W. C. T. U. NOTES.
MART A. NOTSON, Reporter.
In a recent "open letter," Augus
tus 'Busch asserted that nothing
would contribute more to relieve
the unemployment situation and re
store business confidence and sta
bility than the legalizing of 4 per
cent beer. The New York Times
of July 20 published replies from
economists and educators to an in
quiry sent out by the American
Business Mens Prohibition Foun
dation as to their opinion of the
proposition. With only one or two
exceptions they declared the pro
posal unwarranted or ridiculous.
Dr. Geo. B. Cutten, President of
Colgate University, said: "Mr,
Busch's open letter is so foolish
that it seems to be unnecessary to
make any answer to it If Mr.
Busch were paying for all the beer
that would be sold that would be a
different proposition, but of course
the payment has to come from
somewhere, and that means it has
to come from the pockets of the
people; and Mr. Busch has not ex
plained how an additional tax at
the expense of the people, whicn
unfits them for efficiency, can aid
prosperity."
C. S. Marsh, Dean of the School
of Business Administration, Buffa
lo, New York, University, said:
'The statement of Mr. Busch is
typical of the hokum issued by the
advocatse of restored booze. Re
opening the breweries would, of
course, do something to relieve un
employment but his other claims
are nonsense. In European coun
tries beer has not improved busi
ness confidence and stability, and
it has never been noted for its con
tribution to public health, morals
and welfare."
William H. Spencer, Dean of the
School of Commerce and Adminis
tration, University of Chicago, said:
"It is incredible that the return of
4 per cent beer should have any ef
fect for good on the business and
economic situation."
C. E. Griffin, Dean of School of
Business Administration, Universi
ty of Michigan, said: "I believe
that a restoration of beer to its for
mer legal status would have a bad
effect upon business stability.
Whatever evils may have accom
panied the prohibition law, it is my
opinion that on the score of indus
trial efficiency the results have been
salutary. Business cannot in my
judgment be restored by the adop
tion of a measure which gives
promise of impairing business effi
ciency and reducing the purchasing
power of consumers."
In connection with these replies
it might be well to note that Gen.
Smedley Butler in an article in the
Christian Herald comes out square
ly for the retention of prohibition.
Evidently, he has not forgotten that
the brewers insisted upon using
grain, sugar and coal when the na
tion was economizing on food stuffs
and when schools and hospitals
were cold from lack of fuel in the
early days of the war. The brew
ers were slackers. Patriotism was
not in their vocabulary.
