it all for the "dear public." Proposed Amendment to the State Constitution In November the citizens of the State of Oregon will vote on an amendment to the State Constitu tion that will limit taxes on real property to 20 mills in 1936. Should this amendment be ap proved by the voters, the state of Oregon will be required to do with one million dollars what it has hitherto needed five million to do. The proposed amendment has two objectives: 1, relief to property owners, and 2, to enforce economy by denying funds for gevernmental activities. Real property is over burdened by taxation and some oth er means of raising revenue should be found. Our counties now have insufficient funds to care for the poor, the aged, and the unemployed. City and town expenditures are largely for police and fire protec tion. The 20-mill limitation would greatly reduce the available funds for these agencies. The schools throughout the state would have reduced their operating expenses to the minimum. Shall we vote for this proposed amendment and jeopardize the ed ucational opportunities of the youth of Oregon or shall we vote against the amendment and thus force property owners to continue to car ry the heavy burden of taxation? School boys and girls should do OF 12 Real BAYER Aspirin! So Always Say "Bayer" When You Buy These new low prices make it un necessary now to accept unknown aspirin tablets to save money. So see that you get the real Bayer article now by never asking for it by the name "aspirin" alone, when you buy; but always say B-A-Y-E-R Aspirin, and see that you get it. Remember, scientists rate it among the fastest known reliefs for headaches, and the pains of rheu matism, neuritis and neuralgia. DRUG STORES some thinking on these important questions for it will be only a short time until they are called upon to cast their ballots one way or the other and before that time they should be able to make decisions that are for the benefit of the greater number of people. A general assembly was held last Friday. It included a program by Benzine Ring and a short initiation of Lawrence Wehmeyer, who was absent during the recent initiation. Lawrence was given a "spat" by the sophomore boys and then took the oath administered by President Perlberg. In the Benzine Ring pro gram Ed Dick called our attention to a few scientific discoveries of the month and Raymond Drake told us why we should study science. "Professor" Perlberg and "Ma dame" Wilson presented a mystic performance. James Driscoll and Arleta Ash baugh were selected to be initiated into the Benzine Ring next Thurs day evening. Friday morning at 10:00 o'clock an assembly was held for the girls. Miss Brownson gave a talk on intro ductions, telling how to meet all oc casions without embarrassment. Frances Rugg and Jean Adkins brought up the subject of a Girls League. This league, which would include the Home Economics club and the etiquette class, was dis cussed by the girls. Paul McCarty, freshman presi dent, managed his class very well Friday night while painting numer als. He kept all the class together, and stayed by the numerals so the other classes couldn't destroy them. P. S. Paul has proved himself equally efficient in his valiant tho somewhat fruitless efforts to re move said numerals. Grade School News Kenneth Schunk of the first grade has returned to school after being out with a broken arm. The second and third grades are beginning to make decorations for Hallowe'en.
