TIRED of running to fires and working their heads off without apparently accomplishing anything, a group of young men of the city went before the council and asked for permission to organize them selves into a firefighting force with, the privilege of taking control of the city's fire apparatus. They said if they must fight fire they wanted to do it right The city dads welcomed the idea; told them to go to it They have yet to receive the city's sanction to the 42.50 pay which they will, ask for responding to each fire call. The monetary consideration is nothing when compared to the large savings in property that a trained firefighting force may effect The city should gladly agree to the pay ment As for the boys, they have shown a fine public spirit They are will ing to sacrifice time and money, for the slight remuneration could not fully repay them, to protect the property of others. Some of them have property of their own to protect that's true, but others have volunteered partly that the town may be made secure, and partly through the love of adven ture a motivating force in every young man's life. There have been many fires the last few months, and each time the siren's screech has sent chills up the spines of propertyholders. And while there have always been many ready and willing men on the job to combat the flames, they have worked at cross purposes with no one to take the lead and no one knowing exactly what to do. It has been left for a lick and a prayer to do the job, and no one resting easy until the last spark was out It will be a relief to know, when the siren calls, that trained men will respond. The whole city will rest easier. And everyone should be appreciative of the efforts of the boys "who want to train them selves for the purpose. Everyone should be ready and willing to give them a hand. GETTING ON THE AIR. AS THE last great era of civiliza tion has been known as the Iron Age, so will the next be known as the Air Age. We are now in its early beginnings. For communication purposes the air Is already-rarjidly replacing the wires. Wireless telegraphy and wireless telephony are common. It will be but a short time, scientists tell us. before television will be Sunday Schoo u Lesson International Sunday School Lesson for December 13 JOHN'S VISION ON PATMOS Revelation 1:4-18 Rev. Samuel D. Price, D. D. There are three schools of inter pretation for the book of Revela tion: it has been fulfilled, it will be fulfilled, or it is being fulfilled. Most of the conservative scholars follow the latter method. At least, this is positive. Revelation tells of the final triumph of Jesus Christ and His Church, and this sublime fact is a wondrous assurance in the midst of present evil conditions. Do not try to find a meaning for every symbol or relate each episode to some event in history. Rather, read the book for its message of victory and the glorious way in which it presents Christ as King of kings and Lord of lords. No mat ter how great is the Imagery of heaven, the symbol will be far less than the actual which will be ex perienced in time by the redeemed of the Lord. John, the seer, was in exile on the island of Patmos and was granted the series of apocalyptic visions: There are seven series with seven items each. Select the seven prom ises to the seven churches for cu mulative blessings that come to the faithful. Christ no longer is depicted as the Man of Nazareth In .humble garb, but as the established Lord whom none can gainsay. He moves majestically in the midst of the churches. The ocaslon was when John "was in the Spirit on the Lord's day." This sublime mani festation of Him Who was once crucified is another argument for His Immortality. The assurance Is "I am alive forever more." Such contact with God was not to cause any distress and the encouraging word is given: "Fear not" Turn now to the last chapter in Revelation and observe the heritage of the child of God. Heaven is the Home Land of the Soul. The Invi tation is to all: "Come and he that la athlrst, let him come: he that' will, let him take the water of life freely." J s niTOR. lALl equally so, with the ether waves carrying pictures around the world. Great speed has been added to communications through the air. And as commerce and travel take more and more to the airlanes, transportation will be equally revo. lutlonized. The effects will be felt in all phases of life. Every wide-awake town and ham let in the country is preparing for the day of the air by laying out landing fields. Some have been so fortunate as to. have the govern ment do it for them. Towns for merly unheard of have become na tionally and internationally known as air centers. Heppner has not been among those favored by government recog nition, and so far little has been done toward getting on the air. There is not so much as a standard air marker here to tell the aviator going over that Heppner Is on the map. When highways were being built, many flourishing little cities faded into mere country hamlets because they were passed up. Who can say that the town which ignores the im portance of the airways will soon be affected in like manner? A new era is at hand. It is time to get on the air. More money is not the need. There's plenty of money in the country, if put into circulation. That sounds reasonable. Did you know that Oegon has a new governor? Willard Marks of Albany became Oregon's governor last Monday and will preside until Governor Meier returns from Cali fornia, where he went for three weeks. Governor Marks is herald ed by the daily press as a sound executive, not likely to empty the penitentiary. Umptediddy The gunman order ed me to get on my knees and pray before he killed me.
