p.ext Saturday, October 20, Hepp-
ner meets Lexington on the Lexing
ton home field. The teams are un
evenly matched, Heppner having
the stronger team of the two. How
ever, the Lexington team is not to
be bluffed out, and the outcome may
ery easily be an upset. As many
people as possible are urged to at
tend the game, as Lexington is also
holding Pioneers' Reunion that day.
Gym Work
The four recently elected cap
tains of the girls' gym teams are
Juanita Morgan, Ethyl Hughes,
Arleta Ashbaugh and Genevieve
Hanna. Mr. Winter is teaching
fencing to the four girls who earn
ed letters in gym last year. These
girls, Lorena Wilson, Jennie Swen-
dig, Ethyl Hughes and Juanita
Morgan, will later teach other girls
who are interested in fencing.

THE words of the Doet are com'
l mended to those who are circu
lating copies of a letter addressed
to the editor of the Heppner Ga
zette Times and signed by one Floyd
A. Rowell. In the letter are what
are purported to be facts concern
ing misdeeds of certain public of
ficials and institutions of Morrow
county.
Had this letter not contained
statements of a libelous nature for
which this newspaper has no sub
stantiating proof, it might have
been published by its supposedly in
tended addressee ere this. How-
ever, the self-seeking methods of
the communicant revealed by his
own statements were so apparent
as to cause this pewspaper to deny
it the dignity of publication.
It must be said for the benefit of
those who may have the impression
that the copies were made and are
being circulated by this newspaper
that such is absolutely not the case,
This newspaper gives support to
nothing it cannot print in its own
columns.
This newspaper holds no brief for
any public official who may be dis
honest or shirking his duties in of'
flee. Neither is it fighting a battle
of vindication for any stranger who
comes into our midst. Nor is it
desirous of establishing any alibis
for its own actions in the past.
There is a sane and logical course
to follow in all things. As a civil
ized nation, we of the United States
have adopted the principle that ev
ery man is innocent until proved
guilty before a court of peers. We,
of this country, have believed it un
fair to convict any man until he
has had his day in court.
The Man of Galilee was crucified
by a mad rabble. What did Pontius
Pilate gain by giving the Saviour
to the mob which led to the cru
cifixion on Calvary?
This man Rowell assumes the at
tributes of a Pontius Pilate. He
would take the law unto himself,
and after inciting the mob would
turn the accused over to them for
crucifixion. He alone has heard
and tried the case on which he has
caused to be issued recall petitions.
He has no patience with those who
admit a higher power than himself.
We, of Morrow county, have been
neighbors and friends too long to
be guided by assertions of a strang
er in dealing with each other. We
know many of the weaknesses and
frailties of each other, such weak
nesses and frailties as are com
mon in mankind. We also have
learned that any reform is accom
plished but slowly, and that through
the process of education not revo
lution. When old neighbors and friends
are accused of misdeeds, we should
move slowly in giving credence.
At all times should we be vigilant
in the affairs of government Con
stant vigilance would assist in cor
recting flaws in our governmental
system. Oft' times an indictment
against an individual is more an in
dictment against the system which
permits misdeeds of which the in
dividual is accused.
Again we say, as in the editorial
to which Mr. Rowell took exception,
any "sound-thinking" person will
think twice before abetting a move
ment which tends to pit neighbor
against neighbor.

The call of the wild caused sev'
eral male students of Heppner high
to be absent Monday. This was be
cause the game bird season has
opened. This is very unfortunate
for these hunters because Mr. Bloom
said they would receive a flunk for
the week, which will make them in
eligible for the Heppner-Lexington
game Friday.
Several high school students have
been absent during the past week
because of flu. This was especially
noticed at the Heppner-Athena
game Friday when Jimmie Driscoll
and Raymond Drake, two members
of the first team, were unable to
play. Don Drake, also of the first
team, was out of the Heppner-Pen-dleton
game for the same reason,
Paul McCarty, assistant football
manger, journeyed to Portland Fri
day afternoon to take in the foot
ball game between the University
of Oregon and the University of
Washington, which Washington
won, 16-6.
Steven Wehmeyer, a Heppner boy
who has been working in the CCC
camp at Camp Boulder, Winthrop,
Wash., has returned and started to
school Monday.
Grade School News
A Columbus Day program was
held last week by the grade school.
They plan to give assemblies each
month for the purpose of group
singing. A playlet was given by
the third grade and was followed by
a reading by Clara Bell Adams.
They were also favored by a skit
given by the seventh grade. Sing
ing of patriotic songs concluded
the program.
Mr. Buhman Is organizing a be

next week. They already have eight

soon. About thirteen members
from the beginners' band were put
in the junior band to fill some vacancies.

Irish Defeat Athena
Heppner's Fighting Irish defeated
Athena 7-0 on the local field last
Friday In the fourth game of the
year. The game went scoreless in
to the third quarter when Munkers,
Irish safety, received an Athena
punt on his own 35-yard line and
returned the punt 65 yards down
the sidelines for a touchdown and
victory. Munkers also converted,
making the score 7-0 which re

His Platform Summarizes:
UNEMPLOYMENT I unqualifiedly pledge my earnest ef
fort to solve the scourge of unemployment. A willing
man's right to a job Is a basic humanitarian principle.
AGRICULTURE Oregon's department of agriculture must
be further developed to render immediate and greater ser
vice to farmers. This condition Is serious. Prices can and
mnst be improved and stabilized.
OLD AGE PENSION 1 pledge my support of an old age
pension system that provides a reward for good citizenship
and not charity. A new method of taxation must be found
to relieve homes and farms from this tax.
LABOR I will support the minimum wage law, protection
of women workers, limitation of hours, the workmen's com
pensation act and healthful working conditions, and an ad
equate system of unemployment insurance to which labor
and industry jointly contribute.
TAX REDUCTION Tax reduction is vital to
recovery in Oregon. Rigid economy in expense
of government is necessary for tax relief. Strict
supervision of tax-spending activities and plac
ing more departments on a self-supporting
basis are imperative.
BALANCED BUDGETS I advocate a "pay as
you go" policy and I pledge myself to the prin
ciple of a balanced budget.
PUBLIC UTILITIES I believe in strict regu-
lation of utilities and the sales of their secur-T
ities to investors.
EDUCATION Oregon must maintain its splen
did system of education. It is the guarantee
of our future progress and stability of govern
ment. DAIRYING New markets, adequate profit
margins, stable prices are important to the
dairyman and I pledge my efforts along these
lines.
FISH AND GAME Administration of Oregon's
great fish and game resources should be re
moved from political manipulation.
BONNEVILLE POWER This project Is under
the complete control of the Federal Govern
ment, according to the President. I pledge co
operation. I oppose state bond issues on this
Federal project to further burden our tax
payers. PUBLIC WORKS If Oregon is to grow new
industry must come. We should encourage it.
LAW ENFORCEMENT I believe in vigorous
and fearless enforcement of law. Oppose judi
' cial procedure granting delays and easy paroles
to violators.
HIGHWAYS Present highways now author
ized by law should be completed, but I oppose
issuance of more bonds except in dire emerg
ency. VETERANS As in the past, I promise the
veterans my sympathetic support. I endorse
the stand of organized veterans against com
munism. NATURAL RESOURCES Oregon's unlimited
