HISTORY REPEATS ITSELF.

"IT IS a gloomy moment in history.
1 Not for many years not in the
lifetime of most men who read this
paper has there been so much
grave and deep apprehension; nev
er has the future seemed so incal
cuable as at this time. In our own
country there is universal commer
cila prostration and panic, and
thousands of our poorest fellow-citizens
are turned out against the ap
proaching winter without employ
ment, and without the prospect of
it
"In France the political caldron
seethes and bubbles with uncertain
ty; Russia hangs, as usual, like a
cloud, dark and silent, upon the
horizon of Europe; while all the en
ergies, resources and influences of
the British Empire are sorely tried,
and are yet to be tried more sorely,
in coping with the vast and deadly
Indian insurrection, and with its
disturbed relations in China.
"It is a solemn moment, and no
man can feel an indifference (which
happily, no man pretends to feel) in
the issue of events.
"Of our own troubles no man can
see the end. They are fortunately,
as yet, merely commercial; and if
we are only to lose money, and by
painful poverty to be taught wis
dom the wisdom of honor, of faith,
of sympathy and of charity no
man need seriously to despair. And
yet the very haste to be rich, which
is the occasion of this widespread
calamity, has also tended to destroy
the moral forces with which we are
to resist and subdue the calamity."
The paragraphs quoted above
were not written yesterday, al
though they are very much the
same sort of thing that many peo
ple are saying today. They were
printed in Harper's Weekly on Oc
tober 10, 1857, seventy-four years
ago.
If in these seventy-four years
there had been no change we would
have gooti ground for pessimism
now. But everybody knows that
during most of that time this coun
try has experienced good times
steadily getting better.
What happened before will hap
pen again. From all that we can
see and hear we believe that the
worst of the present situation is
over and that conditions are on the
mend. And we are certain that the
pessimists who are still frightened
out of their wits have no more ba
sis for their gloom than did our
grandfathers in 1857.

SOMEBODY has put forward the
suggestion that October of each
year should be celebrated as Na-

A neglected church, one that is
occupied by worshippers only two
or three times a week and remains
closed the rest of the time, may
become distinctly unsanitary, if its
sexton is not alert for the welfare
of his congregation.
I am not warning my readers to
stay away from church no, not
that An amusement resort may be
ten times as malignant, where all
sorts of respiratory diseases are
present in all stages. But the the
ater operator is, as a rule, pretty
careful to keep his place In a sani
tary condition. In constant opera
tion the place is generally swept
clean, and the air changed over
and over again. I am sorry to say
that rural houses of worship are
seldom cared for as they should be.
The church where I attend regu
larly may be cited here, since I am
fond of "honest confessions." Our
sexton a young man makes his
living from more remunerative
work; the church gets him as cheap
as possible hardly more than five
dollars a week. Our indoor nooks
are always dusty, and the plunder
in choir rooms is laden with dust
The mop isn't known here; the
moist cloth, if ever used, I have not
been able to discover. Our sexton
is the lowest paid official in the
church service.
It ought to be otherwise. He
should be qualified to do expert san
itary work, and should be paid for
the work required of him. We pay
an elder about $80 a trip, to come
around every three months and
check us up morally and financially
about $320 for the four annual
visits. Our spare-time sexton would
drop dead if he were to get one dol
lar for a harder hour's work!
Sometimes a cheap janitor or sex
ton costs more in health than the
high-priced spiritual supervisor.

February, March, April, May and
June. The doughnut is good eat
ing in any of those months. We
have eaten doughnuts in July, Aug
ust and September without any
harmful effect By all means let
us celebrate the doughnut
In most parts of the country the
word doughnut means the tooth
some delicacy which was first in
troduced into America by the Dutch
settlers of New Amsterdam, who
called them "crullers." Away down
East in New England the people of
the older generation today still call
the Dutch crullers "fried cakes" to
distinguish them from the original
Yankee doughnut, which is made
from bread dough, only slightly
sweetened, and which resembles
the genuine cruller or Dutch dough
nut only in being fried in deep fat
These are the doughnuts which the
hearty Yankee pioneers used to eat
for breakfast, preferably "dunked"
in coffee. But they are not the del
icacies which most folks have in
mind when they think of dough
nuts. The genuine cruller i3 basically
different from the Yankee dough
nut. The dough from which it is
made is much shorter and sweeter,
and in its perfection is of a consist
ency which requires careful hand
ling if it is to be dropped into the
frying kettle without losing its
shape. The standard shape of the
cruller is, now, a hole surrounded
by a rim of dough, but the old
fashioned doughnut was composed
of a long strip of dough twisted
like a section of rope. Indeed, the
word doughnut is merely a perver
sion of "dough-knot" But what
ever the shape, whatever the con
sistency and quality of the ingre
dients, we say wtihout hesitation
that there is no such thing as a
bad doughnut The only thing that
can spoil a doughnut, in our opin
ion, is to sprinkle it with powdered
sugar. That makes it into a French
ified kind of confection whch is not
only un-Amercian but very difficult
to brush off the front of one s vest.

Note the two similar incidents
where a total of thirteen who had
known only the baptism of John
enter into the larger experience in
Christian truth when they know
about Him, the Holy Spirit. Paul
returned to Ephesus after having
been to Antioch that he might re
port, on the Becond missionary Jour
ney.
Three years were now spent In
Ephesus as the third Journey is en-
tered upon. After three months
the school of Tyrannus became the
general meeting place. Fine re
sults came from the two years of
preaching; and teaching at that cen
ter. In fact, many points In the
surrounding country were reached
and these places were later ad
dressed by both Paul and John in
their letters.
The bonfire at Ephesus revealed
the growing influence that Paul
gained over the superstitious who
used all sorts of charms to try and
offset evil. It was quite like the
rabbit's foot idea with some today,
and there are still many who give
up good money to have a palmist
or other fortune teller hoodwink
them. Multitudes brought their
charms and soothsaying books for
the fire and about $100,000 worth
was destroyed.
All this cut into the sale of the
images of Diana, whose massive
temple and licentious worship was
dominant In Ephesus. The makers
of these idols had their part In
starting the uproar as the people
rushed to the open temple and
shouted themselves hoarse as they
cried "Great Is Diana of the Ephe
slnns." Paul wanted to talk to the
crowd but cooler minds dissuaded
him and Paul decided to work elsewhere.

Mr. and Mrs. Rudolph Klinger
and family were at Julian Rauch's
and Henry Rauch's, Sunday evening.
Pat Curran was elected to serve
on the board of directors until June
to complete the unexpired term of
G. L. Bennett at the school meet
ing Saturday afternoon.
Mrs. B. P. Doherty went to Pen
dleton Saturday and returned Sun
day afternoon. Mr. Doherty has
not yet returned to his home in
Sand Hollow since his illness.
Bill Kilkenny and cousin, Joe Kil
kenny, were out from Heppner to
Joe's home in Sand Hollow on Fri
day.
Mrs. Lucy E. Rodgers was out
from Heppner Tuesday visiting the
Alpine school.
There was a croquet game at the
Alpine school last Friday afternoon
Vawter Crawford and T. J. Hum
phreys of Heppner were playing Irl
Clary and Alex Lindsay. Willard
Hawley was umpiring. The game
ended after about three and a half
hours of playing by the Heppner
team pegging out.
Mrs. Frank Kilkenny was In
Heppner on business Friday.
Misses Audrey and Naomi Moore
attended the carnival and dance at
lone Friday evening.
The charivari given for Mr. and
Mrs. Frank Kilkenny Tuesday
night was followed by a dance Sat
urday evening. There was a large
number present and a good time
was had. Several windows in the
different cars were covered with
soap, otherwise no Halloween
pranks were played.
Among those present at the
Heppner-Alpine croquet game were
Miss Gertrude Tichenor, Mrs. Mar
garet Peddlcord, Mrs. Marie Clary
and Miss Rosella Doherty.
Mr. and Mrs. Bert Michel and
Margaret Howard were In Heppner
on Saturday. They were present
at the school meeting at Alpine
later in the afternoon.
Miss Gertrude Tichenor with Bill
Geiger and Kenneth Geiger were
at the home of Mr. and Mrs. Bert
Michel Saturday. They were at the
Kilkenny dance later In the eve
ning. Bert Michel and Olney Sallng
went to the mountains for wood
last week.
Willard Hawley and Miss Ger
trude Tichenor were guests at the
