Making the Surface Boom WHAT energy, ingenuity and love for the beautiful can do to en hance living surroundings may be seen at the home of Dr. A. B. Gray at the corner of Main and Balti more streets. While Dr. and Mrs. Gray do not have the only beauti ful flower garden in the city, theirs is one of especial charm and de serves notice by folks of the com munity. A dug well with installa tion of motor and pump supplies abundant water for the garden's needs an ingenious method de vised by Dr. Gray for saving on the amount he would have to pay if a like quantity of water were pur chased from the city. Dr. Gray is not alone in taking advantage of the fact that Heppner is underlaid with water quite close to the surface. Morrow County Creamery company sank a drilled well, and without going very deep obtained sufficient water to care for their washing and boiler needs; and the county court is just installing pumping equipment at the county well to the rear of the courthouse which will supply water there for irrigation and fire protection. The enterprise displayed in mak ing use of this underground water to make the surface bloom is com mendable. It makes possible some of the niceties of life that would possibly not be had if city water had to be depended upon entirely. It is to be hoped that some day the city system will have a sufficient supply of water that can be sold at a price low enough to encourage beautiflcation of premises of everyone.
