The Home Economics club plan
ned a surprise party for Rev. V. O.
Miller's birthday last Wednesday
and they, with a number of the
Ladies Aid members, motored to
the Miller home at Umatilla. The
party was a complete surprise to
both Mr. and Mrs. Miller and was
enjoyed by all who attended. A pot
luck dinner was served at noon.
The afternoon was spent by visiting
and singing. This was the regular
Home Economics club day. Those
who were present included Rev.
and Mrs. Miller, Mesdames Porter,
I. Skoubo, Duggan, Lottie Atteber-
ry, Mitchell, Ransier, Myers, Ma
chan, Flickinger, Channing, Lilly,
Tyler, Dillabough, Warner, H. O.
Earners, and Miss Hazel Channing.
A lovely dinner was enjoyed at
the E. T. Messenger home Satur
day evening honoring the birthdays
of Rena June Messenger and Mrs.
M. K. Flickinger. Covers were laid
for Mr. and Mrs. Flickinger, Mr.
and Mrs. Truman Messenger, Rena
June, Junior and Franklin, Mrs.
Jay Cox, Dale, Irene and Jesse, Joe
Hadley, and Mr. and Mrs. E. T,
Messenger and Lois.
The high school freshman initia
tion was held Friday evening in
the school auditorium. The usual
tricks were played on the "freshies"
after which the evening was spent
in playing games and dancing. The
high school faculty and alumni
were present. On Friday the fresh
men were compelled to wear their
clothse either wrong side out or
backwards, the majority choosing
the latter way. Those in the fresh
man class are Glen Disbrough, Ed
win Compton, Fred Slanger, Mit
chel Ellis, Fred Richardson, Delbert
Machan, Zelda Carpenter, Mike
Healey, Elsie and Imogen Wilson,
Paul Mead, Elvira Jenkins, Vernon
Partlow, Allen Surface, Lucille Far
ley, and John Wigglesworth. Mem
bers of the sophomore class are
Margaret Smith, Selma Ayers, Dale
Cox, Marvin Ransier, Sybil Grace

Mr. and Mrs. J. F. Barlow were
Pendleton visitors Monday.
Mr. and Mrs. Shannon were din
ner guests at the Strobel home Sun
day. The Ladies Aid Silver tea will
meet Wednesday, October 7, with
Mrs. Lottie Atteberry at the Price
ranch.
Albert Shane and Jess Deos vis
ited at the Wilson home Tuesday.

seed community betterment.
Local and county fairs are tending to become
club fairs, club members exhibting more than 50 per
cent of all exhibts in a number of livestock and coun
ty fairs last year.

spent Saturday at the Wilson home.

spent the week end at the Johnson
home. They have been working
near Wallace, Idaho, for some time
and will now work on the Western
Union Telegraph lines along the
gorge.

Mis. Frank Cramer has been ill
with the flu for the past week.
Mardel Gorham who has been ill
for the past week was taken to the
Hermiston hospital Friday. She
returned home Monday greatly im
proved and hopes to be able to re
turn to school next week.
Dale Albright Jr. of Portland was
in Boardman for a short time Mon
day. Mrs. H. E. Waite visited last week
with her daughter in Centralis-
Pendleton visitors Saturday were
Mr. and Mrs. Guy Barlow and
Chloe, Mrs. Chas. Goodwin, Mrs.
O. H. Warner, Mr. and Mrs. Ray
Brown, Mrs. Brice Dillabough
Katherine Brown, Rhoda Shellen-
berger, and Miriam Campbell.
Mr. Ballenger spent the week end
in Portland.
Mr. and Mrs. Lowell Spagle and
son left Saturday for Molalla where
they will make their home. They
have rented a 75-acre ranch and
will have a large herd of cows
there. Mr. Spagle has shipped all
of his stock to Molalla by truck.
Mr. Spagle has'sub-let the old Har
rison ranch, where they have lived
for the last two years to J. Bryant
who lives on the coast. Mr. Bry
ant plans to move to Boardman
soon. He has a herd of sheep on
Willow creek which he will bring
to Boardman. On Thursday evening
a group of friends gave a surprise
party for Mr. and Mrs. Spagle at
the Packard home. Four tables of
"500" were in play. Lunch was
served late in the evening.
ALPINE.
Mr. and Mrs. Dan Lindsay, An
nie Ree and Alex Lindsay motored
to Pendleton Friday.
Mrs. Marie Clary, Miss Nora Me
Daid and Miss Rosella Doherty
were at the Rural Teachers meet
ing held at Morgan Saturday from
10 a. m. until late in the afternoon
The next meeting is to be at the
Golden West school on November
7. Mrs. Clary was elected president,
Miss Doherty, treasurer, and Miss
McDaid, historian.
Mrs. Frank Kilkenny and daugh
ters, Camilla and Peggy, went to
Hermiston Saturday with Irl Clary
and daughter, Mildred.
Farm Bureau will be held Sat
urday evening, Oct 3. It will be
the first program of the year and
a good one is expected. The grade
school pupils are giving a minstrel

Tuesday morning for Salem With
them were Kenneth Klinger of the

G. L. Bennett was auctioneer at
the Fred Lucas sale Saturday.
Mrs. B. P. Doherty and son Law
rence went to Pendleton Sunday.
Mrs. Doherty will remain there for
some time.
Mrs. Anna Schmidt and Alfred
visited at Mr. Bennett's Thursday
afternoon.
Mrs. John Kilkenny of Heppner
was at Frank Kilkennys Wednes
day. The "skip" party given by the
Pine City high school seemed to
be quite a success. Among those
present from Alpine were Miss Ro
sella Doherty, Miss Margraet How
ard, Miss Rhuey Ann Senter, Alex
Lindsay and Lawrence Doherty.

Saturday on business.
Mrs. Anna Schmdit accompanied
