AIN'T IT A FACT?
IN THE Lewis River News of
1 Woodland, Wash., there was re
cently published a communication
in the column edited by Bologny
Gus, which contains much truth,
though it is somewhat crude and
facetious. We are prone to blame
all our troubles on the powers that
be, rather than to take home a
goodly portion to ourselves. We
give the communication of Mike
Clark as it appeared in the Wood
land paper, admitting that he states
his case well:
"Dear Mr. Editor:
"There seems to be so much talk
about our so-called Republican
prosperity, I believe it is my duty
to write my views on the same, and
to help analyze the situation as far
as possible, so's we can make up
our minds we had auto change our
ways of living, and so forth.
"I have taken my own case for
Instance. I see my mistakes and
many others have acted likewise. I
bought a Ford instead of a farm
and it's worn out, but the farm I
figured on is still O. K. I invested
in a radio instead of a cow, and the
radio gives static instead of milk.
"I am feeding five nice hounds
which answer to the names of Red
Red Wing, Slobber, Jake and Bay-
rum, instead of five pigs. I had
our piano tuned instead of having
the well cleaned out I spent all
my cash in 1928 and used my credit
in 1929 and traded up my future
wages on installments in 1930, so
hard times caught me in bad shape
last fall.
"If I had spent my last ten dol
lars for flour and meat instead of
gas and oil, I'd have been O. K. I
built a nice garage last year instead
of covering my barn, and I loafed
in a mountain two weeks instead of
being in the pasture fixing it so's
my cow won't get out, but she is
dry and mortgaged to boot for two
blankets my wife bought from an
agent instead of paying the preach

Lesson for August 14.
The Ten Commandments. II Exo
dus 20:12-21
The final six Commandments in
the Decalogue are directed toward
society, outlining man's obligation
to his fellows.
The fifth Commandment sounds
archaic in a day of severe tension
between the older and younger gen
erations. Taking unfair advantage
of their freedom, children are some
times loath to admit that there can
be any merit In the ideas of their
elders. How refreshing to turn
from flippant irreverence toward
one's parents thoughtlessly voiced
by representatives of the "younger
set," to that heartfelt veneration
of Thomas Carlyle, crying out to
his dead mother, "Oh, pious moth
er, kind, good, brave and truthful
soul as I have ever found in this
world!"
It seems unnecessary to stress the
sixth Commandment, "Thou shalt
not kill," in Church circles. Yet
while Christians very rarely delib
erately commit murder, they are
a party to those subtle forces that
exact a heavy toll in human life.
Last year thirty-four thousand per
sons were killed in the United
States by motor vehicles. Also,
think of those fated for a prema
ture death through under-nourish
ment because of unemployment Re
member, too, the victims of that
relic of barbarism, capital punish
ment. And then call to mind the
millions sacrificed on the altar of
Mars.
In this age of domestic tension
and wrecked homes, due in large
measure to unwholesome over-em
phasis upon the physical delights of
the sex relationship, the protest of
the seventh Commandment against
adultery is most welcome. We sure
ly need a new conscience concern-
ing marriage, a fresh emphasis up
on the necessity of mutual loyalty
and forbearance.
The eighth Commandment, con
demning stealing, is a reminder
that al things belong to God and
are held in trust by His children.
For one man to take more than his
rightful share of goods is to rob
God Who is no respecter of persons,
How much we need the warning
of the ninth Commandment! Per
jury, slander, back-biting, unchar
itable judgment are all too common.
It is surprising how prone we are
to "run down other folk.
The final Commandment has the
approval of our Lord, who once ex
pressed the warning, "Beware of
covetousness," and of St. Paul, who
put his finger on the source of our
present economic distress when he
said, "The love of money is the root
of all evlL"

end of my rope and the man I'm 1
working for is busted on account
of nobody wouldn't pay him and his
butterfat won t sell 'cause nobody
won't buy no butter. I had $4
saved up for a rainy day; it turned
dry and I spent the $4 for two in
ner tubes.
'I tried to make both ends meet
with a turnip patch but when I got
turnips ready to sell, everybody was
selling turnips for nothing, and the
market was glutted; I'm worried
plum to the bone and my wife's kin-
folks are coming over next Tuesday
to spend two weeks.
"Write or phone if you hear of
any relief from the government

willing to be either a Democrat or
a Republican for a few weeks if
that will help out any.

THE BONIS EXPEDITIONARY
FORCE.
WE DO not see how it was possi
ble for the Washington police
and Federal Government to take
any other actjon than that which
they took in driving the so-called
Bonus Expeditionary Force out of
the District of Columbia, From all
reports, the soldiers behaved with
great restraint and did an unpleas
ant job expeditiously and painlessly,
Here was a misguided group of
men who had been lured to Wash-
ngton by promises which could
never be fulfilled. The Government
owed them nothing. Every man of
them entitled to a bonus under the
law had received his bonus certifi
cate and had been given the oppor
tunity a year before to borrow lib
erally against it But a few reck
less members of both Houses of
Congress, evidently seeking the sol
dier vote for their own re-election,
encouraged these men and their
leaders to come to Washington and
demand the immediate payment in
full of the bonus which a grateful
nation had so generously voted to
all who served in the great war. It
was an impossible demand ad one
which every intelligent taxpayer in
the United States resented.
The authorities of the District of
Columbia were tolerant and kindly
in the extreme toward these misled
Detitioners. At the request of
President Hoover Congress appro
priated $125,000 with which to pro
vide them transportation back to
their homes. Comparatively few
took advantage of that Instead
hundreds of them remained" in
Washington, taking possession of
government property without au
thority, living in unsanitary camps
which were a public menace, and
refused to leave the government
buildings when requested to do so
by the police. Then they resisted
by force the request to get out
Since Congress had adjourned
and there was no longer the slight
est hope of accomplishing their os
tensible object we can only assume
that their leaders deliberately
sought to intimidate the Federal
Government and to create a willful
nuisance.
We cannot help feeling sorry for
the innocent dupes of those who en
couraged and led this movement,
but we are heartily in accord with
the President's declaration that the
Government of the United States
must not yield to mob rule nor tol
erate even the semblance of rebel
lion.
